Well we have this non-district business out of the way, and three of the eight Shenandoah teams have managed to escape unbeaten, so now is the time to settle down and let them start whomping up on each other to see who will come out on top.

Starting this week, we will have a full four-game slate each week, and in this case, it is a dandy because you could make the argument that any one of them, if not all four, are up for grabs. There does not seem to be a clear-cut unanimous winner in the bunch. So let's get cracking, using the 2-A board to chat, since five of the eight teams are in fact 2-A this year.

The headliner this week will be Riverheads at Luray, as it matches two of those unbeatens. People have been talking about the Dogs since last year, saying this will be their year and that this game in particular is the one they will be pointing toward. But first of all, we simply CANNOT play this game Friday night. It will be against the rules won't it? The forecast says that Friday is going to be "sunny and pleasant" but everybody knows that Riverheads ONLY plays at Luray on rainy nights. So let's get that detail straightened out first. Assuming that is taken care of, I still see RHS as being at least a touchdown or two better this year. They have two solid wins over quality teams (Lee and Waynesboro), whereas Luray has had to work hard for two of its three wins. I say the Big Red wins this one 24-14, but I will not be surprised if it is more than that. The encouraging news for RHS is that they seem to have adjusted well to the loss of Agnor and appear to have enough backfield depth to take up the slack.

Wilson at Buffalo Gap: The other unbeaten is the Bison, but again, those three wins have not come against the best of competition. Wilson on the other hand gave Waynesboro a decent game in the season opener and held their own against the Leemen. Both teams thrashed Fort Defiance so if you compare scores, they might appear to be just about even. I am going to go with the Bison, just so I can stay consistent with a pre-season prediction that I made. Expect a margin of a TD or less in this one...a blowout by either of these would be a surprise.

East Rock at Stuarts Draft: To me this is the REAL toss-up in this week's foursome, and I do not see any clear clue as to who the favorite might be. The Eagles raised some eyebrows with their impressive stomping of Madison, compared to Luray's nail-biter with the Mounties, but they have two losses and can ill afford a third one if they hope to make the playoffs again this year. Draft on the other hand pulled out a win that surprised me at least with their three-TD win over Broadway. So the more I think about it, this one may not be the barnburner I thought. I will go with SD by a touchdown but the Cougars just might make it easier than that, and may be ready to stamp themselves as a contender. Sounds like they have an impressive running game this year.

Stonewall at Page: The past few years this has been the season-ending game, but they are getting it out of the way early this season. Page has had an extra week to celebrate their win over Rappahannock County and they would be beside themselves if they made it two wins in a row. Stonewall has played better competition thus far, and based on that, I will have to go with them in this one. But again it could go either way.

So those are my thoughts....I could go anywhere from 4-0 to 0-4 with this slate. It is just too early to tell for sure until we have a couple of weeks to start separating the teams a little bit.

I was one of the folks who thought Luray would turn the corner this year and win the district, but thus far I'm not sure that will be the case. Yes, they have won their games but it hasn't been pretty. I'm going with Riverheads in that one now.

Going with Gap, Draft, and Stonewall in the other 3.

When you say the loss of Agnor what do you mean? The same Ben Agnor who rushed for over 1,000 yards the past two seasons? Was he a senior last year or did he get injured?

Injured in the firs game vs Lee... done for the year. Apparently acl, mcl, lcl, meniscus type stuff.

I am sorry to hear that. Good luck to him in his recovery. I wish there was a way to prevent injuries in this sport we all know and love. Especially for the kids who are out there every day giving their all, just because they love the game.

Can't say I disagree with any of your predictions. I also tabbed Luray as a favorite but after the first few weeks I think RHS wins by 3 scores.

Right now Gap is who I see as the next closest but we will find out a lot about them Friday. I believe the move of Denton to RB for Wilson is paying off greatly. Did our offense finally get in a groove or was it just who we went up against? I feel this game will either be a 2 TD win by Gap or a narrow win by Wilson.

East Rock never seems to be able to compete with the toughness from this end of the valley. I'll take draft.

Stonewall-Page to me is a toss up

As Keith stated, Ben was injured in the first game of the season. He was kept out of the Covington game as a precaution and the general feeling was that he would be back in action Friday against Waynesboro. But as I described in my recap of that game on the 1-A board, he was on crutches for the coin toss.

The story I am hearing is that he practiced during the week but then was either re-injured or perhaps suffered a new injury Thursday. Not only is he apparently out for the season, but he would have been called upon to help the basketball team this year, so that may be impacted as well. As I stated above, the Big Red seems to have the depth to overcome this loss but this is the second year in a row that a potential All-District (or even better) Gladiator player has been lost for the season before it really even got started.

I think I have read that Buffalo Gap has also suffered a key loss and maybe even some others as well. It is hard for any team to stay healthy in this sport, that's for sure.

Buffalo Gap had a player injured in a car accident as well. I have not heard any updates on that as of late but they have had a slogan for the sports teams in the school for the injured student recently "Play for Clay.".

Since my boys have a bye this week, I'm planning on making the trip to the Riverheads/Luray game. Not a 100% in stone yet. If I get all my plans taken care of before Friday, I'll make the trip.

What I said is true Keith! Lol

An Gap will definitely be playing with heavy hearts again this week. We have all been praying for Clay in the area. Some things are more important than a football game and that is one of them.

That's a hell of a trip to see just a regular season game!

East Rock and Central (Woodstock) have been the biggest pretenders the past ten years when playing Augusta Co. Schools.... Every year they have "potential" and they are going to get it done then they get stomped......

I love to travel and seeing new places. Last time I was out that way was when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade. Went on a class trip to the Luray Caverns. It's only about a 2 1/2 hour drive. I almost drive that a couple times a month when I go hang out with friends in the D.C./NoVA area. Although it's a regular season game, it's still a big game. Preps #3 Riverheads vs. #6 Luray. Plus I will get to see Riverheads for the 1st time. Seeing teams on film is not as good as in person.

We will be happy to have you and hopefully you will be rewarded with a quality game. By the way guys, I don't see any way that I can get on here Friday night and do my usual Riverheads Re-Cap that I like to do. As we all know, the Hoos have a rare Friday night game, so I will be DVRing that and watching it when I get home. So most likely, I won't get back online until Saturday morning.

If someone else wants to take over for me Friday night and report on the game, please feel free to do so, and then I will chime in Saturday with whatever I might have to add.

Any idea when the last non-augusta county team won the Shenandoah District? I remember Stonewall Jackson tying for first when Richard Long was playing, but I can't remember any others off the top of my head. Any ideas?

I could research that at home. I am not sure what years Long was around but I know that he almost single-handedly beat Riverheads in Greenville one night. But then both teams made it to the playoffs that same season and RHS got revenge up at Stonewall.

Also Riverheads had a rare "down year" and only went 4-6 in the 2004 season, so they certainly did not win the district that year. But I don't recall if that was during a Wilson or Gap heyday. Like I said, all my notes and documentation would be at home.

Interesting question!!!!

Looks like it was 2005, Riverheads lost to SJ in the regular season and beat them in the playoffs. Wilson finished 8 and 2 with losses to SJ and Riverheads. I'm pretty sure that was Richard Long's last year,.

I haven't remembered to check my records yet and don't have the time now (beauty rest and all that jazz you know...shut up RHS grad!....don't even go there!)

But I do have time to point out one thing..........the weather forecast is now up to a 50/50 chance for rain on Friday night!!! Do I know my stuff or what?????
