Sheeeeerando 10 Skyline 0 Final 6inn.

STEPHENS CITY ? Junior catcher Chase Smallwood finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle leading Sherando with three hits in a 10-0 Northwestern District baseball win over Skyline that was shortened to six innings because of the 10-run rule on Wednesday.
Smallwood went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs, and Jacob Carney went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Carney's two hits give him 112 for his career, breaking the team mark (110) set by Matt McCarty in 2006.
Taylor Loudan went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Justin Angel went 2 for 3 with a double and drove in a run for the Warriors (18-1), who finished unbeaten (12-0) in district play.
Sherando junior pitcher Reid Entsminger (6-0) allowed just an infield single to Skyline's Nick Helmick in the second inning for a one-hit shutout. Entsminger struck out five and did not allow a walk.

McCarty

I know it's a newspaper brief you're using Coach M, but McCarty graduated in 2005 at SHS.

Good to see Chase get his stroke back and Carney has been a hitting machine, no doubt. Wonder if he will end up at Shenandoah?

Sherando called the recap in.

Re: McCarty

... and it's hard to believe that whoever called it in could not remember the year that the best player ever to come through that baseball program graduated.

I mean, really? We're not talking about Joe Smo or a third-string catcher from '98.

The "other" newspaper also had McCarty listed as "06."

Re: McCarty

What does the year really matter? He has a great career, and was a great baseball player. However, what will Carney need to do to be the best player ever at SHS in your mind? Winning the big one should do it. BTW , There are three maybe 4 players as good as or better than Mccarty on this team.IMO

Re: McCarty

Ok I'm going to kill the noise about the best player ever to put on a Sherando uniform.

Two players:

Kelley Washington (Florida Marlins Minor League)
Mike Campbell (State Player of the Year, South Carolina Baseball, College World Series Participant, San Diego Padres Minor League)

Sherando has had several more than solid players to put on the uniform, but you will have to do a lot of convincing to out do the two mentioned above. But I'm sure someone will try.

P.S. Trey Porter wasn't too bad also. (All State, VHSCA All Star Game MVP, Pot State, Minor League - ?)

Re: McCarty

By the way I loved McCarty the man was a bulldog on the mound and was a great kid...I have nothing against him...

Re: McCarty

Wow, hamspear, keep smokin' that good stuff, bro!

McCarty was the best baseball player ever to come through Sherando! No question. He was an impact player as a freshman and was a two-time Northwestern District Player of the Year. If not for his size (5-7), I think a few D1 offers might have been floated his way.

McCarty was, after all, the top pitcher and top hitter on the ONLY Sherando squad that ever made the state Group AA playoffs, his junior year of 2004.

That's great that you are suddenly on the Carney Bandwagon and I have to admit that I have been very impressed at how the kid has been able to hit for average every year he has been a Warrior. In my mind, Chase is still the best player on this team, but no one had the overall tools and impact as a Warrior in his time than Matthew McCarty.

Re: McCarty

Kelley Washington was the BEST ATHLETE ever to come out of Sherando High School. He never really did much special in baseball while there as it clearly was his third sport. A Marlins scout came to watch another player, saw K-Wub, and saw "project." Dollar signs flashed, and Washington ditched a football scholy to Hofstra. Remember that?

Michael Campbell is, in my opinion, the BEST BASEBALL PLAYER ever to come out of the AREA. He played two years at Sherando, so I'll give McCarty's four years credence here. I really thought Campbell might even get to the bigs, but I guess minor league ball never worked out all that well for him. Heard he is a salesman somewhere now. And, he's still just 28?

McCarty was the face of Sherando Baseball. He was there four years and was an impact player for four years with one team. That's what counts in my book.

Wow, 21 base, keep smokin' that good stuff, bro!

But honestly everyone has a right to their own opinions so no big deal bro.

Re: McCarty

well , This is a silly argument, because in this "area" leaves a lot of baseball players that were very good that could be mentioned. Mike Sempeles from JW- 85 team from JW was loaded., Dana Allison from Warren County( best ptcher?), etc... Didn't the Kelley Washington 96 team make a run deep in the playoffs for Sherando? For the record, I really like Smallwood on this team, and he is the best catcher in the area. However, if you look at what Carney does on the bases, defense, and overall, I go with carney.Next year, smallwood or Entsminger.

Re: McCarty

Also you have to think about guys who made the best of their opportunity after high school and did big things. If you do Greg VanSickler would have to be mentioned. A multiple All American at SU when no one was recruiting him hard outside of SU. Jeff Hahn a College World Series participant at Clemson and Minor League - Detroit. I guess this discuss is a clear reminder that this area does produce some good talent for such a small area when comparing to NOVA or the 757.

Re: McCarty

Sorry folks no disrespect to Smallwood or Carney are both solid players right now but they are not playing anywhere near the competition that McCarty,Washington, and Campbell played against... There isn't anywhere near the talent in this area that there use to be back when those guys played ! Don't get me wrong they are good players but not playing against as good of competition....

On the money

I got to agree with terpfan. Nowhere near the comp now as there was then. Really, the sixth and seventh place teams in the Northwestern 10-15 years ago were very GOOD!

In fact, Kelley's brother, John, might have been a better high school baseball player.

And on that '96 team, I believe Sherando got knocked out by Turner Ashby in a low-scoring game in the Region II playoffs, quarterfinal round, perhaps? So, they really didn't get THAT deep.

Re: On the money

Thank you! Finally some voices of reason. I'm glad I wasn't the only one that had the same thoughts.

Re: McCarty

@21Base- You made this comment and I just actually read it carefully. "Kelley Washington was the BEST ATHLETE ever to come out of Sherando High School. He never really did much special in baseball while there as it clearly was his third sport."

He couldn't have been too bad in baseball. The 3rd sport landed him a pro contract and after that didn't work out he went back to the 1st sport and a new position and it got him a pro contract also. How many guys you know in this area that can get a pro contract in two sports regardless if it's their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd best sport?
