It was Homecoming tonight at RHS and EVERYBODY got in this game as the Gladiators had it under control by the end of the first quarter and subbed freely the rest of the way. But Page to their credit kept fighting and arguably had the best scoring play of the night.

Each team scored on its first possession, making the score 7-6 Riverheads at the midway point of the first before the Gladiators blew it wide open by scoring 6 more touchdowns in about a 10-minute span to take a 49-6 lead with 7 minutes still to go in the first half. By that time, Coach Casto was ready to put the cheerleaders in, which meant that the Panthers were up against the second string (and sometimes even third) Gladiator defense. That turned the game into an offensive free-for-all with a ridiculous 63-22 halftime score. Fortunately the running clock in the second half kept it from dragging on time-wise.

Since it would take me all night to recap all the scoring, I will just hit the highlights. Four different Gladiators scored twice each....starters Landon Diehl and Harrison Schaefer, and subs Jeffrey Maddox and Jackson Shover. Shover's runs were especially impressive as he had hardly touched the ball this season but when he got his chance, he showed more speed than just about any back Riverheads has ever put on the field, which should bode well for the future.

Ridge Stokes hauled in his second touchdown pass of the season (and we know how rarely RHS throws the ball) and fullback Colt Miller rounded out the Gladiator touchdown parade. The busiest guy on the field was place-kicker Tristan Robson who hit all ten PATs and also added an unusual first-down field goal early in the third quarter, in a coaching move designed to keep the score from going any higher. At least half the Gladiator scoring plays were of the wide-open variety, which probably means a 500 or more yard effort in total offense.

If you are into statistics, school records, etc. the 73 points is indeed a new single-game record for RHS, topping the 70 they scored at Nelson a couple of years ago. Also I think I can safely say that the 63-point first half is a school record. However, the 103 total points tonight is not only NOT a school record, but it is not even a record for these two teams! They actually only tied themselves, as their 2009 match-up, also played at Riverheads, was a closer 61-42 shootout back in the day when Dakota Wolf was Mr. Everything for Page.

Riverheads' all-time highest-scoring game then came the next year, when the Gladiators won the 2010 state title in that wild 63-49 marathon win over Eastern Montgomery. To my knowledge, that still stands as a state record for highest-scoring state championship game in any division.

As for Page's offensive effort tonight, we heard the name Ethan Hizer quite a bit over the PA system, so he was their main man. However, their play of the night, and I am sorry I don't remember the name or number, came in the second quarter when they scored about a 38 yard touchdown pass in which the receiver stretched his body out about as far as it could go deep in the end zone and still stretched the fingers even further to catch the pass. It was one of those plays they would have shown you a dozen times on TV replays.

Despite all the offense by both teams, I could not blame the coaches if they were less-than-pleased with their teams' focus and poise tonight. It is obvious that both teams could have tackled a lot better, but there were also a ton of loose footballs, far too many encroachments and false starts, and Page was hit three times with chop block penalties.

Gladiator fans will also be checking the social media sites all day tomorrow for an update on the status of senior defensive back Brandon Heizer, who left the game on a stretcher in the third quarter with what appeared to be a leg injury. And speaking of injuries, congratulations to senior running back Ben Agnor, who has been out since the very first game of the season and will not be back. If you can't play in the games, being crowned Homecoming King has to be the next best thing!

The Gladiators now have very little time to savor this one as they must get ready for the trip to Wilson next week, a task that just got a bit more challenging due to the Hornets' surprising 16-14 win at Stuarts Draft tonight. Fishersville will definitely be THE PLACE TO BE next Friday night!

Tylor Williams #22 caught the pass in the end zone. The Hizer kid played well I thought and was somewhat successful. I also liked their SO QB Wiliam Hart. The kid has a decent arm and given some time can sling it. Twenty eight players on the roster but roughly the same 13 playing big minutes make it tough.

I just want to give my two cents on the Gladiators. I agree to a point about Shover for RHS. He was surely faster than anyone on the field at that point last night but in a foot race, I would still take Diehl. I did like the mix of young players that came in and played extensively from roughly 7 minutes to go in the first half the rest of the game. Good game experience and defensively they were competing well. I did see room for improvement in the younger DB play but that takes the practice and game experience they receive on nights like last night. I think we will have to execute much better than the last two weeks to have the outcome we want next week. Very loose and sloppy with the ball even in dry conditions, and possessions are way too critical for that. I love the few little wrinkles that we get to see from time to time as i believe there will be a time we need them. That all said, the Hive will be the spot to be in the area on Friday and I can't wait.

Page County is 1-5 (now 1-6)? What is the big deal? That program needs to be built up. I see no reason to post this thread unless it is for boastful reasons? If that is the case anyone can beat up on sub-par teams when you are a powerhouse like Riverheads

longtime does a weekly wrap up on RHS pretty much every week. No need for everyone's approval to do so.

Im a new member to the board so I am getting the hang of it. Thanks for making me understand the ways of the board. I have said before the season that Riverheads gonna win states now that Altavista has trickled in talent. They held their own in 2A. Appomattox goes to the preseason Jamboree yearly. I enjoy it up there.

Longtimer does his recap every week. You can tell he enjoys it and puts a lot of effort into it. Even though I would prefer they were from a losing perspective, I still like his details of the game. I have seen many of those kids play since they were 8, so I like to see who is doing what for them. They hang a lot of points on a lot of people, so his recaps are not boastful at all. He enjoys doing them and I like many others actually like reading them.

That brings me to why I wanted to post. When was the last time the red team was shut out in game? My guess is a long time, maybe never in the current coaches tenure?

Lost to Bath County in 2002 21-0 was the last time RHS was shut out.

Thanks for the back-up guys. You are correct that I do this every week and enjoy it. I also try to give credit where credit is due, as I did this time with Williams' circus catch for the Page TD.

rhsgrad....Riverheads last shut out was November 5, 2004, a 28-0 lost to Central of Woodstock. So that is 133 games and counting.

When was the last time Wilson was shut out ?
Don't have to look back to far: 3 weeks ago (9/25/15) vs Buffalo Gap. That was the second shutout of the Hornets this season as Waynesbro served them a goose egg in the season opener.

In Fact: Wilson has been shutout 7 times since 2004, one of which happened to that "Best group of little league football players ever" in 2012

2012? Oh you mean the year Wilson beat the team from Greenville not once, but twice? :)

Trevor:

The overall series does not work in your favor and also, there was an odd circumstance back in the 80s when you were just a gleam in your Daddy's eyes in which they played twice in the regular season for two years in a row. I will spare you the details of which team won all four of those games.......

2012? Oh you mean the year Wilson beat the team from Greenville not once, but twice? :)

Yep, that 2012, not the B.C. one. That year is just like all 2014 years since the Birth Of Christ that Wilson Memorial has failed to win a VHSL Football State Championship. I'm also afraid we are all living in the 2015th of those types of years.

Now we don't have to go back to the days of when Jesus walked this earth to begin counting years in which Riverheads has not won a State Championship. We must only go back to the days when Miley Cyrus was a nice young lady, Tiger Woods was at the top of the golf universe, and Lebron James was a Cleveland Caviler... wait.. the first time. I am not sure we are living in such a year now though.

I was only referring to the year in which Mr. Wakefield pointed out.

I am well aware of our history against you guys and how we have came out with an L more often than a W.

History also says when you guys are undefeated through the regular season you just can never live up to the hype and win it all. Boy I would love to be that team who gives you your only loss so you can just make it all the way. Wouldn't be the first time.

Just know that we will forever be the thorn in the side of the "red pride"

Success breeds dislike, you guys should know first hand. I think it's no secret why the fans from Greenville have such a distaste for Wilson Memorial, the only team who year in and year out gives you a battle, and the only team who has had more than a one year run of success outside of your own. We have a long long way to go to claim the level of your schools football history, but we are on a good start.

I know this. Which is amazing considering the tragedy that happened year involving a player and his family.

I have said it before and I think Tim alluded to it, but we are not as complete team this year as we were in the title run years. That said we do compete and should make a decent run. Also there is time for those little improvements that make a difference down the stretch.

Now to the "thorn in our side" comment. True the games have not been blow outs but I promise Wilson is not the Red Teams "Super Bowl". The outcome of this game is for local bragging rights more often than not. I am not belittling the run Wilson has been on because they have definitely played great ball the last several years. Should be a good game on Friday. Interested to see how the local media spins this since there is a slant to the coverage the last several years IMO.

I'm rather interested in that as well.

At least this week I don't have to worry about the announcer saying "DraftZilla on this float is crushing Fishersville just like our cougars are going to crush the hornets" lol

They may not be as complete a team as usual but they are still disciplined and don't make a lot of errors. It will take our best effort

Just to clarify, 2001 was when Jeff, his Mom, and his Grandmother died. I'd step lightly when referencing that tragedy.

2000 was the 14-0 season when RHS didn't live up to the hype and they handed out rings for it....I mean come on. Three rings and the "Red team doesn't live up"??? If it was one, maybe you'd have said something that has a chance of making sense. How many 10-0 seasons does Wilson have on the books? At least HR6 knows winning when he talks his trash, even though he crazy.

Also, how did you shut down Draft's Izzy Johnson last week? Ya'll must have had him on lock down.

Knew the family very well...which is why I said it's amazing that team could focus after what happened...I was wrong though because I swore that happened during there championship year. Don't dare think I would make a joke out of that.

The living up to the hype I referenced is all of Riverheads undefeated seasons that meant nothing. It's not like what I'm saying is wrong. Casto said it last year himself..

We had the entire Draft offense on lockdown outside of one drive in the 3rd quarter

Izzy didn't play

Crazy right?

Like losing your starting center (being forced to start a freshmen), starting CB to a car crash, your LB playing with his knee messed up, your player of the year RB barely able to play cause of his ankle, or a starting safety to migraines.

I guess it was okay for them to have that excuse but you never heard any of us make a peep about playing in Salem with the above circumstances. Why? Because all that matters in the end is the W or the L. History doesn't show who played or didn't play. (For Gunz credit he made zero excuses. Other posters are doing that.)

Knowing the whole story helps with future predictions. You mentioned some of the reasons I chose Glenvar in the pick'em finale last year.
Not an excuse, just an explanation. There is a difference.
