Since you guys have jumped on the topic already I will give my usual preview of the week, not only of this game but the other two, which will be meaningful as well to the teams involved.
First of all, my take on last Friday's games is that all three of them had something in common. There was no surprise in terms of who won but the scores were a different matter altogether. Nobody thought Riverheads would be able to shut out Staunton, nobody really thought Fort Defiance would come that close to Stuarts Draft, and the Wilson/Gap game was thought to be a toss-up, not a runaway win for either team.
So where does that leave us for this final night of the regular season? Here is my take........
STUARTS DRAFT AT RIVERHEADS: The irony of this game is that for most of the season, there were concerns that Riverheads was not its usual juggernaut self, and that teams like Wilson or Staunton had the potential to make things interesting, along with the Cougars of course. But instead the others beat up on each other, leaving only Riverheads and Draft to battle it out for the title on the final night. So with RHS unbeaten in district play and SD with only one loss, this will be THE championship game, which it seems like it has been for the last half dozen or so years. If you compare scores, RHS has performed better against every other district opponent than the Cougars have. Look at their respective games with Staunton for example. So on paper, it would appear that CCC and company will be able to score at will against the Cougars and that BG's prediction (above) or something similar will be the expectation. But you can't discount the rivalry aspect of this one and you can bet the Draft has been pointing to it on the calendar all season. I expect something like a close first half with RHS pulling away in the second to a 2-3 TD win.
STAUNTON AT WILSON: This is a clear case of two teams going in opposite directions. Staunton has fallen apart and if they had not won 7 games to start the season, they might be staying home this post-season. Wilson on the other hand seems to have balanced both sides of its offense and might be peaking at the right time. Now let's be realistic about the other teams in the Region 3-C field, but for the moment, these two should both make the playoffs and therefore this game is all about fighting for seeding. I expect a 35-14 kind of Wilson win, but most likely early playoff exits for both teams.
FORT DEFIANCE AT BUFFALO GAP: Again this game is important to both teams. I assume the Bison are still in the mix for the number two seed in 1-B, which of course means a first round bye and a regional semi-final at home on the 18th. So that alone should motivate them to take care of the Indians. But Fort, other than their blowout loss to Riverheads, has fought everybody tough, and even though they are out of the playoff picture, or at least I assume they are, they would like nothing better than to make life miserable for their country cousins. I see something like a 27-20 Gap win.
I am pretty sure that Waynesboro's odd schedule is now finished and for them that could not come a moment too soon. The high expectations just didn't pan out for the Purple and Gold but there is always next year.
