Dinwiddie quarterback Bryce Witt was a little stumped when asked if the Generals’ offense had a nickname.
They don’t call it anything special, he said, which it certainly is.
No. 2 Dinwiddie has speed, athletes and schemes, and the Generals used a fair amount of them while easing past homestanding Matoaca 45-7 on Monday night.
With Witt throwing for 332 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 attempts, Dinwiddie rolled up 502 yards of offense and scored on almost every possession, which seems to be almost standard procedure.
It went into the game averaging 60 points.
“I’ve got a great coaching staff, and I’ve got kids who work really hard,” Generals coach Billy Mills said. “When you put talent with that, it’s just a matter of getting guys the ball. Guys were making great adjustments during the game, finding where we could exploit them. We were just basically taking what they gave us.
“You can’t really zone in on one kid because we’ve got a lot of weapons. It’s just a matter of spreading the wealth.”
The Generals are kind of like any speedy, powerful car you want to name. They’re fast to the line of scrimmage — even on long pass completions or runs, they’re ready to go before an official marks the ball — and fast and extremely productive off it.
They had 325 yards at halftime on 29 plays.
“The coaches tell us keep a fast tempo, move the ball up and down, line up and be the fastest team in America,” said junior wide receiver/linebacker K’Vaughan Pope, who had three catches for 89 yards and an interception.
Witt, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior, completed 8 of 10 passes for 234 yards at halftime. He finished 13 of 17, spreading the ball to seven receivers.
Jakari Batts had three catches for 59 yards and a TD, Tye Freeland had two for 54 yards, and Derrick Jones had two for 48 and a TD. Tailback Zyan Sturdivant had 13 carries for 97 yards and a TD, and one catch for 57 yards.
“He’s always been a hard worker,” Mills said of Witt. “He’s always spent a lot of time in the offseason studying film and studying situations. I’ve put a little bit more on him this year, allowing him to do a few more run-pass checks. A lot of those passes tonight were running plays that he saw and read.”
When you do stop the Generals, you can’t give them extra chances. The Warriors (2-3) forced Dinwiddie to punt late in the first quarter. A roughing-the-punter penalty allowed the Generals to keep possession. They scored five plays and 65 yards later.
“Our goal is just to run as many plays as possible,” Witt said. “Yards after catch and yards after contact, we’ve just got a whole bunch of playmakers.
“The (offensive) line, when we run the ball, always gets a lot of push. I always have a whole bunch of time back there. And they’re always hustling down the field to get some extra blocks. They’re just unselfish. The whole team is unselfish.”
