REGION A REWIND

The last Friday night of the regular season is gone and now we look forward to the second season where it all ends with someone being crowned champion. Before we look ahead to the heart pounding action, we will take a look back at some of Friday's games.

ESSEX 47 RAPPAHANNOCK 14

Essex pulled away in the 3rd after Rappahannock cut the lead to 21-14. Rasaun Monroe broke the crowd’s heart with a 51-yard touchdown reception to begin a 26-0 run that left doubt about the strength of 1A East’s top seeded team. Essex will have the week off as they await the winner of Middlesex and Luray.

SUSSEX CENTRAL 52 SURRY CO. 12

Sussex Central cruised to a victory over their rivals who saw their season come to an end. The Tigers overpowered the Cougars throughout the contest with running back An’Tae Motton rushing for 3 touchdowns on the night. The winner of Colonial Beach-William Campbell contest will head to Sussex on November 20th.

FRANKLIN 26 SOUTHAMPTON 6

The Broncos were defensively sound versus their rivals Southampton as they got the victory on Senior night. Franklin rushed for 381 yards on the night. Darrien Duck ran in the longest score of the night from 9 yards for the Broncos. Franklin will face the winner of Lancaster and Central Lunenburg in two weeks.

WASHINGTON & LEE 28 COLONIAL BEACH 22

The Drifters struggled to stop Jarret Sumiel who scored all 4 touchdowns for the Eagles including the game winner. Colonial Beach has improved and this contest validated that. Washington & Lee will host East Rockingham while Colonial Beach will travel to Victoria, VA.

Region A Playoffs Fast Forward

2A East BRACKET

16 Wilson Memorial (4-6)

1 Goochland (7-3)

9 Brunswick (5-5)

8 Greensville Co. (6-4)

13 Central Woodstock (6-4)

4 Buffalo Gap (8-2)

12 Stuarts Draft (6-4)

5 King William (8-2)

14 Strasburg (5-5)

2 R. E. Lee (7-3)

11 East Rockingham (6-4)

6 Washington & Lee (6-4)

10 Amelia Co. (6-4)

7 George Mason (7-3)

15 Arcadia (5-5)

3 Clarke Co. (9-1)

The 2A bracket has some favorable match ups for several 2A teams. Washington & Lee with the strong arm of Cullen Bell should have a great chance to go far. The same can be said for King William who is offensively more potent than the top seed Goochland. Greensville County has the talent to be a nightmare for anyone they face but the most dangerous match up is facing their rival Brunswick two weeks in a row. Arcadia will have the toughest battle facing the always tough at home Clarke County.

Football_14.jpg

Rappahannock will host Altavista and it won't be a laugher but much tougher than folks think.

1A East BRACKET

9 Middlesex (7-3)

8 Luray (6-4) winner faces 1 Essex (9-1)

12 Colonial Beach (3-7)

5 William Campbell (7-3) winner faces 4 Sussex Central (8-2)

11 Lancaster (5-5)

6 Central Lunenburg (7-3) winner faces 3 Franklin (8-2)

10 Altavista (4-6)

7 Rappahannock (7-3) winner faces 2 Riverheads (10-0)

The 1A East bracket may not be as exciting as the 2A one at first glance but the opportunity of upsets are very real. Rappahannock will face an Altavista squad looking for a fresh start after a losing streak has drained them. Colonial Beach will face a quick William Campbell team that will run an offense they should be familiar in stopping. Middlesex will need to be mentally strong away from home to topple the Bulldogs of Luray. Lancaster will have the actual toughest task versus Central Lunenburg who has started to play very well toward the seasons end.

EXTRA POINT

We will look more in depth at the playoffs in Thursday’s Region A Playoff Outlook and a closer look at the team’s of Region A that are looking to be the champion in Salem.
