Welcome to XCross weekly rant session and talk bad about another program or person, and with things he dont believe.

How many personal fouls can a team have and still have a chance to win? Gap didnt have a chance to win, so all you are doing is pointing out they didnt act accordingly, and I would agree with you.

You have got to be the worst fan for a team I have seen. Complain all the time, talk about how bad they are, and talk even worse about the coaches.

I have so many different thoughts about this game that I am not sure where to start. I guess the first thing I should express, which I am sure is shared by many, is total shock that the Gladiators dominated the way they did. Considering that they were coming off the somewhat demoralizing loss to East Rock, it would not have been a huge surprise if they had still been suffering a hangover from that loss.

So this could have been a case of a loss actually being good for them in that it caused them to realize that they have to go out every night and give it 110%. So maybe we have East Rock to thank for this big win.

The next point I would make, and I guess it is because it is so fresh in my mind, is that this was one of the hardest-hitting and most emotional games I have seen between these two in a long time. Usually one or the other shows some finesse to their game and wins that way, but tonight it was just smash mouth from the get-go, with very few really big plays.

I don't think any of Riverheads scoring plays covered more than 10 yards, to the best of my knowledge, and the only pass I recall them completing did go for about a 40 yard touchdown, but it was called back by a penalty. As for Buffalo Gap, the Gladiators shut Rivenburg down COLD. I overheard someone say that he had 10 yards on 9 carries at halftime. Things never really improved for him and I would be surprised if he managed more than 40 yards for the game.

Since some of you have already hinted at it, the officiating certainly took center stage in this game, and I am sure the Bison fans in particular went home questioning quite a few of the calls. But the person I sat beside is one of our regulars on here, and I can tell you that he was spot on tonight! Just about every time a flag was thrown, he correctly made the call up in the stands before it was announced on the field. So that tells me that the officials must have been pretty much on target.

Riverheads scored a pair of first-quarter TDs and pretty much set the tone for the game because they won the early field position battle. On the first two Gap possessions, they could only manage one first down between them, so that gave RHS a pair of short fields to work with. They got the ground game going early as Devin Morris capped off a 46 yard drive, and Blake Smith finished a 60 yard drive, each one scoring from inside the five.

Those two early scores, combined with the success the Big Red was having defensing Rivenburg, frustrated the Bison and that led to the flags REALLY flying in the second quarter. There was one sequence where three flags were thrown on the same play, and for a moment it looked as if they were actually going to step off three different major penalties against the Gap. Instead they were penalized only 30 yards and the third flag was never really explained.

Now don't get the idea that the Gladiators were being perfect gentlemen themselves. Although they were not flagged as much as the Gap, my guess is that the coaching staff was still not happy with the number they did receive. As mentioned before they had a TD wiped out and I can distinctly remember at least two other holding penalties. The Gap also tried some creative signal-calling and formations that caused the Big Red to jump a few times. So the home team's penalty yardage was probably at least up there in the 70-80 yard range.

As for the rest of the scoring, Zac Smiley took over those duties in the second quarter and if I am not mistaken, he scored the final four TDs for Riverheads. The Gladiators also got some strong rushing yards from Jaden Phillips, Cyrus Cox, and Trevor Roberts, in addition to the three backs that scored.

Rivenburg was kept out of the end zone and not knowing the Bison roster, I can't say for sure but I heard the name Karicofe mentioned quite a lot on their fourth-quarter scoring drive, so if he did not score the TD personally, he certainly factored into that possession.

To summarize, those of you who might have doubted RHS after the East Rock debacle should instead realize that what we really learned that night was just how good the Eagles are. So I fully expect them to roll through the district and deep into the post-season. Furthermore, I think the Gladiator coaching staff must have done an excellent job this week of getting the troops to understand exactly what happened at East Rock and to make sure that it did not happen again.

As for the Bison, they can learn similar lessons moving forward, which will help them prepare for the rest of the season. For one thing, you can bet that they will study this game film and figure out how the Gladiators stopped Rivenburg so effectively, considering that he came into tonight's game by my math averaging 250 yards rushing per game and 4 1/2 TDs. The Bison will also no doubt have some discussion in practice about how to play with emotion but also play under control so as to minimize the penalties.

You can rest assured that each of these teams will be heard from at their respective levels come playoff time.

Just skimmed the two local papers' story about the game. One said that Rivenburg had 18 yards on 14 carries and the other one said 20 yards on 12 carries. Not too shabby in either case!

One paper also said this was the Gladiators' 11th straight win over the Bison.

Rivenburg looked flat. I didn't see him fighting for that extra yard or finding the hole at the next level. He didn't look hurt, but he wasn't hitting the holes like he usually does. I wonder if he got into some of Jenkins' fabled brownies?

Excellent work as always.

longtimerhsfan, have you considered compiling all your great game summaries/thoughtful essays into one or more bound volumes - a History of Riverheads Football? Maybe sell them at games etc. and give the money to your school's boosters.

I did not see a hole for him to run in . I don't think he was that hungry , for yards or brownies !

Not trying to be smart or anything, did you really have reservations about this game? I didn't go because I expected a blowout. I didn't think Gap was as good, and after the loss I knew Riverheads would be extra motivated. I am quite surprised you thought otherwise

I did not have serious doubts about us winning the game, but I did expect it to be closer. So the shock I expressed above is related to the margin of victory, not the win itself. I had expected something like 28-14.

As for the suggestion (above) that my writing might be something anyone would actually wanted to read again, I must say I am flattered, so thanks for the compliment. But the truth is that I don't save anything in a file, and as a general rule, as soon as we move on to the next game, I have pretty much forgotten what I wrote!

You do an excellent job.

Maybe it's the difference in a home fan and an unbiased one, even though as I have stated I like Riverheads more than Gap, I expected this or even worse

You do an excellent summary of the games. Are you a reporter or an English teacher perhaps? I am not from your region but I still enjoy reading about your team and area. I have been to one Riverheads game and enjoyed the experience. You all have something special up there.

Thanks for the compliment but no I am not a "professional" by any stretch. I did teach elementary school for a few years wayyyy back in my younger days, but I was terrible at it, as I am sure almost any former student would tell you. I dabble in writing on here and maybe a few other message board/chat line type things, but all just for fun. Nothing that pays the bills!!

Glad you enjoy my reviews but I can tell you......back in MY Riverheads days our teams were sooooo terrible that there would have been no fun in writing about their games. So just like the running back gives credit to his offensive line, I give the coaches, players, and administration at RHS the credit for giving me the raw material to work with, thereby making this "job" a lot easier.
