SUSSEX- Head coach Curtis Jefferson was probably preparing for the worse but he ended up getting some great contributions from everyone in a solid performance versus a traditionally solid Washington & Lee team. The Eagles had the typical early season mistakes and there is no need for panic because they just might be a major factor later in the season.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Tight end Pha'Shard Harris (6 foot 4, 200pds) had an awesome day with nearly 200 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns for the Tigers in which one was a 64 yard touchdown reception. Junior Amari Hill also had a big day with 3 touchdowns with excellent catching and passing. Quarterback Malik Delk threw for 4 touchdowns and had a 73-yard touchdown run on the day and looked poised and in control at all times.

Washington & Lee had a very bright spot and that was with the play of quarterback Carson Bell. Bell didn't throw an interception and was rarely off target. He also showed flashes of a great dual threat quarterback. DaQuince Bunns also had some good runs between the tackles showing plenty of promise for the Eagles rushing attack.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:

WASHINGTON & LEE will need to be more physical if they expect to challenge for the Northern Neck district title or have a good seeding come playoff time. Finishing tackles were also problems on the evening. And finally, just make the catch. Too often receivers didn't make catches worrying about the defenders coming up to attack.

SUSSEX CENTRAL needs to wrap up better. There were a couple of times were the big hits didn't knock the ball carriers down and the Eagles got more yards than they should. The Tigers also need to work on their timing as the only time a drive didn't end in a score was because wide open receivers were overthrown. This should be expected in just the first scrimmage.

BOTTOMLINE:

Washington & Lee may have been on the wrong end of this scrimmage blowout but make no mistake the Eagles have the talent to blow a few teams out themselves and they will. Look for coach Josh Wilds and company to go more vertical when the season starts and will put up some big offensive performances throughout the year.

The Tigers will need to continue to improve on the offensive line. Though pass protection was outstanding, it was the run blocking that could benefit from some fine tuning. Sussex Central looks better in several areas offensively than they looked all last season where they were at times inconsistent. Having big strike ability could be the edge needed to take them further.

EXTRA POINT:

Due to a scheduling error football fans will get an early treat in Tappahannock next week. #4 Essex will host Middlesex, King & Queen, and #5 Sussex Central! The Trojans have a tough first part of the schedule and would benefit from the physical play of the Tigers. On the other hand Sussex Central will get a better test for their secondary before facing back-to-back champion Trinity Episcopal out of Richmond. Start time to be posted soon.
