Salem Jv coach

will Coach Yuhas be back? And why is Jv game vs Amherst now at Salem?
I saw Coach Yuhas at the 7v7 about a month ago. I talked to him and he looked and sounded good. Knowing him, he will be on the sidelines for the JV & Varsity games this fall. I'm not sure why the JV game was moved to Salem, but that's one more game I will hopefully be able to attend.

Just curious. What days are the Salem JV games played? Back in the Burg, they're all on Wednesdays.

JV games in most places, Salem included, are Thursdays, barring inclement weather or other unusual circumstances. With Thursdays reserved for walkthroughs for Friday games, staff and varsity players are usually able to make home JV games and even some away games. Gives the staff a chance to evaluate the pipeline in live game conditions.

Thanks. I can't account for "most" places but it is Wednesday's in the Burg area. That includes some pretty good teams like N. Stafford and Ponnax. But I will defer to you on this and will accept "most".

I just took it for granted that Varsity HCs attended every JV game, whether home or away. It's a competitive advantage. In my former area, Coachs like Rich Serbay, JC Hall and Bob Oliver have never missed a JV game I've attended.

Now, Salem does things differently. in many ways. Right down to how they put up their roster and that's a good question. Did all those 90+ guys on the roster get rings?

No disrespect to Salem. The record says their system works and other programs would be remiss in not reviewing their methodology.

I will revise "most" slightly to say places I am familiar with. I had not heard, until you mentioned your area, JV teams not playing on Thursday unless there were special circumstances, however, maybe there are other areas that do it on different days. I don't think the head coaches attending differs much from area to area and I think most all of them try to make every game, however, there are conflicts from time to time. Even in those cases a trusted assistant is present as a stand in at worst. Someone actually from Salem may be able to answer the ring question. I do not know.

I believe Coach Magenbauer attends JV games, but I'm not sure about all of them. As for the rings all of the players from Varsity and those pulled up for the playoffs received rings. If I counted correctly there were 54 dressed out for the Championship game + 3 out for the year due to injury, for around 57 rings. I was corrected by a fellow poster on that.

Thank you Wikki for clarifying the Amherst situation, I didn't know why the JV game had been moved to Salem.

As for the rings all of the players from JV/Varsity received rings because Salem considers them 1 team that's why they are all listed on the same roster. Idk if that's unique to Salem, but about $18,000 was raised for the 90 or so rings at about $200 each.

Actually, only the Varsity and the JV players who were pulled up for playoffs received rings. Once the JV kids were pulled up they became a part of the varsity team. Only about 10 or so were pulled up to Varsity for the playoffs.

Ok thank you for clarifying, so probably around 57 kids got rings then. For the Championship game I think I counted 54 dressed out, plus 3 out for the year with injuries in Barnette, Cummings, and Hudson.

I heard today that the jv coach will be Adam Hill. I don't really know anything about him, I think he is a former Salem player. Hopefully someone can tell us more. Thanks to Wikki for jv location reason.

Mr. Hill played quarterback for Glenvar. I think he graduated in '02, but I'm not certain. He was a very good high school qb; I saw him play a few games. He was very quick, ran the ball well, and was a tough competitor. He was undersized, especially for a qb, so I'm not sure if he played anywhere in college. He should be a great addition to the Salem staff, from my limited knowledge of him.

Hill was Glenvar's qb in one of the best high school games I ever saw, a 42-41 Highlander win at James River in 2001.

That sounds right, I think I heard that. Does the jv practice with varsity? Same position coaches working with all?

That is a question I'd like to know the answer to. Just to hear how other teams work their programs.

close2salem should know, maybe they will answer
That will be cool. Obviously, I can only authoritatively comment on one program.

I know my Cougars JV and Varsity practice on completely different fields. Both at the same times. They can't even see one another. Coachs are not shared between these teams. They run the same offenses and defenses. There is clear direction from JC Hall. He watches the JV games. But the JV HC is damn good and he is autonomous in running the JV. JC does this right. IMO.

But there is occasional interaction. They do not scrimmage one another but there is occasional trash talk that is settled on the field. After all, they share the same field house, weight room and locker room.

No fights. Just full pad, head to head, 1 v 1. Still, there is hardly a Wednesday when the entire Varsity is not there to support their JV brothers.

I'm not sure about the position coaches remaining the same this year. I'll let you know soon. The JV and Varsity practice at the same time, but not together. They practice in close proximity to each other. I mean right beside each other. If you watch practices, you can see both JV and Varsity practice. Excellent JV players will get "pulled up" to practice with varsity. This usually isn't a permanent situation. JV players could flow between JV and Varsity practices. It's always big news if you're on JV and get to practice with varsity for the day. The coaches work together to coach both teams. For games, there is a set of coaches who man the sideline for JV. These same coaches can be seen on the varsity sideline on Friday nights.
