Although the weather more closely resembled a late October game, a nice crowd turned out in Waynesboro to watch the visiting Gladiators scrimmage the Waynesboro varsity. The vast majority of those in attendance, by at least a 5-1 margin, came to see the Big Red and sadly for the home fans, the game itself was even more of a lopsided affair.

They played two 15 minute quarters and called it a night as the Gladiators rolled from the very beginning. The scoreboard was operating in terms of time and the down/distance, but there must have been a mutual decision not to post the score, based on the expectation that the Gladiators were going to pile up some big numbers.

And they did exactly that, producing four touchdowns in each quarter, which in a game situation would have left us with a final of 56-0. The Big Red offense was clicking on all cylinders and the basic pattern for the entire scrimmage was: Waynesboro kicks off or punts to the Gladiators; RHS takes it in for a score, usually in five plays or less; Waynesboro goes three and out on offense and punts; RHS scores again; and so on and so forth.

The domination was so thorough that the Gladiators scored on every possession, whereas Waynesboro did not even manage a first down until their last series of the game, and even then they were up against the third string RHS defense. It was just a classic case of one team having superior depth and experience at every position along with a proven track record, and the other team lacking experience in just about every facet of the game.

At the risk of leaving out anyone, I believe that the RHS starting quarterback, freshman Bennett Dunlap who was still filling in for his injured big brother, tossed touchdown passes to Deacon Moore and Braeson Fulton, back-up QB Cy Cox threw a TD pass of his own to Aiden Hearn, and on the ground both Fulton and Cox had a score, as did Trevor Roberts, Aiden Miller, and Ethan Hartless. My apologies if any of that information is incorrect since I was told they were wearing practice jerseys and there was no program available.

In addition to the TD parade, veteran kicker Peyton Skillman buried the Giants deep on most kickoffs and also nailed all 7 PATs he attempted. A substitute kicker whose name I did not catch successfully connected on his only attempt following the final Big Red score.

The Gladiators now prepare for next Friday's season-opener at home against Washington & Lee (Montross.) It will be Hall of Fame Night and at this point the weather looks great for that one. I believe Waynesboro opens at Wilson but don't quote me.

Thanks for the recap longtimer. Unfortunately for Waynesboro, it looks like it's going to be a very tough season.

It is not uncommon to leave score off the board in scrimmages. There seems to be more emphasis on clock during scrimmages this year due to new rules.

Although if the scoreboard goes out when you guys come up to Skyline, I kicked out the cord, and that would be intentional.
