One team that I think is capable of beating any other 2A west team on a given night/day is James River. They could be like the Glenvar team from last year. They have quietly built a resume (6-2) including a good win over Radford. They played Glenvar tough right down to the very end of the 4th. They also played well and gave fits to Lord Botetourt, one of the best 3A teams. If you're the #1-2 seed don't take them lightly (looks like they'll be 7-8) or you may be sitting home in round 3.

Are there any other teams? Right before the playoffs is the time to discuss them

I really don't see any teams out of the West that would be considered in this category however if i had to pick one, i would say Graham because of youth and they have a dynamic player in Cousins that can take it to the house on any plan.

I don't know enough about the East teams other than Goochland and i wouldn't consider them an "upset" type of pick.

I like King William in the East. Amelia could be trouble if their defense joined the party problem with them is they have skill position players at linebacker... Too small and running at them opens their defense.

Gate City. Wouldn't want to see them in first round if they make it in.
Just look at their tough schedule and how narrowly they lost several games. The first 5 games were very tough. If they beat Central, I think this is an 8-2 team in disguise.

I am totally with you on this. If they draw the right 1st round match up, they could absolutely play spoiler. I will be curious to see how the seeding ends up.

King William can score but can they stop anybody is the only thing I worry about, they have a couple of practices the next 2 weeks and then we will find out, most likely end up a 5 seed. I am ready for some playoffs

Didn't Bruton beat KW? No offense, but Bruton is pretty dreadful, although they did give a very good Poquoson team a scare. I'm not sold on anyone in the East at this point. All have faltered. If 2A is cross bracketing this year, it will be an all West championship.

2A does cross bracket this year. The west absolutely looks stronger than the east. Having said that, when Gretna beat Goochland in 2012 for the championship, the east was "stronger" and Goochland was undefeated. When the playoffs begin, it is a new season! The 10 games before were just to set the bracket. Look at Waynesboro last year. It could be an all west championship game this year or a team in the east may surprise some critics as well........ Time will tell.....

Believe me G-Dog I know what Goochland is capable of. Y'all have arguably the best coaching staff in 2A and when the brackets cross if you guys are the top seed left in the East, whoever travels to Goochland could be in for a tough game to get to Salem.

Appreciate the compliment BCKnights! We learned a few things after playing Buckingham this year. I will be pulling for Buckingham in the West!! I hope you guys represent the JRD well!!!

Wouldn't mind seeing a rematch. Always pull for you guys I got a lot of family in Goochland.

Clarke County is loaded. Do not overlook them. There only loss was to a good 4A Millbrook team.

Too early to overlook teams.... "Real" season begins soon. I am sure Clarke County has a very good team that will compete....

Why would they cross bracket? Doesn't that defeat the East vs. West Divisions playing for the state championship? While I think an argument could be made for cross bracketing (you want the top two teams playing each other), then why even have an East and West Division?

Uhhhhhhh. There is a cross-bracket in the state semi final. Lower west travels to higher east and lower east travels to higher west. It was that way last year as well.

Single A has been doing it for 4 years now. The two best teams in the state should be playing. Regardless of east vs west or not.

I'm new to this, thanks for explaining! So East and West only matters until the Semis. Got it!

Yes Bruton beat KW 1st game of season and Bruton is not as bad as a 1 win team they play in a very good district, I will take a 4 or 5 seed as of now but we just have to wait until the final standings come in.

Gate City, if they get in, are capabale of beating almost anyone. They are the definition of a team much better than their record.

Central isnt bad either.

Central/Gate City is going to be an excellent game to end the regular season this week. They are evenly matched with Central on the rise and Gate City is not really as strong as they were last year. I'm picking GC by 3, but this game could easily go the other way. Central didn't get a lot of talk in the preseason, but they have been quietly getting the job done all year.

Both have great QBs capable of running and throwing for TDs. I think Collier is the better thrower and has by far the better WR in McLung, but WC has the better RB. I think GC wins a very close game. Gonna be a great game, Central was somewhat over looked bc they lost a lot and started a new QB, but they have played very well and will finish #2nd in the Mountain District.

But I still cannot stand Wise fans, their players were calling Noaks the N-word all night long, and their fans believe they should have beat us and the WANT to play us again! LOL! Why any team aside from Richlands want to play us again is ridiculous. They truly believe they will beat us, doesn't matter Union played their worst game of the season, got inside the WC 3-yard line THREE times and got 0 points and that WC only scored in garbage time. Union dominated the game, it was never in doubt.

Wise Central would be my pick to be a sleeper, Luke does a good job down there and the kids play hard for him. The Mullins kid at QB is pretty tough for a soph.

I agree. I always thought Luke was going to be a vey good coach and he seems to be on track to be one of the best teams in 2A.

Sorry but Gate city is no where near the team they were last year. They would have had to tremendously improve since their benefit game to even think about scoring on or stopping any team in the playoffs. Last year they hung a fifty+ score during their benefit game but this year only scored on the JV and the other teams varsity scored at will. The final score was in their favor but not while the actual varsity starters were in.

Depending on how the match-ups pan out, there could be some upsets this post season. Don't count out Gretna just yet. With a little luck, the Hawks could have entered post season with a 7-3 record.
Last time Gretna won state championship was after a 7-3 regular season.

Gretna winning states this year is about as likely as Wilson Memorial winning it.

Gretna is building back up though that's for sure. Slowly getting there

No they are a little different because they have climbed the mountain and won before. They are a far site better than the record shows. Down a little on talent but the QB in there now is a playmaker. Don't sleep on them, we did and they hung a butt whipping on us at our place a few years ago. Mad respect for their program overall.

For a team to win a state championship, a team needs one skill position player that they can "ride" to Salem.

2 losses by 42. One by 35. No wins over an opponent with a winning record.

Are they capable of a first round upset? Of course. Not winning states though.

I agree. But, when you start getting to teams like Union and Richlands and Glenvar, (don't know enough about Appo until I see them Friday) who have multiple skill position players all over both sides of the ball, that one guy may not be enough anymore. Just an outside opinion.

One stud on offense and a rock solid defense...which usually takes 11 guys. Teams will find a weak link in the playoffs. None of which I think Gretna has this year.
