Why do these colleges push higher scores on SATs and ACTs for some but not all?

Do they use this excuse to push a preferred walk on or do they use it because they just dont want a kid and rather say "your score needs to be higher?"

I know a kid that a D1 college told him he needed to get score up 20 points and they would consider him. SMH

Would love to see mike and marcus vicks SAT scores.

The NCAA has rules regarding test scores and GPA. Some colleges and universities have a higher requirement than the NCAA. Regular students requirements to gain admission are often much higher than those of athletes.

And yes, if a kid is borderline on his scores and/or abilities, a school may tell him he needs higher just to keep him away.

He is trying to explain to you that the NCAA has a sliding scale. See the link

http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/eligibility_center/Quick_Reference_Sheet.pdf

In addition, some schools have higher standards than the NCAA. In Va for example, WM, Richmond and some others won't recruit you unless you have a 3.0 and 1000 SAT.
This is correct about the sliding scale and higher requirements at some schools. For example, the average GPA for incoming Freshmen at UVA is 4.2.

One of the first questions asked by recruiters is "how are his grades". Yes, athletes are often given a break when they don't meet standard student requirements but there are minimums, even for them. This is necessary at the higher schools. Why recruit a kid who can't get through his Freshman year academically? This is also why athletes on scholly are strongly encouraged to steer away from courses of study like Engineering, Math, Pre-Med and Pre-Law. Even though Football is not supposed to be more than 20 hours per week by NCAA rule, schools get around it and it's more like 40 - 50. Only a very rare individual can take the harder course routes and still play their scholly sport.

You also seem to think College courses are like HS. Not even remotely. HS is so dumbed down now, to most incoming students, College is another Dimension.

What does Marcus or Mike Vick have to do with the kid you're referring to?

A Little hard?
You are such a wise guy, huh? Didn't know I had to write a dissertation on a message board to make you believe I have 2 degrees. Why do I even care?

Just for giggles though...

You have 7270 post on here and only have 317 likes
I have 496 with 132 likes.

4% of your post get liked in comparison to my 27% (rounded up from .266...) post.
I would say somebody enjoys and understands the point I am conveying in my post.

Now back the the dialogue...

Thank you for this information. I didnt know they push athletes to take less stressful degree tracts due to sports regime of college athletics.

The boy's are young and can get through the grind should they choose a harder path. But College Sports is two full time jobs and, as you would know, College courses are night and day from Public HS. Just like comparing HS Football and College Football. Every player on the team is All-State caliber. Everyone is faster, stronger and more talented than anything a player has previously faced.

Imagine working now two full time jobs that are more physically and mentally demanding. This is not like working at McDonalds and putting the brain on cruise control for 8 hours.

At DI Colleges, you get a tutor right out of the gate and required study halls. The team gets weekly reports on your academic standing and see the academic advisor frequently. These will do everything they can to make you successful. In other words, keep you academically eligible to play. "Suggesting" an easier track is one of many tools to do that and why you'll see so many athletes with a degree in "Recreational Management".

The standard day starts with weight training and conditioning at 0600. Classes are scheduled early so you can be ready for practice at 2. Evening meetings start at 7. You get off at 9. Then you get to actually do school work in a dorm that normally parties till 2am nightly. These are just some of the reasons most kids don't make it past season two. It is quite a significant adjustment and MOm and Dad aren't there to supervise.

Congratulations on the 2 degrees. That is something you should be extremely proud of. Just because someone says they cannot tell how "smart" you are on a message board, doesn't mean a thing. That's like trying to infer something from these keyboard warriors that are all over the internet. I am going to be mean to you and say I will beat you up, in the internet world that guy comes off as someone who is 6'3 250 of straight muscle, whereas he could be 5'6 and 140 pounds.

In Shauntclair's defense, it was only the last year or to that they started with the likes and what not. He is also more prevalent on 4A board and tends to rattle peoples cages.

I would tend to not go by like percentage or things like that. I have been on here for years and people have said how good of a poster I am and insightful whatever that means lol. I don't know that many likes. I also think it comes down to the topics that are discussed and somewhat the region of the state you are discussing.

But in closing, in most cases I would prefer your types of posts as opposed to his.

Gunz,

I wasnt coming off like a smart tail. I was pleading my case that I have a Masters degree. I did not mention I work in a high school. So I know how hard college classes are in comparison to high school classes.

Thanks for letting me know about the like button. Okay, well that makes more sense.
