Things are not going very well for me so far this season. But it is not my fault...blame those pesky Bison. If they would win when they are supposed to and lose when they are supposed to, it would make my job easier on here. But thanks to them, I only have a 3-3 record thus far, instead of the 5-1 that I could otherwise have.
So let me dive into Tuesday night's session and see if I can get back on track and just to prove that I am a glutton for punishment, I will add three Wednesday games into this mix. It will be risky business because of the six games, I only see two of them in which the outcome looks to be pretty safe. So I could easily go 2-4 with this group.
Deep breath now.........The Tuesday games (all district games)..........
Buffalo Gap at Wilson...........Good grief! What am I supposed to do this early in the season with a toss-up like that one? Having seen Wilson and the way they hustle, I will go with them. Also somewhat based on them coming closer to beating Stuarts Draft than the Bison were able to do. So Wilson by 6.
Stuarts Draft at Fort Defiance...........Once again the Cougars hit the road. One paper says they have had only played one home game all year. Who knew? But they have found their groove now, annoying as it is to all opposing teams, and they could win this one if it were played on the moon. So Cougars by 20 or more.
Staunton at Riverheads............Another tough one to call. The Staunton loss to Buffalo Gap was a surprise, so it will either fire up the Storm or demoralize them. Riverheads swept both games last year, even winning in the Paul Hatcher gym for the first time ever, so they would love to make it three in a row, and on paper this is a better Gladiator team than last year. But you just can't ignore Staunton (formerly Lee of course) tradition. I am almost obligated to pick the Big Red but Staunton was my pick at the beginning of the season and they will still make noise this season. RHS by 6 but this one makes me nervous.
And now for Wednesday night's three non-district games involving some of our members.
Waynesboro at Riverheads..............Although they lost by 5, this was one of Riverheads' better efforts of the year. Both teams were unbeaten at the time and the game lived up to the hype. Coming down the stretch, Damien Fisher was too much for the Gladiators to handle, so if they hope to win this re-match, they will have to neutralize him. Immediately after that game, the Giants went into a funk and lost four in a row before getting back on track Friday with a close win over Turner Ashby. So a four-game losing streak tells me that some teams found some chinks in the Waynesboro armor. If the Big Red can find those same chinks, they can win this one and even the score. So even though it is a tall order to expect RHS to win back-to-back games against the two "city slickers," it is almost my duty to predict that they can get the job done. Let's say the Big Red by 4.
Wilson at Monticello...........We don't hear much about the (Mustangs is it?) over here but I think Wilson already owns one win over them. So unless BG wears out the Hornets on Tuesday, let's say they can go over there and make it two in a row. Wilson by 8.
Spotswood at Staunton........This rivalry has produced some classics over the years but this time around the Wood appears to be a step or two above the Storm. Therefore I will go with the visitors by about 12.
