Riverheads with 2 turnovers but Essex was unable to capitalize.

Fast 1st half. Essex will receive the 3rd quarter kickoff.

Dameron with a 56 yd td run. 2 pt conversion failed

Sounds like Essex has done the best they can. 21-6.

Too predictable this game -

Essex does not have the weapons to make a comeback.

Phillips right up the middle once again from 25 yards out.

I think Essex got like 3 turnovers (weather helps the underdog).

However, Essex could not score off of them.

Even Essex radio said Essex players were out of gas for the whole second half while Riverheads was running around like they had just started.

You cannot out Riverheads Riverheads.

Game still going - Essex trying which is good. Fine season to Essex.

Coach Casto and the Gladiators are headed back to the state championship yet again.

Congrats to Riverheads on beating the Neck and another title soon.

The Neck now turns to Boys Basketball.

At least we know we will take the dog for a walk against ole Riverheads in that sport :).

Congrats to Riverheads on the win and their 4th trip in a row to Salem.

Good season for my Trojans. Keep your heads up. Get ready for next season.

Not guaranteed at all. Riverheads will be strong this year again in b-ball.

My main concern would be who hosts that game if it comes to pass.

Region A or Region B?

(I thought LHS handled Riverheads fine last year, maybe it was closer than I remember).

Riverheads seems to be good at everything - good stuff - rival for the Neck.

The first half was what I thought it would be minus the TO’s. All due respect to Essex but their O was Dameron and he did all he could when he had the ball.

Second half was a different story. It appeared that Essex was gassed and holes that weren’t there before suddenly were open. Good clean game for the most part except one little skirmish. Couldn’t see how it all occurred so I can’t speak to it. Congrats to Essex on a fine season and representing Region A.

The name Jaden Phillips will be prominently featured in the media coverage for this game and deservedly so, as the senior fullback had three great TD runs, all between 25 and 40 yards, in which he was pretty much untouched. However, the Gladiators got plenty of "trench yardage" from Devin Morris and Zac Smiley, and all three of those young men should sleep like babies tonight and be excused from Sunday School if they asked to be.

I felt especially sorry for Morris, who goes about 150 pounds, but time after time he lowered his head and used his low center of gravity to wedge his way right into the middle (and in some cases) UNDER all those 300 + pounders. He scored the remaining TD for the Gladiators and Smiley, although held scoreless for one of the very few times this season, was great as always on those key third and fourth down runs.

The Gladiators mixed up their plays beautifully and just when the defense would get the feeling that it was time to key in on Morris or Smiley, that is when the Big Red threw the misdirection play at them and Phillips was off to the races. If the Gladiators even attempted a pass today, I don't remember it.

As for Essex, they fought hard and had their chances. As mentioned above, RHS handed them two first-quarter fumbles but they failed to capitalize on either one. Then in the second quarter, the Trojans drove into the red zone and had a chance to draw first blood, but the center snap on a field goal attempt sailed over both the holder and kicker, and Riverheads recovered, which then led to Phillips' first TD.

Mr. Dameron certainly came as advertised and as remembered and you could tell he really WANTED this game. His TD run was the best individual effort play of the day. So best of luck to him as he moves on with his career.

If there were keys to this win, other than the factors already mentioned, it would be:

1) The kicking game: Riverheads had it and Essex didn't. RHS was perfect on PATs, always put the kickoffs in just the right spot, and the only two Gladiator punts of the day did exactly what they were intended to do, as one got us out of a hole and the other pinned Essex into one. On the other hand, the Trojans' kicking game was weak for the most part.

2) Penalties: Essex to its credit cut down on the frustration and sportsmanship penalties this time around, but still had far too many motion, encroachment and alignment type penalties.

3) The opening drive of the second half: Like they always say in basketball, the first few minutes of the second half tells the tale. With RHS leading only 7-0 and Essex receiving the second half kickoff, everyone knew that an Essex score to tie the game would fire up the visitors. Instead RHS held them to a three and out, scored the next TD themselves, and from that moment on it was catch-up mode for the visitors.

So win number 12 of the season is in the books for Riverheads and a re-match with Chilhowie awaits. And are you ready for this.....after all the talk about rain this week (which turned out to be a non-factor by the way) some folks are already talking about the S word for next week...........and I DON'T mean Saturday or Salem!

We threw 1 pass that I remember in the flat to #2 in the 1st half.

I gave up my spot on the fence at Riverheads , something I found hard to do ! But do to obligations in SWVA , I went to Saltville and watched the Warriors take care of the Maroon Tide . All I can say is WOW ! The Warriors are for real . The RED TEAM is in trouble . Riverheads won't match up against the speed of this Warrior team . This game will not and I say will not be like last years game . Turnovers may be the only thing to keep the Gladiators in this one ! If things don't go the Red Teams way the run will end ! I will say I met a lot of nice people from both sides and can say SWVA loves their football ! Looking forward to Saturday ! Go Big Red !!!!!!!!!!

XCROSS XCROSS its hard to believe that u went to Saltville to a playoff game and not to Greenville for its first ever semi final game, after talking all week about Essex, u sure your tractor could make it that far, unless u was scared, and yes the RED team will be playoff ready for the rematch, believe that, GO BIG RED

Almost made me sick , not seeing Big Red at home . Had to go down south so just made the best of it . Th SWVA fans don't have a lot of love for the other team ! They had no idea I was a Red Team Fan , so kinda went with whom ever I was around . lol

That's funny. You the man Xcross

That’s about as general a description as you could have made. I am guessing that there may have been 25-30 guys at that game with a VT hat and non descript black jacket.

It would be like telling someone that you were at the RH game and was the guy on the track wearing cowboy boots and a baseball cap.

Lol, you are good and to keep this goin for all these years I applaud you. You sir are the winner of hide and seek.

I talked to a lot of people at the game . Anyone on the end of the field looking at the scoreboard ?I was near the pine tree with the short tent in front . Traffic behind me the hole game . Standing room only if you could fine a place at the fence .

I think Ol' Xcross is using some reverse psychology here. Trying to give us Chilhowie fans a false sense of security. I see right through your tactics....LOL

I'm guessing nobody is fooled into thinking XCross was in Saltville. I'm guessing there is a picture/video somewhere showing a tent around scoreboard.

And I know quite a few Riverheads fans and parents. Some seem to have a pretty confident idea on Waldos identity. Just have to ask the right person

i have been asking for some time now, some people think its this person or that person, and I have asked a few of them and they are not who they think he is, hope they have a picture of the tent around scoreboard, or xcross post a picture of the program or ticket stub he received at the game to prove he was there

I cant say for sure they know who he is, but they seem to be in agreance with others, they certainly seem to at least think they know who he is.
