I know that I'm making mountains out of mole hills...and I know its all about population and geography...the closer you are to Roanoke and the more folks you got in your area the more coverage you are going to get...but dang...every week I walk over 100 yrds to get my paper to read about my team...a team that has great fan support and currently is 26-0 going back to last year...a hell of a record and accomplishment....AND every week I open up the paper and look....this week 3 teams that Giles defeated this year all got color pictures and half page articles...Giles got 3 paragraphs....I know to some I'm making a big deal over nothing but come on...Now this week its getting nitty gritty...could definitely lose this week...then I guess they would give us a half page like Glenvar and C-burg...Just feel like the Rodney Dangerfield of high schools around here...no respect,,,definitely not as much as it should be....keep winning boys...they wont have a choice....GO GILES

You guys bring more fans to a game than any area school except Salem. You don't need the Roanoke Times print for validation on this end of the state. How many boulders in Giles Stadium have State Champion on them? Maybe the problem with pictures is just needing a local photographer to email pics into the Times.I am sure with their limited manpower they are stretched thin for photographers.

The Times usually only has reporters cover about 4 games each week with a full article with pictures and a complete detailed game stat report. I, as a lot of other Giles supporters would like to see more Times coverage of the Spartans. But if some Roanoke area schools are having successful seasons, they most likely will get the local coverage. It is what it is. Heck, most of us are there every Friday night anyway. We don't need to read what happened, we lived it.

Personally I think you are wasting your money, time and energy walking 100 yards to get the Roanoke Times any way : )

We don't need any respect from any media outlet! Our boys have earned the respect of our fans by their conduct on and off the field and that is all that matters! As long as they keep playing hard and executing, then they will be hard to beat!

I hear yall....and I know its stupid to care about something so silly...thing is these boys deserve a little more face time...they get all kinds of respect and pats on the back from Giles fans...but the other areas around buy that paper and there is their boys pictures or names for everyone to see...don't the defending state champs from this area deserve a little more coverage...If we keep winning it will take care of itself....I guess next year at this time when Im in Greensboro it wont matter as much,,,still plan on coming to the games....hope my boys win out for me...........GO GILES

Giles has the respect of many programs, with Riverheads as one of them. You guys have great players and fans. We enjoyed our trip last season during the playoffs. Sorry to hear about the Martinsville game, but a few players don't represent the whole team and their fans. I'm sure they are the latest team to gain respect for your program after the blowout loss they experienced last Friday. Good luck the rest of the way!

I noticed the lack of coverage on the Giles -Martinsville game. Why they ignored Giles to focus on lesser teams befuddles me.

ghs89er I feel your pain....always been the case at Riverheads...haha. Oh well, our boys go out there and play the game they love! We rarely open up a News Leader or News Virginian anymore! We are proud of our team and program, don't need an useless paper to make us feel that way, they prove themselves on the field every week!

"Always been the case at Riverheads..."
Baloney. Leader paper full of Red Pride stuff this fall.

Yeah, I think you're overreacting just a little. The RT probably doesn't have a large enough photography staff to cover every game in the Timesland. If I had to choose which games to cover, I wouldn't have sent anytone to Pearisburg either. I wouldn't have expected the Giles-Martinsville game to be close, and it wasn't. The game against Lee will be a different story, and I expect there will be a better story in Sunday's paper. We shall see. At least we always get a lot of love from WSLS. It helps that one of their reporters is from Giles.

Worry about next game dude. Not glory! People at other places respect Giles. Just ask me. I will riding into the land of Sparta like Ric Flair. So if you hear a big WOOOOOOOOOOOOO......Spring Road is upon Angel's Rest!

Full of Red Pride stuff?? You cover all area schools and I can promise you, with lots of complaints from others as well, we get the least amount of coverage. October 3, game of the week with East Rock and Riverheads homecoming, SMALL article "Red Pride enjoy 'special' night. The two games this year where there was coverage, Waynesboro and WILSON, wonder why? But, hey that's ok, we are use to it. We have to be last man standing, then you show up, see it every year!

Back in 2004, I confronted RT in reference to not covering Gretna at all. They said Gretna was not in Timesland. I did some research and found that Gretna was closer to Roanoke than many of the schools in Timesland. I even tried to get RT delivered to Gretna. They tried to get me to believe that they would have to move the printing plant to Gretna to get RT delivered.

Despite their shortcomings, the RT is the best sports page in the state.

I think there are a number of teams that are considered by roanoke times to be NOT in "timesland" that are closer to roanoke than the schools they cover. same thing can be said about wdbj7. channel 7 will drive right by one game to cover another game because the closer game is not in their viewing area. go figure.

With Gretna's deal, we were 28-0 with 2 state titles, when I talked with a RT reporter. If we had been "just another team" no coverage would have been expected. In that 28-0, some were wins against their beloved Timesland teams.

I know around a decade ago, I had to go to Floyd to retrieve something I lost the day after I went to the Giles-Floyd game. I bought a RT in Floyd and it had a big write up on the game. When I went back to Giles, I noticed my parents had a RT they bought in Giles, and it didn't have the same write-up.

It's pretty simple....

I'm not sure what all the crying is for....

You have city newspapers with bigger schools/population/alumni and then you have fringe county schools are generally are a lot smaller.

To expect the same coverage makes no business sense.

You play to your audience....

Same reason you don't hear a lot of NHL talk on talk radio.... not as many people care.

Re: It's pretty simple....

Anyone who talks about the NHL has nothing else to talk about. Same goes for NBA.

red raid you're full of it

The news leader has been clinging all over RHS year after year.

Trevor you know that's not true. Every reporter from the NL was all over Wilson until they lost. Not saying they didn't deserve a good bit of respect but anybody that doesn't see how much they leaned their coverage is delusional. One reporter AFTER the game pointed out some short comings on the coaching and damn near got barred, lol. It's funny hearing a complaint about media coverage in the SAW since it's so small anyway.

Now when it comes to Giles or Gretna or any successful program, it appears that some want to report the next big thing not always the current one. It's like they are trying to stay just ahead of the curve and create controversy at the same time.

With that said there are a lot of reporters that bust their butt to bring solid coverage to the area teams that they cover. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for all they do.
