Was wondering how long this has been a rivalry and what’s the win/loss record against each other? How did this become such a rivalry?
Pulaski Co and Salem Rivalry

Salem leads the rivalry 26-19 all-time. They have played every season since 1977 except for 1988-89
In 1984, Willis White's second season, the Spartans went 9-1 but the loss to Pulaski was enough to keep them out of the playoffs which only had three Group classifications. That's the only time that Pulaski has knocked Salem out of the playoffs except maybe 2002 when Salem was 5-5 and lost to 5-5 Pulaski. The 2003 Salem team missed the playoffs at 8-2 after losing the first River Ridge District championship to Blacksburg. Salem won the season finale against Pulaski having already been eliminated. That Spartan team could very realistically have won the state championship had they made it in.
I'm not aware of Salem knocking Pulaski out of the playoffs, at least not a Cougar team with such a good regular season record.
Hijacking your thread for my own personal memories this afternoon.
That 03 season was tough in old Region III Division 4.
1. Heritage -10-0 defending D4 champ, Sem Champ
2. Blacksburg- 9-1 River Ridge champ (lost to Fleming 34-6)
3. Fleming- 8-2 Blue Ridge champ (lost to Salem 26-7, Franklin Co 32-29)
4. Liberty - 9-1 defending D3 champ, Sem runner up (lost to Heritage 28-27)
5. Salem - 8-2 RR runner up(lost to Byrd 24-20 and Bburg 17-16)
6. Amherst - 8-2 Sem 3rd place (Lost to Liberty 41-6 and Heritage 26-21)
At this time, district champs got the top seeds then next highest power point ratings filled the wild card slots. Salem and Amherst both had legit state title contending teams that year as were all 4 teams that made the playoffs. They both lost two games by a combined 5 and 7 points. That Salem team allowed 76 points in 10 games. Only gave up more than 7 twice all season. Both times they lost, 24-20 to Byrd and 17-16 to Bburg. They actually beat Fleming 26-7 in the regular season that year. I'm sure being left out of the playoffs lit the fire that turned into back to back D4 crowns in 04 and 05. Same can likely be said about Amherst as the playoff rivalry with Salem very much began in 04.
We knocked off Heritage 17-14 in OT while Fleming beat Bburg again 6-0 before Fleming beat us 13-0 for the region championship at Victory Stadium. Fleming went on to lose to Powhatan in the State Final 6-0. That Fleming team allowed 14 points in 4 playoff games. There's no telling who would have come out of that region with the current 8 team set up. Good memories, this year's 4D field looks to be pretty evenly matched and should be a great first few weeks of playoff action. I'm hoping for a Salem-Glass Region Final.
Pulaski won 1992 6a State Championship. Lost one game thar year, to 4a Salem
And in 2000 Salem won the 4A Championship losing 4 games. (3 after Cave Spring had to forfeit their game to Salem) One of the games they lost was to 5A Pulaski 35-21.
That was the year Salem lost to Richlands but we don’t need to rehash that again.

2003 was a very well balanced year in D4. Powhatan was ranked barely ahead of Heritage and Liberty (Bedford) in VHSL Reference. Amherst was ranked #4 despite missing the playoffs. I think that most of the top 15 could've won it or at least made it to the championship game in plausible scenarios.

It was working the other day. Dont know why its showing Broadway. The other day Pulaski Co was not listed.
