I was talking to one of the players at the basketball game and he says Riverheads plays all Augusta Co. teams away next season . Looks like alot of gate $ going to all the schools except Riverheads ! What a bone head move on someones part . I bet the football gate pulls 90% of $ for the rest of the sports . If anyone knows what the schedule is please post it !

The gates aren't split?

The home team keeps the gate proceeds unless there is a special arrangement. Since schedules are a two year contract, it all evens out in the end.

The Central District splits the gate. OOD games are "as agreed upon". (I believe our OOD games are contacted to "keep your home gate".)

And like you say, it kind of balances out. But, most of the CD opponents come out better by splitting with Dinwiddie. We have a very consistent home crowd, and travel very well to away games. It's rare that we don't have a crowd at away games that is not equal to, or larger than the home crowd, in the CD.

Home team gets the gate . Large gates come from local rivals, teams from afar don't travel well . This is really noticed at Riverheads ! If you see 20 people on the other side you are lucky . Looks like someone would have at least kept one or two local teams at home . This someone, my guess would be the AD . Bone head move !!!

On that note, I'm looking over at the visiting team. Let's say there are 30 players? And maybe a dozen cheerleaders? And maybe a band? Let's just use 50 as the number of participants. And I look up in the stands, and I see about 25 fans?

Now, I'm no biology major, but I do know it took two people to make one child. I find it hard to believe that so few parents will find a way to attend their kids games.

And you know that a half dozen of the kids probably have several more than one person that traveled to watch them. Grandparents, siblings, neighbors, etc. That means a lot of kids have no one there to support them. Pitiful.

Some games I have counted fans on the other side and 25 was the number sitting and on the fence . Two new teams this year and they will bring no one !

First of all I have never heard of the concept of splitting the gate. I would just naturally assume that the home team gets to keep the gate receipts, including concession stands. But as someone says, it all balances out since games are scheduled in two-year cycles.

Which leads me to my next topic......XCross you KNOW the AD does not make the schedule!!! You are just trying to stir up things. Every time a new two-year cycle comes around, everybody, not just one school, has to have a new schedule. And in the case of this upcoming year, that will be even more involved because of Lee High coming into the Shenandoah.

So the new schedule was made up by the district, not by each individual AD. Goodness knows it would be chaos if each school tried to make up its own schedule. They would all be trying to get 7 home games and three close road games!

I have not seen Riverheads' schedule but I do know that we have to play at Stuarts Draft again and that it is early in the season, not toward the end as it was this year. That part is indeed a shame, but again that was not the choice of either AD but rather the overall input from the district so that the complete schedule could balance out.

If you are correct and we do have to travel to the other two as well, then at least they are short trips. But remember, the next year those schools will all have to come to us. Also if we have to travel like that, then maybe we get East Rock at home again for example.

Trust me, it DOES all balance out and nobody is intentionally getting you all fired up six months before the season even starts! You were just getting antsy.

The way the Central District works it, (and has, as far back as I am aware), is to spit the gate AFTER expenses. Which means the cost for paid staff for security, parking, ticket sellers, game officials, etc. The concessions and anything else similar, are not part of this deal. The home team sends a check for 1/2 of the net proceeds to the visiting team after expenses. It seems to work out ok here in the CD.

Of course, our AD answers to the Principle, but responsibility for the scheduling is part of the AD's duty. Certainly he works with his coaching staffs, but the District contest are really not a negotiable deal. The District leaders work out the district schedules and the AD, again with consultation with his coaches, schedules the non district games.

It would be maddening if you had to re-invent the wheel each year, but there is a history to work from. So it's not like you start from scratch. I'm sure it's tough when you have a new school added to your district.

With only 10 contest to deal with, and a consistent past schedule to start from, football is not the biggest challenge for setting a schedule. But, that is somewhat offset by the fact that it becomes very difficult to schedule makeup games. At least in basketball, baseball/softball, and a couple others you can shoehorn makeup games in during the week. Just "not playing" a football game is taboo. Plus, shared or kept, no school wants to lose a football gate.

I think the A.D. has a large part of how the schedule is set up . Not trying to start anything , just sad we have to play teams away that we just played away last season . No county teams at home means loss of $ for the school . I am glad we will finally have some size and speed for next season . Three more transfers should make up for the kids that are moving on ! To repeat is not easy but I feel the Red Team has a good shot at it .

District schedules are determined by a blind draw typically at an AD or principal meeting. Once that is set then the AD has to get non district games with the goal of balancing 5 home and 5 away each year to keep their income flow consistent.

Not an easy job for the AD at Riverheads to find non district games. Not too many folks want to have to deal with the Big Red double wing. You would think that some of the Valley District teams would want to play them since they will get a ton of power points either way win or lose. TA, Spotswood, Broadway, or even Rockbridge or Allegheny would make a lot of sense.

It helps the smaller school in points but not so much for the bigger ones . That's why Waynesboro dropped us . 3A loss to 1A hurts but 3A loss to 5A , not so much .
Riverheads has been dropped by a lot of schools . P.M. , James River , Bath Co. , Central Woodstock ,and Covington to name a few . Nelson and Clark were games we played due to teams much closer dropping us . Seems some teams want to play RHS but after a couple seasons decide they have had enough .

There's no big picture lost $ at all. Whenever the scheduling rotation changes, this happens somewhat frequently. However, over four years, it's the same as if you alternated all 4.

Teams get more points losing to a 10-0 1A team than they do losing to a 5-5 3A team. But their ego is what hurts the most.

XCross- You are playing Central again this year and next!

Glad to have size and speed finally??? LOL!! I do believe you guys have had quite a bit of that in at least the last 12 years ! :)

We play Bath and Central this cycle as we have had them before . I would like to see Page and Stonewall start winning some games . Blow out games are no fun to watch !
T. A. I here is looking for a coach . Rumor has it Casto was in the hunt . I don't think he would leave but ? Anyone know anything ?

If anyone knows some of the staff at T.A. , they may know something !

This would be a huge development if any truth to it....would he actually be interested in moving, financially RCPS a better situation but not sure how much
Not happening, every couple years there's a new Casto leaving rumor. He'll be at Riverheads, and they will continue to contend for state championships as long as he is there.

Now that Dixon has moved on , maybe he will try to pull Casto to the next level ! He had some real nice comments about him after contest last year . I dont think a lot of people saw the Galax move , so the same thing is possible at RHS .
