This week I broke from my traditional format of the Richmond Gamers… With just five Richmond Region teams playing this weekend and two of those teams suffering crushing losses, the pool of applicants was just not there like it has been all season. So this week, the final week of the Richmond Gamers, I'm doing something a little different. I will be listing one player for each category and concluding with a list of every player that earned Richmond Gamers honors this season.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Run Gamers

Stephen Mines, LC Bird
No surprises here as Mines had a big first half for the Skyhawks in a dominating win over Hermitage Friday night. Like the week before, Mines saw a lot of time in the first half, limited action in the second. Mines scored two touchdowns in the first half including a 40-yard touchdown run to get the Skyhawks on the board first. His second touchdown was even bigger, a 68-yarder. At the end of the night, Mines had for 157 yards on 16 carries but no bigger runs than the two touchdowns in a 28-7 win over Hermitage.

Passing Gamers

Syour Fludd, Monacan
The scoreboard did not show just how effective Fludd was for the Chiefs but Fludd did it again for the Chiefs. Fludd completed a little over half of his passes, 8 of 15 while throwing for 94 yards. Fludd never did throw a touchdown pass but by passing the ball, he opened up the run game that was effective in the 16-14 win over Heritage. Fludd is just a freshman and the season is not over for the Chiefs but the future is looking bright for he and the Chiefs.

Receiving Gamers

Tyler Wilkins, LC Bird
In a game that was more about the run than the passing game, it's sometimes easy to overlook a receiver but it's hard to ignore Tyler Wilkins. Wilkins has been a target of quarterback Jalen Elliott's all season and Friday night was no different. Wilkins caught four passes for a total of 50 yards including taking one to the endzone shortly before the half. Wilkins is one of those dependable receivers you can count on every game and he like the Skyhawks are not ready for their season to end.

Defensive Gamers

Rayshard Ashby, LC Bird
With a half a dozen tackles on the night, Ashby was a menace for the Panthers offense all night long. In the fourth quarter, with Hermitage trying to rally late, albeit it would have been hard to comeback with so little time left… Ashby, like his teammate Dorsey last week effectively ended the game when he intercepted Hermitage quarterback Rashad Robinson. With so little time left, the Skyhawks then ran one play and was able to take a knee from there. The Panthers might not have been able to comeback but a score was possible but Ashby backed up his strong night with this interception.

Special Teams Gamers

Luke Walls, Monacan
Seems like every week of the playoffs we have a kicker that comes through for his team and this week, that kicker was Luke Walls. In the third quarter with the Chiefs trailing 13-14, Walls was called upon to kick a 19-yard field goal with a little less than four minutes to go in the quarter. Walls came through and the Chiefs defense did the rest in the fourth quarter to make sure that field goal held. Walls field goal proved to be the game winner as the Chiefs move on to the state semifinals for the first time since 1985.

All-Puprose Gamers

Khalik Hamlin, Monacan
No one player in the Richmond Region had as big a game as Hamlin did for the Chiefs. After Monacan fell behind early in the first quarter, Hamlin came through with a 6-yard touchdown run to tie the game, with the PAT of course. Hamlin would go on to rush for 74 yards on the night. Then, with seconds left in the game, Heritage had a chance to score a touchdown and end Monacan's season but Hamlin made a huge play on defense knocking down a DeLoatch pass in the endzone as time expired and preserving the win. Hamlin not only scored the first points of the game for the Chiefs but he also made the biggest play on defense. Hamlin is a big reason why Monacan will be playing this weekend.
