HS looked good against South Co. in the pouring rain Saturday. HS out scored SC 2 td's - O... today, HS was looking shaky. I know they had 5 or 6 starters out today for various reasons, one on the sidelines with a sling on his arm, another in plain clothes. I heard the others were out for Covid protocol issues. It was played as a 2 quarter game... final score was Dale 18 HSHS 7. HS has their work cut out for them... Dale looks like a contender to me! Good running, passing and defense. HS's biggest weakness today I saw was Special Teams play.

I saw T Dale with about 8 kids in street clothes. Spoke with someone in the stands and they said four of them were starters. So it seems both were on level playing fields. Just my point of view, Dale looked more physical, especially in the trenches on both sides of the ball. No doubt Coach Johnson and crew will have them contenders. It's in the DNA at Springs. Dale on the other hand looks like they have something cooking.

Good point. Sounds like maybe the same kind of stuff happening. I agree it was a level playing field. Dale was more physical. What I saw from HS on Saturday and what I saw today was like night and day difference. They are just scrimmages going on too, there is a lot of try this try that, experimenting, filling holes left by those missing. Just saying, I think HS will be okay though, the staff will fix what's not working.

Should make for a better than expected playoff in Class 6 Region A. Getting Manchester and an always tough Dale team to challenge Smith is a good thing. My gut tells me Reg A/B will produce another Title this year!

I'm in Richmond this weekend.. Any scrimmages up here tonight & tomorrow?
Most teams played Thursday. Had I seen this sooner, I would’ve suggested the Life Christian game at Virginia Union last night. Varina/Manchester, Dale/Springs, and Atlee/Herm all played Thursday.

Thanks, I was hoping to get back home for the Dinwiddie Smith scrimmage. The Generals were a good choice in replacing Salem VB. I'm sure both teams showed both early season slop & a bit of brilliance.

I bet that Varina vs Manchester was a good matchup too!!! Any update on that?

I had seen some stuff about Springs vs Dale & a bit of a surprise there!!!

Class 6A will be tuff with Dale & Manchester challenging Smith!!!

I’m not sure about Manchester/Varina but Dale over Springs 16-7 I believe. Herm and Atlee was a 0-0 tie. I heard neither offense scored.

Varina scored once, got down off a big play and maybe their only big play. Manchester moved the ball some what easy at times in the air. Varina was fairly decent up front on DL. Herm wasn't impressive at all they kinda struggled against Atlee. GA over James River 35-7 and I'm hearing Freeman held PH to 1 score??

HSHS regular season opponent Martinsburg, WV vs 6A Massaponax last night in Martinsburg. Martinsburg ran riot over Massaponax 56-7. Massaponax scores on their 1st drive but after that it was all Martinsburg using the running game to set up the passing game. Martinsburg getting fine tuned for the season opener at 2021 4 A State Champion Salem Spartans.

Congratulations on winning a scrimmage. Salem lost theirs 28-21. Make that 28-18 Salem did not kick extra points

Wussy society. I don’t have one problem with Bulldog saying they won a scrimmage. If kids put more effort in practice and scrimmages it would translate into better gameplay, the overall competition would be better.

I don’t think so. There’s a difference between acknowledging the purpose of scrimmages (getting two-deep reps against live opponents) and pretending like there are no winners and losers in sports.

It's a scrimmage. Nobody game plans for them. They are used to evaluate your players. Coaches are on the field and you run I think 12 straight plays.

They won a scrimmage. Congratulations. You would think a program like Martinsburg wouldn't care too much about a scrimmage. They will beat John Champ too

I’m just from a different mindset. Gotta train these kids to take pride in everything they do cause these kids are a different breed now, nothing like what we’re accustomed to seeing. If the kids are happy about beating the sh*t out of one of the better programs in VA in a scrimmage, so be it. It’ll translate to them being a better team on down the line.

I saw that CLEARLY for myself at the HSHS/TD scrimmage. I couldn’t figure out why so many players were missing and others were in different positions. A coach KNOWS his players, and knows who can do what. Every coach has his reasons for scrimmage decisions. It’s not a win or lose situation for the coaches as much as it is to the kids. As a former coach,I can tell you,I knew what my “studs” could do,so I didn’t need to see a lot from them in the scrimmage. Most kids WANT to play, but preparing the others “in case” they are needed down the line is more important to the TEAM. Winning & losing matters to the kids & fans, but not the coaches.

Oh yeah? If that’s the case, why did that “big time QB” who is supposed to be that program changer, look so shaky?

THe sophomore didn’t look shaky! As a matter of fact,he was 5-7 with no picks and no TDs. He was quite good the previous Saturday up at South county, throwing a deep TD in that downpour. The small 3rd string QB DID look shaky! Nassir didn’t play! The running game looked shaky, and I was angry at the game, but I realize why now. The starting D1 DE is NOT going to play left tackle! Knowing what I know now,I have no problem with the way the SCRIMMAGE turned out. I see why the 2 corners that day are offered as WRs! The 2 starting CBs were not even out there. He knows what Braylon can do. There’s a reason HSHS is preseason #1 IN THE STATE! FYI….2018 TD scrimmage ended 6-6! Pootie threw 2 picks in that scrimmage. How’d that season end?

Pootie wasn’t the QB in 2018. Pootie graduated in 2017, meaning his last fall season was 2016. HS is #1 in the state because 5A will be weak this year. Stone Bridge will be Stone Bridge. Hermitage was going to be HS’s toughest opponent in the region but who knows now.. The first 3 opponents will show if HS is all you hype them up to be. Take it to the bank, they will be lucky to go 1-2 during that stretch.

HS will more than likely be the favorite but for the first time in a long time, 5A will be down. HS’s o-line is the weakest it’s been in a long time. Varina looks very good on the plus side. I believe they’ll represent the East in the championship for 4A this year. Their schedule sets them up to be very successful come November.

The kids still come to win no doubt about it. They get super excited when one of the younger kids make some plays. In what Friday night game will you have the opposing teams coaches right behind the offensive huddle? Its a practice against another school nothing more

I agree with you 100%. You’re used to the Salem way. Your guys are going to play with pride whether you’re playing the Auburn Eagles or the Philadelphia Eagles. That’s just the Salem way. Other places aren’t like that. That’s the mentality every aspiring student athlete should have.

My mistake! That was Waller that took them to an undefeated season after throwing 2 picks vs TDale in the scrimmage. They called him Slim. Pootie only lost to Herm. He was out vs Meadowbrook when they lost 8-7. That’s the night Johnson swore he’d always have 2 QBs ready to play. The first 2 games are tough, but imho, the 3rd game is a get well game for the next 3 after that. Sorry, but I still don’t think much of PGEORGE. FYI…I think Independence will be there instead of Stonebridge in the Semis to face HSHS.

I think PG will be possibly the 2nd best team in the region. All of their better kids are now seniors and they’re huge. Playing HS during the regular season is good for them.
