go to the volleyball game at 4, then while in salem go to the glenvar and Appomattox game at 7

You thinking Gap has something for them? I must have missed it in my analysis of that one. I don’t have it being close this time

Gap did not look good in the drizzle they play us in. If a wet field had anything to do with that performance as was mentioned by someone out side the vapreps world, then it may be worse for them.

Back to the original topic, Patrick Henry or Riverheads will win their first volleyball championship on Friday. Good luck and safe travels lady’s, bring that hardware back to G’ville.

As strange as it may sound, the football team led the way to this semi-final volleyball win tonight. How is that possible you may ask?

Well I can tell you that I have been attending Riverheads sporting events for (ahem) years and I have NEVER seen an atmosphere this loud and intense. Certainly never for a basketball game and I think tonight was even louder than the vast majority of our football games.

The jam-packed student section was led primarily by football players and they got increasingly loud and increasingly creative as the match wore on. Yes the girls on the floor did their part (I will get to them in a minute) but with that much energy in the stands, it simply HAD to have impacted the Lady Gladiators in a positive way and perhaps also impacted Mathews in a negative way. As it stands now, unless there is a schedule change, those football players will not be able to attend the volleyball championship and I do seriously wonder if the girls will be able to create their own intensity enough to bring the title home.

Anyway, for those of you who have not yet seen the scores, the Big Red astonishingly won 25-11, 25-15, 25-15 and I for one was absolutely floored by that level of dominance. In fact if anything I thought Riverheads would be blinded by the pressure and if anything, Mathews would be the cool and calm team that would take care of the upstarts just because they had been there before.

But whatever the reason, the Gladiators took control of this one early and the outcome was almost never in doubt. Now as you guys have learned these past few weeks, I don't speak the language, so I will not be able to dink you to death here this evening, but I think it was simply a case of intimidation, whether or not it was the kids in the stands or the ones at the net.

Time after time, including the very last play of the match, a strong Riverheads serve or volley would simply glance off the Lady Devils and fly out of bounds. So as simple as it may sound, I think RHS was simply more powerful and more aggressive than Mathews was expecting and they were simply never able to match them in overall strength and athleticism. I encourage anyone who does understand the finer points of the sport to offer a more detailed analysis or perhaps post the newspaper's account.

What I CAN tell you is that Riverheads scored the first two points of the night and even that modest lead was enough to set the tone emotionally. They never trailed in the first set. The final two sets were almost eerily similar to one another. Not only did they end with the same score, but we got there in almost exactly the same way.

In each case, Mathews scored first and led for maybe the first half of the match, but never by more than 4 points. But around the midway point, Riverheads caught its second wind, sometimes after a time out, and pushed ahead, scoring as many as 7-8 points in a row in some stretches. For example, I distinctly remember in one of those sets, a 13-11 Mathews lead turning into a game-changing 18-13 deficit.

I have read on here that Friday's opponent will be Patrick Henry-Glade Spring. Talk about your unknown quantity!!! The two teams will have no direct knowledge of one another, certainly no common opponents, and it will simply be a matter of how they stack up against one another and who makes the best in-game adjustments. One team may kill the other in three sets or we could see a five-set barnburner. (Please no, not that!)

But I do know this.......I-81 between Salem and Greenville will be rather busy from about 5:30 to 7:00 if the schedule stays the same and the weather cooperates!

My wet floor reference was targeted at the Mathews coach. Whenever things are going against her team she miracuously finds a wet spot on the floor and play is stopped to discover just what she's pointing out

Knowing the rules and utilizing them to your advantage is not a bad thing. Gotta say that most good coaches know how and when to use those little “tricks”. The really good ones make it seem so seamless that the casual fan doesn’t even know it’s happening.

Hmmm, never even thought about that possibility. Is that connected to all these football players who are seemingly fine one minute and then crumpling to the turf in agony the next?

I just re-read your original post. Does that mean that you were not even there and that you were just testing the waters, ASSUMING that she had pointed out a wet spot at one point or another? If so, then I am surprised that she would do it that routinely.

Like I said, it’s an officials timeout so she wouldn’t get charged with it and it could stop the momentum of the opposing team. Nothing in the rules against it. Like a visit to the mound in baseball, if used correctly this can break a teams momentum. Meaningless and often disconjointed substitutions in basketball between free throws. Timing is as important in sports as location is in real estate. Just my two cents anyway.
