Sorry to be so late with the details but I DVRed UVa, JMU, and VT games and had to watch them when I got home.
The Big Red scored their first TD in less than a minute this afternoon but the real explosion took place in the second quarter when they put five more on the board to grab that huge halftime lead. The major contributing factor was a serious case of Fumbleitis on the part of the Hornets. They lost five of them in that first half and RHS scored from at least four of them and maybe all five.
In one particular sequence, Wilson fumbled and the Big Red scored in just one play, and then when Wilson received the ensuing kickoff, they fumbled again on their very first play. Most of the mishaps seemed to occur right at the line of scrimmage and most likely reflected some exchange or timing problems as Riverheads was able to pounce on them right away. None of the fumbles seemed to result from a Riverheads strip as near as I could tell.
Cayden Cook-Cash was the big offensive weapon for RHS as he has been many times this season. He swept left end from about 60 yards out for that first TD on the Gladiators' second play from scrimmage, and before all was said and done, he had two more runs of 50 + yards and also caught a TD pass to finish with over 200 all-purpose yards.
After he put the Big Red on the board early, Wilson actually had some success moving the ball as they converted two or three first downs and moved into RHS territory. But the fumble problems soon started and the most damaging one was a shotgun snap that sailed over the QB's head. A whole swarm of Gladiators chased down the ball and Isaac Hartless picked it up for an easy scoop and score to put the visitors ahead 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was a complete nightmare for Wilson as the TO's mounted, allowing Riverheads to score three times in the first five minutes of the period. I can't remember them all in their proper order but Cole Burton scored twice, once on about a 25 yard burst up the middle and once on a sweep left from maybe 15 yards; Luke Bryant scored on a run around the right side in which he was almost able to walk in; and QB Bennett Dunlap tossed a pair of TD passes.....one to a wide open Landon Lightner that covered about 40 yards and a shorter one to CCC that he appeared to grab one-handed. Cooper Robson was converting the PATs after each score.
Triple C scored the final Gladiator TD very early in the third quarter as he got to the corner and streaked down the sideline from about 70 yards out. The Big Red subs then took over and came within a yard of scoring themselves but a fumble at the goal line squelched that drive.
Meanwhile, Wilson avoided the shutout with a pair of long TD runs, scoring once in each of the final two quarters. The two place-kickers combined for a perfect 10 for 10 day, a level of accuracy that may help them down the road in the playoffs.
With the win, Riverheads completes its grueling five-game road swing with its perfect record intact and will now get to finish out the regular season with three straight home games, not to mention remaining at home for the early playoff round(s). Next Friday they will host Fort Defiance.
As for Wilson, give them credit for their stamina as they played three games within a span of eight calendar days, knocking off the Fort last Friday before their mildly surprising loss to Rockbridge in Tuesday's make-up game. They host Stuarts Draft next Friday and if they can cut down on the miscues, they can give the Cougars a game. They then finish out their season with winnable games against Buffalo Gap and Staunton. Despite this week's two losses, they are still alive for the Class 3, Region C playoffs.
