You gotta have something to do while waiting for football season, so I hit the season-opener down in Greenville tonight where the Lady Gladiators were taking on Bath County. Nice crowd on hand from both schools and I hope the nasty thunderstorms in the area did not affect anyone either coming or going.

Before I deliver my brief review, you should know that I do not understand some of the finer points of volleyball and in fact have probably not attended more than a dozen matches in my life. So don't expect me to use words here tonight like "dink" and "kill" because I don't know what they mean.

Truth is I am still trying to figure out how you can hit a three-pointer if the basket is 40 feet up in the air and tilted at that weird angle. I asked one of our boys basketball players and he didn't know either.

Anyway, the Lady Gladiators won in three straight sets by the consistent scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-16, which pretty much tells me these two teams could play 100 more times and the Big Red would probably win 98 of them.

So if you wanted excitement and closer competition, the JV match was actually the better of the two. It only went two sets and in each of them, the Lady Chargers jumped out to the early lead, and RHS fought back to challenge. But Bath held its composure and took both sets 29-27 and 25-21. The first one was obviously the better from that score and each team had their chances to earn the winning point.

See I told you I didn't know much! RHS travels to Parry McCluer on Thursday to take on the Lady Blues and on the same evening, Riverheads will be hosting Page County in an early JV football game. It is my understanding that this game was originally on the schedule for the end of the season, like their varsity counterparts, but they made a joint decision to move it to the beginning of the season. Works for me......guaranteed warmer weather!
