FOOTBALL FALLOUT: Games Off Friday Due To COVID-19​


As originally reported by Southside News Today, Friday's football game between George Washington-Danville and Dinwiddie has been canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests within the GW-Danville program, causing their program to be put on pause.
There are no plans to reschedule this game at this time. Dinwiddie will now begin their season on September 3rd when they host Heritage High School of Lynchburg.
Meanwhile, in Richmond, the John Marshall Justices continue a quarantine that forced them to miss their final scrimmage, and will not make the trip to I.C. Norcom for their scheduled opener this Friday night. The game is officially listed as postponed at this time. The Justices will now prepare, once quarantine is lifted, for a trip to Armstrong to open their season on Saturday September 11th.
Meadowbrook announced Tuesday night that, due to "uncontrollable circumstances", their game at Hermitage Friday has been postponed to Friday October 8th. There was no official cause given for the postponement.
The Washington and Lee at West Point game scheduled for Friday has been canceled, but no reason was given as to why.

So, #1 loses to a nationally ranked team from North Carolina, #2 is idle awaiting their shot at #1, while #3 wins convincingly, all the while #4 and #6 have their showdown postponed due to COVID-19.

SUPER 12 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL POLL---WEEK 5​


This has been a strange season when it comes to polling for high school football. This is the first time in the history of our poll that a two-loss team is at the top. The explanations, and roads ahead for the ranked teams, are below as we expand our "Super 12 Poll" coverage to what has happened, why they're ranked, and where they're headed. NOTE: All games listed begin at 7pm Friday unless otherwise noted...


1) HIGHLAND SPRINGS (2-2, was #1, l. to Martinsburg (WV) 26-25, at Henrico)---It's very hard to bring the Springers down with the heir apparent behind them one of their two victories, and especially after losing to a perennial West Virginia state champion by just a point as a Hail Mary with no time remaining failed. The Springers likely will get their mojo in high gear again when they travel to face a Henrico team struggling mightily right now.

2) MANCHESTER (2-1, was #2, d. Powhatan 38-6, vs James River)---The Lancers took care of Powhatan rather handily, thanks in part to fumbles by the Indians. Their spring game was much closer. Now they face a Dominion District and Class 6, Region A rival (again) in James River, who is 3-1, but who got throttled by unbeaten Douglas Freeman in their biggest test so far.

3) VARINA (2-0, was #4, d. #9 Hermitage 28-21, at Mechanicsville)---Defeated another ranked team helps the Blue Devils move up one spot in the poll. What a gutsy onside kick call in the second half on the road to aid in their win against the Panthers. They will be favored going to Mechanicsville Friday, but October begins with two games in five days, hosting Hanover and going to #6 Hopewell to make good their August game.

4) THOMAS DALE (2-0, was #3, DNP, vs #8 Matoaca)---As of Monday night, all systems are go for the return of the Knights to action after a long COVID-19 pause cost them two games. They won't make good the Hermitage game, the Meadowbrook game is in serious jeopardy. Thus, wins are crucial for a team that may only play eight in the regular season versus ten for counterparts in Class 6, Region A. We'll talk Matoaca in a moment.

5)DINWIDDIE (1-0, was #5, DNP, at Colonial Heights)---The Generals have played once, way back on September 3rd. A missed game in August with GW-Danville that was scheduled to be played Tuesday night is now set for November 1st. It can't be pushed back again, as the regular season must end by November 6th. They'll need a good return performance as a trip to Matoaca is next, followed by Hopewell coming to face the Generals and the touchdown cannon.

6) HOPEWELL (2-0, was #6, d. Henrico 36-0, at Petersburg)---The Blue Devils are back to normal after a COVID pause with wins over I.C. Norcom and Henrico to their credit. They now look for a second road victory when they face the Crimson Wave.

7) DOUGLAS FREEMAN (4-0, was #7, at Mills Godwin)---The Mavericks used defense, a timely turnover, and the arm of Owen Fallen to earn a surprisingly easy 38-6 win at Atlee Friday. It's never easy beating the Eagles in this huge West End rivalry, and Axselle Stadium should be rocking Friday as Mills Godwin tries to finally earn the first victory for head coach P.J. Adams, while George Bland's Mavericks know they have a good thing going right now, and, should they run the table, the top seed in Class 5, Region C is certainly within reach.

8) MATOACA (3-0, bye week, at #4 Thomas Dale)---We believe Matoaca is for real. But for those who may not, here's their chance to plant their flag and prove they are among the best teams in the clogged Region 4B, where eleven teams are anywhere from 3-0 to 2-1, and only eight teams make the playoffs. The Dark Zone defense of the Knights must contain "Johnson and Johnson", as Cameron and Quentin have made life miserable for opposing defenses this season.

9) HERMITAGE (1-1, was #9, l. to #3 Varina 28-21, at Glen Allen)---No shame in losing to Varina. Now the Panthers take the shortest road trip in the Central Region down Staples Mill Road to face a Jaguar squad searching for answers after an 0-2 start and a COVID pause. If the Panthers want the top seed in Region 5C, they need to sweep the Colonial District, which would include a win over Douglas Freeman, and root for Varina to hand Highland Springs another loss come November 5th.

10) PATRICK HENRY (2-1, was #10, d. Deep Run 34-0, at Atlee)---The Patriots did what they were supposed to do last Friday, and their road sojourn continues this week inside the county, where all four teams now reside in Region 4B, including the Atlee Raiders, who simply failed to take advantage of first half scoring opportunities in their big loss to Douglas Freeman. It's Jayden Mines and Jordan Allen vs. Caleb Warren and Keith Green. Special teams may play a factor in this one.

11) ST. CHRISTOPHER'S (3-0, was #11, d. St. Alban's School 37-6, at Norfolk Academy, 6:30pm)---The Saints, looking to be the cream of the crop in private schools in our area, should be favored in their Friday trip to Norfolk. Another, bigger trip is on the horizon, as the Saints begin October at Benedictine, then there's Fork Union and Woodberry Forest before a date with Trinity Episcopal, who already defeated Benedictine, on October 23rd.

12) MIDLOTHIAN (2-0, was #12, DNP, at Monacan)---The Trojans hoped to secure their first win over L.C. Bird in 35 years last Friday, but the game was postponed at the last minute due to COVID concerns in Chester. The Skyhawks returned to practice Monday, and now the Trojans concern themselves with a Monacan team that overcame a shaky opening loss at Hanover to pick up two victories and put themselves in that top eleven plateau in Class 4, Region B. A win over the Trojans would vault Monacan back into the playoff conversation, while a Midlothian win keeps them chasing Douglas Freeman in Region 5C with Highland Springs and Hermitage all around them.

SUPER 12 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL POLL---WEEK 6
We've already hit the "midway" week of the 2021 regular season, a season unlike any other, with tons of postponements and cancellations, big game surprises, and few unbeaten teams. Let's take a look at the latest RVA Sports Network "Super 12" High School Football Poll, taking into account games played through September 25th,


1) HIGHLAND SPRINGS (2-2, was #1, at Henrico postponed, vs. Colonial Forge): The Springers see their game with rival Henrico moved up to Thursday, then postponed at the eleventh hour, rescheduled currently for October 12th. Another big out of town opponent comes to the new Kreiter Stadium Friday in the form of perennial Class 6 power Colonial Forge, who arrive with an uncharacteristic 2-2 start.

2) MANCHESTER (3-1, was #2, d. James River, at Clover Hill): The Lancers are rolling, easily defeating their in-county, Class 6, Region A rival last Friday, traveling this week to a Cavalier team who has underperformed so far this year, but who also scored 48 points in a shootout win over Huguenot.

3) VARINA (3-0, was #3, d. Mechanicsville, vs. Hanover): The Blue Devils' win at Hermitage the previous week has seemed to become a springboard for Marcus Lewis' second team at the helm. They aren't afraid to take big chances in all three phases of the game, recovering two onside kicks, scoring 39 first half points, and returning two interceptions for touchdowns in a 52-13 win at Mechanicsville on High School Football Friday Night last week. If they can slow down Cole Elrod, it could be another big night this week when the Blue Devils host the Hawks.

4) DINWIDDIE (2-0, was #5, d. Colonial Heights, at #5 Matoaca): Will an expected win for the Generals in their return to play at Colonial Heights be enough to prepare them for a battle with already-battle tested Matoaca on the road this week? The Warriors proved they are for real by handing Thomas Dale their first defeat last Friday, holding off a late Knights comeback attempt. This game will go a long way to playoff positioning in Class 4, Region B, which includes defending region champion King George and Varina, who both enter the week 3-0.

5) MATOACA (4-0, was #8, d. #6 Thomas Dale, vs. #4 Dinwiddie): Matoaca no longer has to prove they belong in the upper echelon of Region 4B. Now, they must conquer a long-time Central District foe who now is also a region rival. We may look back to this game come November 5th as pivotal to everything from who holds the number one seed in the region, or, who begins the playoffs at home or on the road. In one of the toughest regions in the Commonwealth, winning at home head-to-head is imperative.

6) THOMAS DALE (2-1, was #4, l. to #5 Matoaca, at Prince George): It was so much to ask the Knights, who have spent an emotional September dealing with issues related to COVID-19, issues that are much bigger than football games. While they fell short at home to Matoaca, they now must prepare for a Prince George team who saw their Homecoming game last week against Meadowbrook postponed due to no fault of their own and, at 0-3, in big-time need of a victory in Class 5, Region B.

7) HOPEWELL (2-0, was #6, at Petersburg postponed, vs. Colonial Heights, Saturday 1pm): The Blue Devils know they won't play a full ten-game schedule, as their game with Varina, which should have started the season in late August, postponed twice, is now canceled. They hope to return to action Saturday at Merner Field, before two huge road trips October 8th to Dinwiddie, and October 15th to Thomas Dale.

8) ST. CHRISTOPHER'S (4-0, was #11, d. Norfolk Academy, at Benedictine, Friday 4pm): The Saints have been handling their business without much trouble in recent weeks, but, as we learned from Mills Godwin/Douglas Freeman last Friday, when it's a rivalry game, anything can happen. Benedictine lost early to Trinity Episcopal, and needs this victory in the race for the VISAA playoffs. This is a tough road trip for the Saints, but, if they come away with a win, they become serious championship contenders.

9) PATRICK HENRY (3-1, was #10, d. Atlee, at Henrico): The Patriots had a surprisingly easy time of it at rival Atlee, pushing their in-county rivals below them in the standings in Region 4B when simply taking win-loss records into consideration. The first official region rankings, based on the Virginia High School League (VHSL) point system, will be released in two weeks. The Patriots hope that their trip to Henrico happens, as the Warriors continue to deal with coronavirus issues, and have only played twice this season.

10) MIDLOTHIAN (2-0, was #12, at Monacan postponed, vs. Cosby): The Trojans have seen their last two games postponed due to COVID, first with L.C. Bird at the last minute, then this past week's scheduled trip to Monacan, now set for a week from Monday. They haven't played since defeating Clover Hill September 10th and are one of only two undefeated teams (J.R. Tucker) left in Class 5, Region B.

11) HERMITAGE (1-2, was #9, l. at Glen Allen, vs. J.R. Tucker): When was the last time that the J.R. Tucker Tigers came into the "Cat Bowl" against rival Hermitage with the better record? Tucker's win over Deep Run Friday gave them their first 3-0 start since 1992, when they began the year at 4-0. Suddenly, the Panthers find themselves under .500 after the surprising overtime loss at Glen Allen, who also move to 1-2 in a wide open Region 5B playoff race. If the Tigers win at Chester Fritz, they may tear down their new school building in celebration (since there isn't a completed football field yet, so you can't tear down the goalposts....)

12) DOUGLAS FREEMAN (4-1, was #7, l. at Mills Godwin, vs John Marshall): For our money, the biggest shocker of a crazy Week 5 was the Mavericks' 21-7 loss to previously winless Mills Godwin on Friday. But, of course, we tell you constantly, when it's Rivalry Night, anything can happen. Thankfully for the Mavericks, they will be prohibitively favored against winless John Marshall, who doesn't have the offensive weapons that the Eagles have, then they host currently winless Deep Run before an October 15th showdown with Hermitage.

WEEK 7 FOOTBALL PREVIEW​


This will be the final week of high school football prior to the scheduled first unveiling of region rankings by the Virginia High School League (VHSL), scheduled to occur on Monday. So, as we take a quick look at standings in each of our regions in our coverage area, please be aware that the region standings come Monday could look different, and, in some cases, quite different.
Strength of schedule is a huge positive in the VHSL power points system. Thus a 3-2 (or 4-2 or even 3-3) Highland Springs will likely be near the top with the likes of Douglas Freeman and Midlothian in Class 5, Region C. Teams that end their season playing less than ten games will need some luck, in that games canceled against better teams will hurt their playoff chances more than if you lost a game to a winless opponent.
It's going to be a wild ride between now and November 7th, so buckle up!
NOTE: *--means currently a nine-game schedule, **--means eight-game schedule
NOTE II: The top eight teams qualify for postseason in each region.
