Saint John Paul the Great Catholic
2014 Record: 7-4 (Playoffs)

Saint John Paul the Great Catholic made their first playoff appearance since the 2010 season after finishing the season with a 7-4 record. They lost to Bishop Ireton in the State semi-finals after having defeated the cardinal the week before,

"We had a heavy junior-senior laden team last year and they found a way to win some close games they may have lost in the past ," head coach Jerry Sarchet said. "We beat our rivals Bishop Ireton to get into the playoffs but then we turned around and lost to them a week after so it's been a good motivation tool but also one of the toughest losses I have ever had as a head coach."

Offense

Most of the skill position are back including the top passer and three top rushers. Quarterback Brandon Perroots (5-foot-9, 160) will be back to run the offense after passing for 650 yards with four touchdowns while rushing for 530 yards and seven touchdowns. He's a 4th year starter along with Michael Horan (5-foot-10, 170) who led the team with 1054 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. Michael Foster is a 3-year starter and he chipped in 419 yards rushing. The Saints graduated their top two receivers but Chauncey Wallace brings speed to the position.

The offensive line was a team strength last year but three starters will need to be replaced. John Simms returns on the offensive line and Coach Sarchet say's he's going to have to show some leadership. "Getting the offensive line back to where they were last year is key because that's who really carried us last year."

Defense

Simms will also battle inside the trenches after making 30 tackles last season. Chauncey Wallace (6-foot-3, 190) is an impact player on defense and he led the team in tackles with 81 from the strong safety position. This season, he will make the switch from safety to linebacker. Jack Cunningham (6-foot-1, 195) will start at one linebacker position where he made 41 tackles and two sacks. while Foster and Horan join the front seven.Joe Smith was a fireplug totaling 78 stops.

"Linebacker play is so key," Sarchet said. We need our returning starter to mesh in with the new guys to set the front get on the same page. The defense was our strength last year. We have four key guys we have to replace. We lost a couple of good linebackers and a shutdown corner. We have some big shows to fill."
