Riverheads defeated Rappahannock County 3-1 to win the Region B Volleyball title.

So Rappahannock County will play the Rappahannock Raiders in Warsaw this Saturday at 1:00 pm -

State Quarterfinals.

Middlesex will travel to play Riverheads. Time?

State Quarterfinals.

Riverheads' win tonight was all about a series of momentum shifts. Each time you thought one team was ready to assert itself and take complete control of the match, the other would step up and make its own statement. But the Big Red came through in the final two sets to win the match 25-18, 18-25, 25-12, and 25-17. As reported above, they will now host Middlesex Saturday but a time has not been announced. The Lady Chargers made a visit here last year in the playoffs and if I remember correctly, they brought a sizable and very vocal crowd with them, so it should make for a great atmosphere.

Tonight's first game was nip and tuck with several lead changes in the early going but Riverheads gradually pulled away to the 7 point win. They then appeared to be well on their way to a second win, leading 13-8 at one point. But RCHS stepped up its intensity and turned that one completely around to even the match. The Panthers did not bring that many fans but the ones on hand roared their approval as they clinched the set. At that point, it appeared as if the momentum had shifted and that RHS might have its hands full the rest of the way.

Instead the Gladiators kept their poise and were not rattled by Rapp's surge as they pulled away to an easy win in the third set. The fourth set was pretty competitive until about the halfway point and the lead was only 17-15 when the Gladiators kicked it into high gear and put it away.

As you guys know from my previous comments I am not that sharp on the rules so I can't tell you who had how many kills, how many dinks, etc. but there were definitely some serious battles at the net. And of course since it was high school ball, we had to have at least a little controversy. So in the middle two sets especially, the man on the ladder upset the Riverheads apple cart about three or four different times by over-ruling or reversing decisions so that a point was taken away and given to the Panthers. Fortunately the match was not close enough for any of those occasions to impact the results.

So congratulations to Riverheads and best of luck to both teams as they battle their Region A counterparts on Saturday. If I understand the format correctly, if both were to win, they might meet again next week in the state semis, but let's take things one match at a time.

The VHSL website now shows Saturday's quarter-final as having a 1:00 first serve. I guess we can assume that is correct. If so I am sure the idea is to allow Middlesex folks to get back home at a reasonable hour. For probably the same reasons, the RCHS/RHS match-up is also set for 1:00.

There's a play scheduled for Rappahannock High that night and that's why that one has a 1 pm start.

I love it when people boast like that when they could not possibly know how the regions compare to one another. Hypothetically any one of the four remaining teams in A/B could be better than either of those you mentioned.

However, having said that, there was no comparison last year in the strength of PH as compared to Riverheads once they got to the finals, so I suspect that is where you are coming from. But that does not necessarily mean that either one is the same team it was last year. Could be better, could be worse.

So let's just see how Saturday and Tuesday go and then we will at least know who the final two will be. As for Auburn, good grief, didn't they win enough state titles last spring? Surely some of those girls graduated.
