Many fans around the state will see this score and assume it was business as usual and that Riverheads "rolled all over" WP. But from my perspective here at home (and thanks again Mrs. C and the WTON guys for a terrific telecast) the Pointers made a statement of their own in this game and proved to anyone watching that they were not going to back down. As a result, they kept Riverheads from looking as crisp as usual, especially in the early going.
As KWHS recapped for you, the Pointers were especially aggressive in the first quarter, as they forced not one but two RHS fumbles, although Riverheads recovered one of them and the second one looked as if it could have been a blown dead play. Those defensive stops probably left a few Gladiator fans in the stands wondering if they had perhaps underestimated the home team as the first quarter ended with only a 3-0 lead.
The Gladiators then got the offense going and over the middle two quarters they put all seven of their touchdowns in the books at the scoreboard end of the field. Kicker Cooper Robson was perfect, adding all the PATs to personally account for 10 points on the day.
If there was a key to that Big Red offense it was the depth at running back and the coaching decisions to take the focus off Zac Smiley once it became obvious that the Pointer defense had come prepared to make sure he did not dominate the game. As a result of that strategic move, Cayden Cook-Cash, only a freshman, had the two longest runs of the day, 37 and 50 yards, showing a glimpse of his future greatness.
As always, Cole Burton, Noah Smiley, and Cy Cox had some quality runs; Aiden Miller (a talented running back in his own right) scored on the blocked punt; and ace receiver Landon Lightner came within inches not once but twice of scoring by way of the pass. Speaking of the pass, senior tight end Trevor Roberts, who has been used primarily for his blocking this year, also had a nice reception.
Once the subs got into the act, David Austin, Shay Archie and Luke Bryant gave us a peek into the future, with Bryant scoring the final RHS touchdown. So yes it was a total team effort for RHS and any Galax scout who may have been in attendance probably left the field shaking his head and saying "How are we supposed to stop that many different weapons?"
The Gladiator defense kept WP's rushing attack in check, as the Pointers got very few yards on the ground, but their passing attack got them on the board in the second quarter, as a 40 yarder got them down into the red zone. Then just when it looked as if Riverheads would keep them off the board, Khalil Norris found freshman Jack Lewis for the TD on a 4th and goal play from the 13. Uzell then squeezed across the goal line on the PAT.
Congrats to the Big Red and let's get the job done next week in the first-ever state final to be played in Greenville. But, considering the difference in depth, numbers, and experience, I for one feel as if the Pointers gave a fine effort as well today, and we just may see them again in future years.
