Riverheads Soccer Downs Northampton 5-2

The Gladiators captured the 1-A Regional title today with a hard-fought win that was closer than that score might sound. However, the bad news for you readers is that I don't know the sport and this was my first game of the season, so all I can do is give you the basics.

RHS jumped ahead 2-0 by the midway point of the first half. Northampton then closed to within 2-1 before RHS scored again to take a 3-1 halftime lead.

Northampton then scored very early in the second half to trim the lead to 3-2 and for most of the rest of the game, that is where it stayed. From the little bit I understood and the comments I was overhearing, Northampton was the main aggressor in the second half but they could never get the tying goal. Riverheads finally got an insurance goal with about 12 minutes left and added another one with less than three minutes to go.

I have read someplace that RHS will play Honaker next. Northampton also advances to Radford and I assume Galax is the other west team????

Thanks for the report. Yes, I thought that Northampton would perform better than Mathews. Northampton, for new soccer fans, has long been a Group A soccer powerhouse and have an outstanding, long time coach in John Gorman. They have been in states many times. Sounds like they gave it their all in a good one.

Yes, Galax won easily over newcomer to states Honaker 6-0. So Riverheads will play them in the state semis. Congrats to Honaker for making it, you got an uphill battle v Riverheads. I will not post my prediction on this one, I'm sure that the Riverheads coach will keep it classy. Good luck to both.

As for Galax v Northampton, I will pull for the old Region A foe Northampton. I say that that match is a toss up. Either could take it. Both teams are soccer powerhouses. Northampton has an extremely long trip to Radford but they are used to that. Heck it takes almost 4 hours to get there from the Northern Neck and we are straight across from the Bay!

If Galax wins, you guys get the same state championship rematch in the same season as football! That would be cool.

Now, back to the Stanley Cup. Go Pens! My wife's people are from the Pittsburgh area so it makes it more fun to watch. One of my Brothers in Law went to Game 1 in Pittsburgh the other night and sent me a cool pic from the game. Then Brazil plays in the big Copa America Cup soccer tournament. Lots of sports going on!
