Quick Win For Western Branch

Defending 6A champion Western Branch improved to 4-0 with a surprisingly easy 16-2 win over Great Bridge in a mercy shortened 5-inning contest. Starting pitcher Colin Selby struckout four batters while allowing four hits to earn the win. He threw four shutout innings before allowing a 2-run double to Jarvis Donahue in the top of the 5th inning.

Great Bridge starting pitcher walked two batters in the 1st inning then allowed a single to Roth to load the bases. Two infield errors plated three runs and a sacrifice fly by Connor Rhem scored Jeff Butler to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead. Two more Wildcat errors in the second inning led to two more runs for Western Branch.

Butler put the game out of reach with a 3-run double in the 4th inning. He finished with four RBI. The Bruins sent 14 batters to the plate in the 4th inning scoring nine runs. Senior Jordan Mason led the 13-hit barrage with three hits including a triple. Radford recruit Matthew Roth finished with three singles while Virginia Tech commit Grant Maiorana had two singles and scored three runs.

It was the 1st loss on the season for Wildcats who committed eight errors. Donahue and Jimmy Ziemke combined for four of the Wildcats six hits.
