Salem trying to raise money for the championship rings

Hey Mike, I work in Roanoke , I can't get the link to pull up, is there a place I could drop a donation off at

If it wasn't for football, bands probably wouldn't exist. Well, except maybe a parade or two.

Dinwiddie had the same issue in 2013. The community rallied and with the help of a few big donors the rings were purchased at no cost to the team or kid. I would not expect a school board or system to absorb the cost. Most education budgets are stretched to max already. Good luck in the fundraiser.

Both those comments are ridiculous. If you don't want to donate then don't and mind your business. School system coughing up 18000$ for rings, not a chance that would happen.
Without knowing the cost compared to previous years, I have no idea how to address this. I do have a question or two. That's 90 rings Mike. You said several times that Salem roster includes both JV and Varsity players. Why 90 rings if there are some that never played a Varsity down? Also, why the January cut off date? I am not familiar with the manufactured ring process but that seems a little tight for rings that don't need to be presented till June. In addition, most parents can probably come up with some kind of money. Even if they just go half, is $18000 necessary? Curious more than anything else.

Yes the jv players that dressed will get rings.

It's an every year problem for almost every team

Not sure if 90 rings will be purchased or if it's just for the players that were pulled up. I know the JV and Varsity are treated as 1 team, whether or not that means a ring for everyone? My comments were based on another poster from the Salem Football Fans Facebook page. If it's just Varsity I counted 56 for the Championship game. That would be $11,200 instead of $18,000.

The January cut off date was apparently from AD Chris King. That was another thing written on the Salem Football Fans Facebook page. Not sure for the reason on that.

Read a couple of the comments on that link and it was not positive. A band parent seems upset
We need to be looking at this from the perspective of the parents of the players who would be responsible to pay for the rings. That's a lot of money to be paying right around Christmas. This is a good "problem" to have. Rather than infighting let's get behind the solution that's right there on the table. The 14-0 campaign, 1286 people donating $14 to raise the money!
This is not directed at you Wikki, but at the band parent. The band does a good job maybe we could have a fundraiser for the band parents to help support their expenses.

Sorry I just noticed your post pit1fan, you can either drop off the donation at Salem HS or mail it to:

Salem HS
Attn: Chris King AD
400 Spartan Dr
Salem, Va 24153

On your check on the memo line write "State rings" so it goes to the right place.
Thank you for your help pit1fan!

That is an idea Mike. Spartans got to the Title game. Salem could simply take their share of the gate and put it toward rings.

That said, IMO, rings should go to dressed players on the sideline for the Championship game. There always seem to be some injured that just have jerseys but these guys got you there so they get rings too. JV doesn't fly for me.

Also, I recognize that the band has been working since August too but they didn't play a down. They're on their own. Next thing you know, the Cheer leaders will want rings. The line needs to be drawn somewhere.

Just one more suggestion for you personally. This is a minefield. Stay out of it. Let Mag's and the AD deal with it.

Ok , it's on the way, congrats to the Spartans , and good luck next year, from GW Danville

Now, now, that's not true. The bands have their own competitions that they go to as well as perform at the football games. The Marching Band, Cheerleaders, AND the Football Team make up a good football program. Cheerleaders have their own competitions too. Marching Bands get trophies, not rings for winning competitions, even championships. Same with Cheerleaders. Championship rings are a football thing. It's a hard time of the year to come up with the $$ for rings, so why not have a fundraiser? Nothing wrong with asking for donations, but maybe have an auction or hire a group of boys out to do winter yardwork, maybe snow shoveling.

Don't just ask for the money, go out and earn some of it too.

I actually like that idea of earning it. A bunch of Spartans players with their Jerseys on could just walk the neighborhoods, raking leaves and doing yard work. A group that large and currently as famous could make a heck of a lot of money in just 1 weekend. With the time off for Christmas, the kids could probably collect it all before the new year.

I think what is catching many Salem fans by surprise is that in the past 6 State Championships that Salem had in football the City of Salem paid for the rings. In fact the city paid for all sports State Championship rings. I remember years ago when Dennis Haley had four rings (three for football and one for basketball) There was no need to raise money. Raising money is probably the better way to go in today's economic and political climate. I think the fundraising effort is well on it's way already. Don't think it is going to be a problem.

Reminds me of the scene in "Christmas Vacation" where the boss gets called out for cancelling the traditional Christmas bonuses, but not telling anyone he was doing it. Wonder if Cousin Eddie will make a trip to Salem? (Probably not, I hear he has legal troubles in Canada!!)

I don't take it that way, I was just sharing what the comments were. Football is definitely the program that brings in the most money for most schools. Amherst football team raised their own money last year so they could go to Florida and play and then go to Disney. That was about $1500.00 a kid. They did it so I have no doubt that Sslem can do it as well. I hope they do because they deserve it

Most of the shock here is as said, because previously the city sucked up the hit for the rings. I've no doubt once they spread the word they'll raise the money easily.

Didn't know that teams got a share of the gate, thought they only received a share of travel expenses.

VHSL gets their cut but both participating teams get their's too.

What's not known is the amount the Amherst ladies get for feeding the VIPs. But I've heard it's worth every dime.

I just checked for the forms on vhsl.org and there is a provision on the regional Directors financial report that says vhsl gets 35% of the net for regional games but there isn't anything on the state directors form. I was interested and checked the handbook which states that the vhsl gets 100% of the net from state games.

We don't get anything. We don't pay for the food but cook and serve it. The benefit we get is to sit in the suite and watch both games and meet some nice people. Yes we always get compliments on the food

And the cost of rings is certainly not a reimbursable expense. But I'm sure everyone realized this. Nope, the cost of rings is on the locality.

If anyone has any doubt that the Salem community will not step forward and donate the funds necessary, all you need to do is look at the football program. It's as thick as phone book. And 99% of the contents is local business advertisements. The purchase of football program adds serve only one purpose. And that is to support the team. The Salem business community will put up the money faster than the AD can add it all up. Never fear, the kids will get their well deserved rings.

I knew that Wikki, but I figured it was best to wait and let you tell Shaunty.

If you don't mind, I'll have to check that.

The cheerleaders were actually supposed to receive necklaces.

I started a Salem Football Fans Facebook page on 11/11/15, fast forward 6 weeks & there are 900+ members. Salem loves football, everybody knows that.

My granddaughter played on the 2014 and 2015 Brookville State softball championship teams. The booster club bought their rings both years. Gary Ferguson does a great of job of getting the boosters involved in his softball program.

I can see that because it is not that many but Boosters would not be able to afford as many rings as for a football team. I believe most boosters would help with part of the price for rings
