RH 34, CB 0 2:48 before half

55-20 final. CB has some nice skill players but penalties killed them early. 5 offsides and 1 false start with the offsides being on an interior lineman. As someone mentioned in another post, they were extremely scrappy and did not quit. Much respect to them. And I am not sure what class #3 is in but that young man can flat fly.

#3 Anajai Lewis is a junior. He has some serious speed and he emerged this year as the team's top threat in my opinion. Will be more of a handful next year and will be the go-to player. Could move to the QB position.

If Colonial Beach had a track team they could compete with anybody with that type of speed.

Congrats to the Drifters for another great year.

Yes sir, there were several players with speed but that young man stood out. Great season by a smaller school and kudos for the heart and effort. I will say that this team was a class team throughout. Sometimes games get lopsided and teams get really chippy but it was a clean game with lots of good hard hitting.

Had to watch my Wahoos dismantle Iowa when I got home, so I am late tuning in. In a nutshell Riverheads took care of this one early, jumping to a 41-0 halftime lead, which they stretched to 48-0 and then 55-7 before the Drifters scored late on the reserves.

The Gladiators first four touchdowns were split between Harrison Schaefer and Brett Hostetler and all came on short runs from within the red zone after steady drives. That made the score 28-0 early in the second quarter, but then the Big Red really got the home crowd jumping with a pair of more electric touchdowns to pad the margin.

First Hostetler fielded a punt at his own 30 and for some reason, CB just did not react. There was no one anywhere near him, and even as he cut to his right and a wall of blockers formed in front of the Riverheads bench, there was little to no pursuit from the Drifters and he took it to the house without even coming close to being touched.

But when RHS got the ball back just moments later, most of the crowd could not believe their eyes as quarterback Chase Armstrong drilled a perfectly-thrown pass right over the middle from 36 yards out that Forrest Shuey hauled in for his first career TD pass. If I am not mistaken, it was only the Gladiators' second TD pass of the season.

Hostetler then scored his fourth TD of the night early in the third quarter and sophomore fullback Moose Lee, who has been a crowd pleaser all season, capped off the RHS scoring in the fourth.

Although CB did not score until well into the second half, their QB showed some major arm strength in the second quarter as he fired one downfield for almost 40 yards to the RHS 27, at a time when the score was only 21-0 and the Drifters might have had realistic hopes of getting back in the game. But they eventually fumbled on that drive. Then in his most impressive heave of the night, he threw the ball a good 50 yards in the air on the last play of the first half and his receiver made a very acrobatic catch, but only made it to the two yard line.

The Drifters would eventually score their three TDs on a quarterback keeper from about 6 yards out, a nice 20 yard pass deep into the left corner of the end zone, and a fumble recovery from one of RHS' many substitute running backs. (By the time this one ended the Big Red had guys carrying the ball that I had not even HEARD of, much less seen in action this year.)

As others have mentioned, it was a clean game and one in which CB did not give up and displayed some serious athletic talent. They just got behind the eight ball early when they couldn't adjust to Riverheads' cadence, as evidenced by the half dozen or so offsides penalties. The fumble after the first long pass and especially the punt return just took the wind out of their sails and kept it from being a more competitive game.

At the end of the evening, Coach Casto was honored for this, his 200th career win, 195 of which have come during his 21-year tenure at Riverheads. As usual, he deflected any praise or attention away from himself and said on his radio interview that the Big Red will now take a look at Galax on Monday and get ready for that one.

The cream has definitely risen to the top in the 1-A playoffs as the top four seeds all survived being upset. That should make the next two weeks very interesting as all four appear to have what it takes to win the crown.
