The Skyline Hawks racked up 462 yards of total offense on their way to a 39-8 rout of the Warren County Wildcats on Friday night at Skyline.
The game started out well for the Wildcats, as the Hawks put the ball on the ground in the backfield on their first two plays, and the 2nd time Warren County was able to recover, setting WC up at the Skyline 24. But on 4th and 10, Anthony Domino deflected the Bryce Post pass and Skyline got the ball back with the game still scoreless.
Skyline only managed one first down on their next possession before punting, and Warren County strung three together, moving the ball again deep into Hawk territory down to the 13. But on 4th and 9, Russell Rowe could only pick up a couple of yards and the ball turned over on downs with the game still scoreless.
Skyline did get onto the scoreboard on its next possession, gaining all their yards between David Carter(93 yards rushing for the game) and Darion Santucci(107 yards rushing for the game) on the ground. Carter capped off the drive with a 19 yard touchdown run, and then Santucci ran it in for the two point conversion to put the Hawks up 8-0 with 7:46 left in the 2nd quarter.
Warren County only had one 1st down on their next possession, but flipped the field when Post pooch-punted off the direct snap, and the ball rolled untouched for 48 yards down to the Skyline 17 yard line.
On the first play of the ensuing drive, however, Blake Appleton hit Budder Haley with an 83 yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks up 15-0 with 3:23 remaining in the 2nd quarter.
The Hawks then held Warren County to a three-and-out and got the ball back at their 39 after a Wildcat punt. The Hawks quickly moved the ball down the field on a 30 yard pass from Appleton to Domino plus 15 more yards on the play for roughing the passer. After both teams traded penalties, Appleton hit Carter on a 9 yard pass to set up 1st and goal at the 3. Appleton ran it in on the next play, and a 2 point conversion pass to Benjamin Cagle put the Skyline up 23-0 with 30 seconds left in the half.
After taking a knee to end the first half, Warren County got the ball to start the 2nd half, but could not get anything going on their first series. Facing pressure from Austin Dunlap on 3rd and 6, Post spun around into the waiting arms of Will Wolf who recorded the sack and forced the Wildcat punt.
The Hawks went back to the ground game, running 10 of 11 plays on the ground on their next possession before Santucci ran it in from 4 yards out to put Skyline up 29-0 with 5:14 left in the 3rd quarter.
Skyline's defense came up big again as Warren County turned it over on downs, after going 4 and out near midfield.
The Hawks marched down the field on their next possession, primarily behind the running of Logan Maiatico(71 yards rushing for the game.) Santucci also had a big 24 yard run setting up first and goal from the 8 yard line. Ethan Gue took it in on the next play to put Skyline up 36-0 with 1:24 left in the 3rd quarter.
Warren County did get on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter, as Post ran it in from 10 yards(and ran in the 2 point conversion) to cut the Skyline lead to 36-8 with 9:36 remaining in the game.
The final scoring of the game was record-setting, as after the Hawks' next drive stalled, Douglas Cummings set a new school record by kicking a 42 yard field goal with 5:12 remaining to seal the 39-8 victory.
Appleton was 7-13 for 144 yards passing with one touchdown throwing, and one touchdown rushing. Haley had 3 catches for 102 yards and touchdown. He had a couple of other big plays wiped out by penalties.
The Hawks will travel to William Monroe for the first round of playoffs on Friday night at 7:00. Warren County will face Goochland.
