Season Cancelled

Here is another article, that sheds a little more light onto the situation, but leaves me more baffled.

From what I am hearing is that the coach had the players on the opposite side as the Brunswick crowd and the players got up, marched out in a single file line, out some doors, back in to the Brunswick side of the gym and then still in a straight orderly line up to the group they had issues with. They then circled them and went out it...some cheerleaders included. I heard that the coach was in the gym, but not with the team. Administration still has no idea what prompted the altercation and the players refuse to talk.

Wow! Even the cheerleaders got involved!

All I can say is wow! I would support the ban as long as the other unseen videos don't have any other evidence on them.

Probably watching the game - scouting. It's a tournament and coaches probably said go sit together and they talked to other coaches, friends, family etc. Nobody can predict everything, these are teenagers - you can't watch them every second. The kids royally messed up and are being punished for it - the blame is in the right place.

Park View is right down the road, probably 20-25 minutes from Brunswick and this was a one day tournament where you played just one game so it wasn't a lot of scouting going on. It was a Saturday and most likely the team was free to go and wouldn't have required a long bus ride home meaning that they were probably out of the coach's control. The Park View coach wouldn't have let this happen if he was aware of what was going on. It's a sad deal, but sometimes it takes drastic measures for people to learn. I just hope something is learned out of it. Plenty of blame to go around, just pointless to point fingers at this point.

LOL!! Race card coach?? If you act like a criminal, you get treated as such. Job well done by MCPS for cancelling their season. Hate it for the senior but he'll get another chance if he's good enough for the next level. As for the wannabe thugs that thought it was ok to start a brawl, I hope they learned their lesson. All this rap music and other garbage that our young black youth thinks is cool because it's accepted by our "culture" needs to stop. It's poison. Let's stop blaming race and start looking at our selves. Black, white or purple, they acted as criminals and these jails and prisons are full of young black males just like this that thinks it's okay to fight and be violent. This should be a teachable moment for the young men in South Hill. Canceling the season is being nice to these young men.

I understand what you're saying and, to a point, I agree with you. But what about the boys on the team that were not involved in the fight at all? If we are for personal responsibility, I'm cool with that. Seems to me that the more appropriate action to take would have been to suspend the boys involved in the fight for the remainder of the season (maybe from extracurricular participation for the remainder of the school year). That would have punished the boys responsible, sent a message that the community takes this kind of thing serious and that if you are involved in such an altercation, you are done. But it wouldn't punish the entire TEAM for the actions of a few.

Its a TEAM game, even if everyone doesn't play they all get a Letter for there Varsity Jacket correct? No "I" in team.

Let me get what you're saying straight. Since there is no "I" in team, if someone from the team goes out and commits a crime, the whole team should be punished. Right? To me, that's a DUMB argument to make. Even on a TEAM, there is still individual responsibility. If one player flunks out at semester, that ONE PLAYER is removed from the team. If we were using your logic, the whole team should have to pay the price for one teammate not getting it done in the classroom- the whole team should have to become ineligible. Am I hearing you right????

For the actions of a few??? From everything I know about the incident, it was the majority of the varsity team involved, so the season should be cancelled and if I was one of the few who suffered the consequences and lost my season, I would be ticked off and let the others know. The youth of today has no sense of consequences of their actions. They need to be made aware and consequences need to become harsher. Dang, colleges are cancelling seasons for the action of the majority of the team. I believe it was most recently one of the Ivy League schools cancelling a season for the actions of the team violating morals through social media. The PV incident was a fight that caused injury to others, loss of economic gain for Brunswick HS and Parkview HS, a black eye to the school and young men being charged with a crime. I would also bet that those "innocent" players knew that something was up and brewing and did not alert any adult or coach.

My understanding of the situation was that it was four players. Maybe I read that wrong. You make good points. And I'm not saying that I disagree with the decision. I'm just saying that punishing people for something they absolutely had NO involvement in doesn't QUITE seem like justice to me. Maybe your assertion that the players who weren't involved in the incident knew about it is right on the money. But maybe not, too. All I'm trying to point out is that you could punish the situation VERY harshly without punishing other people who weren't involved. That's all I'm saying.

How's it going @HavocRun&Gun. I take you're a VCU fan! Nice to have you on the boards. I agree with you. A couple of weeks ago I defended the Richlands football player that couldn't play in the state championship. As an educator I look at things circumstantial. If I was in charge I'd do exactly what you said.. Suspend the kids involved.. Move some JV guys up and continue the season.. I also understand that there were parents and cheerleaders involved..This was a message to the people in South Hill from the school board. I hope they get things turned around.

No think your misunderstanding, of course if 1 player flunks a semester the whole team shouldn't take the blame, but in this case yes, act like heathens at a school sporting event then yes the whole team suffers, just not the ones involved just my opinion, you don't have to agree, again it's just my opinion

"Its a TEAM game, even if everyone doesn't play they all get a Letter for there Varsity Jacket correct?"

I don't think so. To letter in sport you must actually play/participate in games/meets/matches and it must be a certain number of quarters/innings/meets/matches. Just because you are on varsity you don't letter.

Guess it depends what school you go to

WOW?! I missed all this!

Its a 3A school, so why not get some JV to come up and some players that were cut and finish the season?

As far as the ones involved in fight, NOPE! They would be done for the season.
