My predictions for seeding and matchups
1. Essex v 8 Rapp
2. Sussex v. 7. Middlesex
3. Northumberland v. 6. W&L
4. West Point v. 5. Colonial Beach

I think the real toss up will be at the 4-6 spots where all those teams could move around and I believe Essex will jump to number one after running thru the NND. And I believe N’land will win out the NND and finish 2nd. CB or W&L will finish 3rd. Just fun predictions. Pretty sure I’ll be way off lol

What scenario do you envision whereby Essex passes Sussex for #1 seed? That would mean Sussex loses to which team?

I am assuming that EaglePride 89 is thinking that Essex will out point Sussex.

He might be right on....

Do not have the schedule in front of me, but Essex is racking up points (strength of schedule, opponents victories etc). Many other folks are really good at figuring out the point system....math is not my thing lol.

@the___kid07 im not sleeping on them but I think they have the athletes to compete and possibly beat CB but after posting that idk if they can make up the point difference to get to that spot. The N’land/W&L game showed that W&L played a mild schedule. That’s why I put them at 6, but could be a 5. Idk, not higher than that seeding though

@SCHSTiger i only put them there because I figured that they would get there winning out the NND. They’re only like .5 or .6 in second. But I’m by no means an expert on the point system, so like I said I could be way off lol

Either way, after watching the CB/Essex game. I’m excited for the Region A playoffs. Those second round matchups should be really good games

I'm curious, why do some post West Point as Westmoreland? I know who that is, just the first few time I seen it it really confused me

West Point is West Point. “Westmoreland” is the county that schools Washington & Lee and Colonial Beach are in. In the NND area, a lot of people refer to Washington & Lee as Westmoreland.

My point is that Sussex is doing the same and still has two, 2A teams on the schedule with winning records.

I dont think Essex can outpoint Sussex unless Sussex loses one of their remaining games, since they have 2 decent 2A teams left to play. I also see WnL losing 2 of their last 3, being Essex and CB.
MY guess would be:
1. Sussex
2. Essex
3. WP
4. CB
5. Msex
6. Numbld
7. WnL
8. Rapp, Franklin or Chinc if they are eligible

From looking at the points and who everyone has left, I think there is really only one seed that is up for grabs to get in. Rapp is probably in the driver's seat for that one but I think they need to win this week vs W &L. I don't think even they get in at 3-7. I don't think CC gets in at 3-7 which they are likely to finish at with wins over Mathews and K&Q forfeit. Franklin needs to win vs Greensville if they want in. That would put them at 3-6 and being in that big school district helps them out a lot points wise. Chincoteague doesn't play a district schedule, if they somehow were eligible I don't think it would be fun for them as they just got beat by Northampton who is probably the last team with a shot to grab the 8 spot sitting with 3 wins right now.
Looks like 4-6 is the magic number for those schools to get in.

Again, I am not good with the points system and just wait for it to be released, but I would think that Essex could outpoint Sussex (but do not know for sure). Essex's win against Thomas Jefferson may be the decider. I think TJ has defeated two 5As in a row who had some wins themselves. Would that be enough plus many of the NND teams have many wins.

Sussex does have two 2A games left but Surry too. Greensville looks good for points.

Any Math folks figured it out?

Also, I am a bit surprised that more Essex and Sussex folks and others in the Eastern VA sports community are not upset about the VHSL changing the playoff criteria for the State Semis 7 weeks into the season. This "late change" basically gives it to Riverheads (see latest VHSL ratings for the details).

Unless someone can enlighten us on how this all went down and who made the decision and why etc.....

IMO, Region A sports just got freaking hosed (again).

Really! Riverheads traveled to region a I know three times and won all 3 and went on to win states.

It doesn't matter what classification a school beats or how many wins that opponent has.

For TJ, all that matters is what classification they are and how many wins they have. They can beat Salem, Dinwiddie, and Oscar Smith or King William, Nelson County, and King and Queen and it doesn't matter for Essex or any of their opponents

uvacavs1, not sure how you figure RH has this home field thing wrapped up. Two more very good teams with a solid chance to compete in 2A to play. Central is being touted as a final four team and Lee has only lost once to a solid Luray team, so there are no gimmes here. We could lose both and not be close on points. And if the Red team wins I would argue their schedule and wins dictate that they should have home field.

Let's not forget a 9-1 Essex team that hosted the semi's against Galax in 2015 while 10-0 RH traveled to GW. Essex had better wins that year for points and deservedly hosted. IMO the right teams generally make it to Salem one way or another. Let it play out and be pissed off later.

This whole concept of designated hosts based on Region is BS anyway. But like I said in a different discussion about this when it was the other way, good teams travel and win, period.

What's up Gunz? Really not trying to argue my man. Has the point system changed in the last few years for Football?

I thought that teams get rider points and/or bonus points for the teams they defeated who have wins against other opponents - the higher the classification plus those with more wins get you a little bit more points.

For example, 1A Essex defeats 3A James Monroe who went 7-3 against mostly 3A and 4A teams. Those wins don't help Essex? I thought they did go into the formula (strength of schedule)..

You do get more for playing up but their SOS doesn't matter.
So beating a 3A is worth 20 instead of 16 for beating a 1A.
Bonus points are 2 for every win an opponent you best has and 1 point for every win an opponent you lose to earns. But it doesn't matter who those wins are against.
I.e.
Win vs 3A that goes 5-5 with wins over 3A-5A schools = 20+10= 30
Win vs 3A that goes 5-5 with wins over all 1A and VA privates =20+10=30

Here is how it works. A team gets a set amount of points for the opponents classification. So using 3a JM, they would get 20 points for them. Then they get bonus points for each of JM wins (7-3) means they would get 14, for a total of 34 points. Those bonus points for each win doesn't matter if they beat Oscar Smith or Nelson County. And on the reverse, if they lose to a 7-3 JM, they get 15 total, 8 for the classification and 7 for each of their wins.

When say Essex has a bye, they pick up bonus points from their opponents winning a game. So with your James Monroe example, if JM wins during Essex bye week, then Essex will pick up 2 points if they defeated JM and 1 point if they lost to IN.

Does that make sense? Wasn't trying to argue, just explain

Thanks HP and Gunz for the explanation. Interesting.

Basically the football formula sort of incorporates SOS (strength of schedule) but sort of does not.

The football formula is not quite as complex as I thought. Thanks again fellas for the well explained description.

Sussex Central controls their own destiny. Essex can only catch them if Brunswick or Greensville County pulls the upset.

Essex should out point them this week, but even with both teams winning out their schedule, Sussex should regain the #1 spot the last week. TheSel is right, Sussex just needs to not let off the gas and secure the #1 spot. Looks like a possible a possible rematch of the opening game could be in the works. Congrats to the NND this year with possibly fielding 4 of their 6 teams in an 8 spot playoff birth. Not sure if Rapp will make it, tough schedule of W&L, Northumberland, and Essex to go. I see them 3-7 for the season.

Essex is playing 1A Lancaster at 1-6. Sussex plays 2A Brunswick at 2-4
