With nine members this year, the Shenandoah District has already had a surprise or two. But as always, the teams will start to separate themselves in the coming weeks.

The Stuarts Draft/Riverheads game last Friday was played earlier this time, so it is probably premature to say that it was the "championship" game as it turned out to be last year. But the Gladiators at least now have that important victory behind them. So as we move on from here, the questions to be answered are:

1) Are unbeaten Lee High and Luray the real deal this year and will one or the other present a serious challenge?

2) Can Stuarts Draft run the table the rest of the way and be ready to defend its title if others should stumble?

3) Can Buffalo Gap and East Rock get back in the picture after home field losses to the above-mentioned Leemen and Bulldogs?

4) Is this the year that Page County can move up in the rankings or were Rapp and Nelson really that bad?

This Friday's slate of games will shed "some" light on some of these questions, but looking ahead, we are still at least two weeks away from any game that might be another marquee match-up, such as anything matching RHS, Lee, Luray, and the Draft. So who knows, maybe the really BIG game this year, whatever it turns out to be, will be later in the season after all.

Each week there will be four district games with the ninth team either taking the week off or stepping outside the district. So here is this week's slate:

Buffalo Gap at RE Lee: Even though these two have scrimmaged in the past, this will be their first-ever official game against one another. Word on the street is that the Bison handled the Stauntonians in those scrimmages, but this time around, you gotta look at the home team as the favorite.

Stuarts Draft at Page: Until they prove us wrong, we have to assume that Page just opened its season with some fortuitous scheduling and that they will have their hands full against the Cougars. So expect a bounce-back win for the visitors in this one.

East Rock at Riverheads: For all seven years now, this contrast of styles (air vs. ground) has gone the way of the Gladiators, although they needed a last-second interception in the end zone one year to save the win. You wouldn't think the Eagles can win in Greenville with the Williams to Butler combination now in college, but at the same time, it remains to be seen if this is the same caliber Riverheads team as last year. Expect the Gladiators to come out on top but it could be a close one.

Stonewall Jackson at Luray: All indications are that this will be another year of struggle for the Generals, but hey, can we have a shout out for them advancing all the way to the state baseball final back in June, so they have had their moments. But Friday the Dogs will show no mercy and it will get ugly early.

Wilson at Fort Defiance (non-district): The Indians got that big monkey off their back last week with the big win at William Monroe. So the only thing better than breaking a long losing streak is to start a winning streak. They just may make it two in a row, although I suspect we have some Wilson fans on here who will say "no way."

Would hate to say Nelson is that bad, it's not fair to the players. I will say they are in a developing mode which will take time.

Don't know how the Panthers will fare, but I do know that we will show up at home, ready to play and we'll let the chips fall where they may.

I will pick the following in the other games:

Lee
The 'Heads
Luray
Wilson Memorial

Buffalo Gap vs R E Lee: The Bison will surely come into this game hungry after dropping last week's contest to the Luray Bulldogs. I am hopeful that the Leemen can stay focused and continue to improve as they have done each week to this point. Gap has had a very stingy defense the past few years, so they will present a tough challenge for the Lee offense, but I think the passing game, led by QB Jayden Williams, will be too much in this one for the Bison defense. The Buffalo Gap offense will have a little different look for the Lee defense, as they are running the single wing this year, so that may be something to watch for in this game as well. The combination of deception and power plays in the single wing could cause trouble for the Lee defense if they are not disciplined.

Draft vs Page: I agree exactly with longtimerhsfan's thoughts on this.. Big bounce back win for the Cougars.

East Rock vs Riverheads: I saw the Eagles in action last week vs the Leemen, and they are a much different team than in years past. They lined up in the double wing most of the night and only went to the spread occasionally. They are by no means an easy opponent, but they are not as good as they have been the past few years. I do think they will improve each week, and will be much better in week 10. They are a pretty athletic group that competes, but I think the Gladiators win convincingly this week.

Stonewall vs Luray: Again, in agreement with longtimerhsfan here.. Luray wins big.

Wilson vs Fort Defiance: Glad to see the Indians break the streak, but I will be surprised if they are able to do it two weeks in a row, vs the Green Hornets. They have struggled to slow down two other Shenandoah singlewing/doublewing teams, and I'm not sure they have the offensive firepower to keep up again this week.

Answers to OP's questions:

1) Luray is improved and possibly the most physical team in the district, but I expect them to lose a couple when all is said and done. They need to work on the dumb penalties. RE Lee just might be a legitimate contender. They have been very impressive so far.

2) Draft and Lee could be a real show. I'm not willing to guarantee Draft can run the table just yet.

3) Neither has played the Red team yet, so....no.

4) Sadly, Rappco and Nelco are really that bad. Rappco is at least facing the competition. Nelly hit reset. I heard the explanation for the their decision to go indie and I understand, but I disagree with it.

I have no problem with Nelson doing what they did. You say Rapp Co is facing the competition. Nelson is still playing 9 of 10 games again VHSL opponents. Rapp Co only has 5 VHSL teams on their schedule, with one school being home home schooled team. Nelson is that bad that they simply went out and found 10 opponents that they at least have somewhat of a chance to be competitive with, for the most part. I remember when Altavista did the same thing and it really helped them get their program out of the dumps. Not saying that Nelson will be contenders in years to come but getting a few W's while still in rebuilding mode certainly doesn't hurt the morale of the kids.

I have no issue with Nelson and their decision. They did what they felt they had to do. And up until last year, they had no little league program, so they were behind before they started. I think both of these things will help them become more competitive in the future.

Unless I missed something, which is quite possible, I am not the sharpest crayon in the shed ;) lol, they play a regular schedule except the one game, and there are other teams that dont play an eligible team (such as some teams only having 9 games factor into points), the Governors aren't eligible because they stepped out of district. If it helps them in the future like it has others in the past, then good for them

The difference I see between Rappco and Nelson is their reasons for being independent. Rappco has fewer than 300 students and plays in a mixed district with 2A and 3A teams. They are indie so they can play similarly sized schools. They still play the smaller Bull Run schools even though those (Strasburg, Madison) have historically fielded the better teams. For them, size matters.

Nelson, on the other hand, stopped scheduling good teams half its size like Altavista and WC in favor of small teams that struggle like Craig and Bath. I don't want to disparage Nelson or the schools they are scheduling. I just think scheduling "softer" teams won't make them stronger. It will make them softer too. I wasn't aware they didn't have a little league program, but that's a big part of the problem.

You said in your first post that you heard their explanation for going "indie" and understood it......when they first made the decision, there was a news article and one of the main reasons was not having a little league program.

You also need to think outside of just the football field. How many fans show up week in and week out when you're losing every game? I can tell you from experience at Page County, not a ton. That's a lot of revenue. Schedule "softer" and win some games and create a better atmosphere around the program and the community will show back up. Remember that the football gate helps fund most athletic programs at the school. Go back to the bottom and build yourself back up. That seems to be what Nelson is doing.

There are no 3A teams in the Bull Run District anymore. The 3A's went to the expanded NW District and are playing there IIRC. 13 teams in that league!

If there is a good side to the Rapp/Nelson story, it is that each of them does have at least some success in other sports. Nelson won the state in basketball not "too many" years ago and I think they have done well in soccer recently. And if I am not mistaken, Rappahannock won the state in volleyball this past year, didn't they? As I mentioned earlier, Stonewall came close in baseball this past year, so every school will have its moments if they are just patient.

And a bonus is they play other the final week of the season in Lovingston, so they get to settle the dispute on the field. I might actually make the trip over the mountain to see that.

I just want to say how proud I am of the effort that Page gave against Draft on Friday. I believe the Cougars came in thinking this was the same ol Page team and got smacked in the mouth to start the game off. 3 plays in this game could have made it an entirely different game (as in most games this can be true): Page had a HB toss that hit the back in the chest and bounced off and Draft recovered on the Page 29 and then proceeded to score; Draft had a 3rd and 15 from about the Page 25 or 30 and snapped the ball past the QB, Page's defense lapsed and let the Phillips kid get by and stand in the end zone for a wide open TD catch; and finally Draft attempted a 34 yard FG and missed but Page was flagged for running into the kicker, moved up 5, and he nailed it. There's 17 points. Not saying Page would have won but just a few plays that didn't go their way. I'm sure some will say Draft had a bad game and that may be true. But Page can be competitive the remainder of the season. They should beat SJ and I wouldn't be too surprised at another win (or 2).

I agree. SD didn't play well, BUT take nothing away from Page. They played very tough I was impressed. The qb is a player. I was glad to see them play the way that they did. They will certainly will some more this year

Sounds like they are indeed on the way up. I would give them a good shot to beat Wilson when the time comes as well as Stonewall as you mentioned. Not sure about anyone else. Maybe when they come to Riverheads for the season finale, Dakota will come back to play for old times sake and we will have another one of our 73-41 shootouts!

On a somewhat related note, today's Staunton paper has a big story about how Riverheads and Lee are on a "collision course" even though they don't meet for another month. What do you guys think of such a bold statement?

I think it was printed just to start dialogue and for its entertainment value, but before that game happens, the Gladiators have their trip to Gap this week, and in the two weeks that will precede that big "showdown", Lee travels to Luray (Oct. 6) and the Gladiators host the Bulldogs on the 13th. So from where I sit, if Lee and RHS are still each unbeaten after all of that, then and only then should we talk about this collision course.

There are still many contenders. I doubt the author is saying the district is coming down to just Lee and Riverheads, but it does sound that way.

The only teams I would rule out are SJ, Page, East Rock, and Wilson. The rest are very much in the hunt. Matchups matter. I can see Lee beating Riverheads, but losing to Luray.

I agree with @obguthr. Lots of teams in the hunt and the champ will not be undefeated in my opinion. As the adage goes, styles make fights. Same thing applies to these district games. Gap will be a huge test this week for the Red team.

Page is better than most give credit and I thought last year there would have been a surprise win or two. Don't overlook them shocking somebody this year.

If the champ of the Shenandoah is undefeated this year, then they should do very well in the postseason.

And not trying to put the cart before the horse.........

But it's 'possible' the state 1A and 2A champs could both come from THIS district.
