The Staunton News Leader obviously feels that neither Lee/Waynesboro (Thurs. night) nor Lee/Spotswood (Friday night) was important enough to put in its papers.

There hasn't been a Lee girls' game article all season!

That's really unbelievable!

Are you able to access the News Leader online?

There are articles about the games there.

I posted the Lee-Waynesboro article in the Lee/Waynesboro thread from Thursday night.

I'll post the Lee-Spotswood game below for you.

LEXINGTON - It wasn't a good two days for Robert E. Lee basketball.

It began Thursday night with a one-point loss to Waynesboro in a nondistrict game at the Paul Hatcher Gym.

Then the losing carried over to Friday night.

Playing in the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout, a tournament at Rockbridge County High School created to raise money for cancer awareness and research, Lee High tipped it with Spotswood in the final of three games on the opening night of the event.

With Lee moving into the Shenandoah District after last season, it was a reunion of sorts with Spotswood from the Valley District. The two have been rivals for a long time, but as Lee coach Terrell Mickens said this week, it hasn't been much of a rivalry lately because Spotswood had won 12-straight meetings between the two.

After Friday night, it's 13 in row for the Trailblazers, an unlucky number to be certain for the Leemen who fell 66-59.

Lee led 14-8 late in the first quarter after Jalen Henderson hit a 3-pointer, one of his 3 on the night and part of the 10 points he scored.

But Spotswood rattled off the next 13 points to lead 21-14 early in the second quarter. Lee never regained the lead, although they got it to one on a Jahleel Pettiford layup off an assist by Jarvis Vaughan.

"It's kind of shaky," Pettiford, who had 12 points in the loss, said of the mood in the Lee locker room after the game. "But we'll get back. Last year we lost to this team and then after that is when we made our run."

A run that ended with Lee High as the Class 2 state champions. Lee fans are hoping that same magic happens again following yet another loss to Spotswood.

In addition to that similarity, there is another one. Last year, Lee lost to Martinsville in the Rock the Ribbon, its second loss in a row. Lee entered the Lexington event off a loss to Harrisonburg.

Lee struggled with foul trouble all night against Spotswood Friday. At one point in the third quarter, Vaughan, Henderson and point guard Jayden Williams were all on the bench as the fouls piled up.

After falling behind by nine in the fourth quarter, Lee managed to cut the Spotswood lead to three points on three different occasions. On the final time, Vaughan missed a free throw that would have completed a 3-point play and got Lee to within two.

Elijah Mushagasha came back to score for Spotswood, pretty much putting the game out of reach for Lee.

"I thought Spotswood made some tough shots," Mickens said. "Every time we cut it close, (Kaleb Strawderman) hit a big-time shot. He's a shooter and we didn't find him in the transition. I'll take the blame for that one."

Strawderman finished with 13 points, but most of his damage was done early, with 10 first-quarter points.

Vaughan finished with 22 points to lead Lee.

Lee is at Riverheads on Tuesday and at Stonewall Jackson Wednesday.

Pettiford said the team just got in the gym and worked hard last year following those back-to-back losses. He thinks the team will do the same thing this time.

"Practice makes perfect," he said. "We just need to go in there and do what we do, work hard. Go hard and we'll get back to the level that we was last year."

The News Leader shut down its presses, & has its papers printed in Harrisonburg. Well, Harrisonburg has to print its own newspaper, so the NL has a 5:00 pm deadline for stories written by its reporters. If you drive by the building it once owned (it recently sold it, & is renting a small portion now) at 11:00 pm, you'll see the papers delivered from the Harrisonburg presses, waiting for pick up & delivery.

Be careful if you sign up for the NL's online services - read the privacy policy. It's brutal.

I've been told the NL plans on being 100% online in 3 to 5 years. I guess not printing the game stories, not even printing the standings, is preparing those who stubbornly continue to buy the printed version.

Since there were Saturday afternoon games today, the NL will probably grace its customers with a couple of stories tomorrow morning.

If you want high school sports coverage in a printed newspaper, the Waynesboro News Virginian is the only option.

Curious - what do you mean by privacy policy being 'brutal'?
