Longtime Powhatan High School assistant, Ernie Henderson (61) (Pictured Right), passed away this past Friday. Ernie's last season as a coach was the 2018 season. Henderson coached football at Powhatan for 35 years. Henderson participated in the 1974 state championship game for the Indians and is a 1976 graduate of the school. He has also coached in the VHSCA All-Star Game and was also on the coaching staff for Powhatan’s indoor and outdoor track teams. Henderson was named the Richmond All-Metro Assistant Coach of the year in 2007. In addition to coaching at Powhatan for 35 years, Henderson also played at Powhatan for 4 years. He was a player for Powhatan when they made there first state championship appearance in 1974. Henderson went on to earn a D1 scholarship and start for 4 seasons at Appalachian State University. Ernie was either a coach or a player in all 5 of Powhatan's state championship appearances.
On top of all his accolades as a coach, Ernie was an outstanding human being. He cared for his athletes and was an asset to his community of Powhatan. He made a huge impact on the lives of many young men during his long tenure at Powhatan High School. Ernie will be missed.
