First off congratulations to those still playing and thank you to those that played and are done until August.

Region A- King & Queen hosting West Point
In the little bit I have been able to watch of both teams, this could be interesting. The QB from K&Q is very good and there is a young group around him that play like a more seasoned group. West Point seems to be young in places as well with maybe a little kore experience on their lines. That’s said I look for a good game with K&Q edging out the Pointers. No rain to deal with this time so maybe we will see both teams on full display.

Region B- Riverheads hosting Central Lunenburg
Really no shock that either are here to play for the region title. Riverheads is coming off of convincing win over Altavista and look to continue the march to state play. Central has been low key dismantling teams with their explosive offense and defense on display last week in their victory over William Campbell. Everyone in the state knows what Riverheads does so no need to beat that dead horse anymore. Central is rather unique, I have seen some spread option, pure spread and double wing. I personally think they are more effective out of the wing but they have a few athletes that can make the spread work too. Of note is #13 as he is about as fast as you will see in pads. I apologize for not knowing his name as listening to the audio from the press box on their Facebook stream is difficult. I see a closer than most expect first half with the Gladiators able to wear down a very good Central team to pull away in the second half.

Region C- Galax hosting Narrows
This could end up being a real war. Galax is as battle tested as any team in 1A and have won those battles. Narrows arguably had a slightly easier schedule but won those games in convincing fashion. You don’t shut out everyone on your schedule and not be legit. That all said I am going to be that guy and say that if Galax comes out flat at all, this Narrows team will thump them. I look for a relatively low scoring game as I think real estate will be at a premium. Turnovers are even more critical than usual and even though I picked Galax in my “pool”, the Green Wave have enough to get by them this year.

Region D- Holston hosting JI Burton
Holston has a QB that is electric and have handled their business all year. JI Burton came out in the rain and laid an egg against a depleted Chilhowie squad to open the season. I like Holston on offense but I am not sold on their defense against better teams. JI Burton has what I believe is enough of both to pull this off and come away with the win.

If I am correct then Riverheads will travel to K&Q while Narrows will travel to JI Burton. This should be an interesting week for sure

Just my opinion but I think Narrows schedule was a little more than slightly easier. Galax didn't play a powerhouse schedule either but some teams on there schedule would have probably rolled through the Narrows schedule. I think GW , Fort , Carroll and Grayson would have done really well with that schedule. With that being said I still think Narrows is a very good football team and Galax with have to play a really good game to get the win.

great updates on the teams left, looks also from what games i have seen on facebook the region a and region b teams besides rhs teams go for 2 all the time, GO BIG RED

Just my opinion but I think Narrows schedule was a little more than slightly easier. Regardless of the schedule I still think they're a very good team.
have not seen many narrows highlights or games, but galax still has there qb which has a great arm and can run anytime, he has some talent

Very good analysis and I admire your dedication to this research. Should be some interesting games and if it is like most things (March Madness for example) there will be a surprise or two along the way.
I appreciate that but you are the gold standard on here when it comes to previews and wrap ups on these games. I figured I would get the ball rolling and let others chime in as they see fit.

Agreed but I am not a fan of the pistol. Puts the back too deep in my opinion. The back is the backup from last year I believe and is not nearly as big as the young man that ran with power the second half of the state title game last year. Not to say that isn’t effective too but rumor is they haven’t been in the weight room nearly as much as when Coach Dixon was there. The last half dozen years that had been a calling card for them, they were stronger than dang near anyone they played and by a wide margin. That said they are still very good and very well may blow Narz out. I just have to believe that Narrows has a little bit of a chip and wants to prove they are a contender too.

I'll go ahead put that rumor to rest because it's not true, the only time they haven't lifted is when they were not allowed because of covid and a lot of them found other places to lift during that time. Not even Dixon could of had them there when the school wouldn't allow it.

I stand corrected. Thank you for dispelling that one. I just heard that from someone down that way in the last week but figured I would troll for answers.

if they ran denver brown more or least on the goal line stop i think the outcome of last years championship game would have went galax way, he was a beast and stud rb.

I think the KQ vs WP game is going to come down to how the game is played. If it's an up and down and all around the field game played in space, advantage KQ. If it's a ball control pound it game leaning on the the line play between the tackles, advantage WP. Lot's of talent on both sides but these teams are stylistic polar opposites. The game plan that each coach comes up with and their ability to adjust will weigh heavily on the outcome.

Thanks for your compliment but I much prefer reporting after the fact. That is why I admired your preview. I might be able to say a few advance words here and there about our local teams, but the rest of you guys are head and shoulders above me when it comes to trying to keep up with the whole state.

As for the forthcoming Lunenburg/RHS game, one might assume from the Chargers' game with WC that the Gladiators should come prepared for a shootout. If that is the case, then maybe we can expect something like what you said....maybe a 21-7 kind of first half, followed by a gradual win by the Big Red in the 42-22 range. But yet it might be a defensive struggle.

I checked my records and this will only be their fourth meeting, all nicely spaced out. In 1983 Riverheads earned a "wild card" spot in the Region B playoffs (that may have been that coin-flip year that I referenced a week or two ago) and they traveled to Lunenburg for a first round playoff game.

The Gladiators were still smarting from a season-ending 34-0 loss to Madison (a team we have NEVER beaten but would love to face again these days!!!) and Lunenburg did not make it any easier by rolling to a 47-6 win. I attended that one and remember it as being one of the coldest games I ever sat through. Lunenburg was a powerhouse then with a legendary coach of their own..........is my old fried brain correct that his name was Chappell or something like that?

Next up was the epic 2000 game played at Riverheads. Believe it or not, I actually missed that one, due to a prior commitment, but it must have been a doozy because fans still talk about it to this day. The game was tied at 7, 14, 21, and 28 before RHS kicked a game-winning field goal at the buzzer. Some folks will mention a hook and lateral play as factoring into that final score but since I was not there, I cannot attest to that. The Gladiators went on to finish 14-0 and win their first state title that year.

Their most recent meeting was 2015. My records seem to indicate that we may not have had the regional format that year. Anyway, we opened the playoffs in impressive fashion, shutting out Altavista 41-0 and Central 42-0 on consecutive Fridays at Riverheads. We then went to George Wythe on a Saturday afternoon in what was a very good game, won that one 31-20, and the next week lost that classic 7-6 state final to Galax.

So technically RHS leads the series 2-1, but if you choose to look at it another way, each team has won a blowout, plus there has been a barnburner. So Friday's game will break that pattern some way or another.

However, one thing that you said that is 100% right is that Riverheads cannot and should not overlook Lunenburg and start discussing where they might prefer or expect to travel next weekend. Fans might make that mistake but I am sure Coach Casto and his staff are fully-focused on Lunenburg and nothing else at the moment.

That is kind of ironic, if I recall correctly one of the few (I'm sure) Riverheads games you missed I attended.

If they would have called it a touchdown when the QB stood up in the end zone it could have been different. But they should have ran the ball more in the first half and could’ve been a very different game.

In my humble opinion. Lol

I have watched at least one game all four C and D teams and a couple of Riverheads.

While Holston quarter back is certainly an athlete I just don't see them from stopping JI Burtons offense. Burton is alot like Riverheads running alot of powers and counters. They come at you down hill and with some big kids as well. Burton wins this one after wearing Holston down.

Galax is a much smaller team across the front than in years past and Narrows is a bigger team in years past. With that being said I watched the line from Galax blow D linemen off the ball consistently all year while giving up as much 75 to 100 pounds.
The RB is the kid that Dixon road like a mule as a freshman in the slugfest from 4 years ago at Narrows.

Narrows schedule was way more than slightly easier than Galax but no one could help whom they played this year and they more than took care of everyone put in front of them. Not allowing but 8 points all year no matter who you played is impressive.

If Galax plays like they are capable and doesnt try to go deep every pass, Galax will be fine in this one. If they come out flat, Narrows will make it a long day.
