On a gorgeous night for football, the Gladiator JVs put the Junior Eagles away in the first four minutes of the game. East Rock elected to defer to the second half and the Gladiators took the opening kick-off in for a score in just a couple of minutes.
The touchdown came on a sweep around left end from about 25-30 yards by Devin Morris. He turned out to be the Gladiators' main weapon of the evening as he was able to get to the corner on several key runs in addition to that opening TD.
Just seconds after that opening score, the Gladiators made it 12-0 on a pick six by Jacob King. He picked the ball off around the Eagle 30 and followed his blockers well into the end zone. The Gladiators failed on both two-point PAT attempts.
Riverheads embarked on its third TD drive of the game still in the first quarter and Morris scored his second TD of the game from about 12 yards away on the first play of the second quarter, again on a sweep left. Again the PAT failed.
With Riverheads leading 18-0, ER received the second half kick-off and failed to make any headway as they gave up two fumbles in their own territory. Riverheads scored once more early in the fourth quarter and this time added the conversion to make it 26-0. That was the score when I left with about 3 minutes to go.
The Gladiators had the ball and had driven down close to the Red Zone. However, I would assume that they would have not felt the need to score again and would have taken some knees to run out the clock. I guess it is possible that ER got the ball back and made a big play to get on the board, but my gut feeling is that 26-0 was the final.
East Rock appeared to be a well-coached team and without the three turnovers that I mentioned, this could have been a closer game. I had heard that they were 3-1 coming into the game.
The Varsity teams of course meet in Elkton on Friday night in what should be a most interesting game.
