The Skyline Hawks came back from an early deficit and defeated the Handley Judges by a score of 31-17 at the Handley Bowl. It was the first victory for the Hawks at Handley in Skyline history.
Skyline trailed early 7-0, before the defense helped the offense on Handley’s third drive. In a play starting at their 18, Handley gave the ball to Cameron Davenport, who was stripped of the ball by Phillip Clark. Justin Hayes grabbed the loose ball and powered his way to the Handley 2 yard line. On the Hawks second play after the turnover, Quinton Diggs ran the ball in from the 1 to tie the game up at 7-7 as the first quarter ended.
Disaster struck on Skyline’s next possession, as punter Ryan Scott was unable to get a punt off under an intense rush from the Judges, and he was sacked at the 5 yard line, setting up a very short field for Handley. Skyline’s defense stepped up again and did not allow a yard, including a key deflection by Steven Timbers on a third down pass that forced a 22 yard Handley field goal, and the Hawks trailed 10-7.
Skyline did not let the Judges lead last long though, scoring on their next possession. Key plays on that possession were a 15 yard run by Quinton Diggs, and several passes to Aaron Tasker. The drive was also aided by an encroachment penalty against Handley when Skyline was facing 4th and five from the Judges 25. The drive was capped off by a 17 yard pass from Dylan Hamman to Tasker, who broke several tackles and rolled off the last Handley defender and continued into the end zone. A.J. Dueweke’s extra point put the Hawks into the lead 14-10 with 3:24 left in the first half.
The Judges next drive was stopped by an interception by Jay Roy. Skyline and Handley each had the ball one more time before the end of the half, but neither team could get anything going, and Skyline led at the half, 14-10.
Skyline had the first drive of the second half, and moved the ball down the field. Quinton Diggs had a 16 yard run to move the ball across the 50, and then passes to Aaron Wells for 11 yards, and Aaron Tasker for 16 yards, moved the ball down into the red zone. The drive stalled, but A.J. Dueweke kicked a 37 yard field goal, tying the longest field goal record set by Derek Helsley in 2009 and tied by Aaron Jeremiah in 2012. The Hawks held a 17-10 lead with 8:37 left in the third quarter.
The rest of the third quarter was quiet, until Handley hooked up with a 75 yard TD pass to Marcus Tactikos with 1:47 remaining, to tie the score at 17.
The Hawks jumped back on the scoreboard on the next drive, after passes of 22 yards to Brandon Wells, and 18 yards to Jay Roy, Dylan Hamman found Wells for a 5 yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks up 24-17 with 11:56 remaining in the 4th quarter.
Skyline put the game out of reach on their next drive with a 69 yard scoring strike from Hamman to Roy, and the Hawks were up 31-17 with 9:41 remaining in the game.
