Sleepy Thompson Day 2

Norfolk Collegiate 59 Maret 48

After a tough opening round loss in the Sleepy Thompson tournament, Norfolk Collegiate returned on Friday to defeat Maret 59-48. Bash Townes led the Oaks with 23 points and 11 rebounds while both Adam Grant and Kyonze Chavis both added 13 points each.

Norfolk Collegiate started hot shooting 52% in the 1st half to take a 34-19 lead at the break. The Oaks cruised in the second half and led by as many as 17 points.

Townes finished 9 of 15 from the field Adam Grant added six rebounds and five assists while Chavis eight rebounds and four assists. Maret was led by Luke Garza who totaled 17 points and seven rebounds. Coby Davis also had 17 points while Trey Perry made 4 of 9 from downtown to finish with 12 points.

Bishop Ireton 52 Woodberry Forest 51 OT Sleepy Thompson

Bishop Ireton won their consolation game defeating Woodberry Forest 52-51 in overtime. Chandler Hill made a free throw with four seconds remaining and the Cardinals survived a missed three point attempt to secure the win.

Chauncey Lynch led the Cardinals with 18 points including two free throws to send the game to overtime. Lynch was 6 of 6 from the free throw line including

The teams battled throughout the game until five straight points from Stanford football commit Clark Yarborough gave Woodberry Forest a 45-40 lead with 2:42 to go in regulation. Lynch answered with a three from the corner and Michael Everette found Arminas Kleisys for a layup inside to tie the game.

Yarborough made a reverse layup with 10 seconds to go but he missed the free throw that could have given the Tigers the lead. Lynch two free throws forced overtime. Woodberry Forest tied the game at 51 with 17 seconds to go after a steal and layup from Max Johns. Hill retrieved a missed rebound and was fouled with four seconds left in overtime and made 1 of 2 free throws.

Joining Lynch in double figures was Nicholas Schmelzer with 12 points and Arminas Kleisys with 10 points and six rebounds. Joe Foley led Woodberry Forest with 14 points before fouling out. Yarborough added 13 points and five rebounds while Max Johns finished with 8 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Episcopal 83 STAB 73

The marquee game of the 60th Annual Sleepy Thompson tournament featured local school Episcopal in a matchup with St Anne's-Belfield featuring Duke commit Javin Montgomery-Delaurier. However, the star of the game was senior point guard Nick Reed who scored 34 points while leading the Maroon to an 83-73 win to move into the championship game.

Reed was unconscious at times finishing 12 of 17 from the field including 5 of 6 from behind the 3-point line. He also added seven rebounds, three steals.

St Anne's-Belfield led 16-11 late in the 1st quarter with Kareem Johnson scoring four quick points by attacking the basket. Reed buried a three and the score was tied after the 1st quarter.

Episcopal started to pull away in the 2nd quarter. The difference was Episcopal's perimeter shooting as they made 5 of 12 from downtown while St Anne's-Belfield was 0-6 from long range in the 1st half. Reed was deadly from 3-point range scoring eight points to help Episcopal take a 33-24 lead at halftime.

The margin ballooned to 12 after Reed when opened the 3rd quarter with a three to extend the lead to 38-26. Jayden Nixon finally ended the Saints 3-point woes with a three that started a 7-0 run for St Anne's-Belfield to cut the lead to 38-33 with five minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. Episcopal again pushed the lead to 12 before five straight points from Nixon trimmed the lead to 45-40. Nixon finished with 16 points and three treys.

The Saints continued to chip in to the lead and they were within two 63-61 before Montgomery-Delaurier picked up his 5th personal foul with four minutes to go. Montgomery-Delaurier finished with 22 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and two steals.

St Anne's-Belfield wasn't able to recover from his loss and were outscored 20-12 the rest of the way. Edwin Ebube added 16 points and 12 rebounds while George Mawanda-Kalema added 16 points and seven boards.

Atlantic Shores 69 St Stephens-St Agnes 66 overtime

In front of a hostile student base, the Atlantic Shores Seahawks advanced to the championship game of the 60th annual Sleepy Thompson tournament with an exciting, heart-pounding 69-66 overtime win over host school St Stephens-St Agnes. Atlantic Shores overcame an 7-point lead heading into the 4th quarter and survived despite scoring only 1 -point in the final minute of overtime.

St Stephens-St Agnes appeared to be in control most of the game behind hot-shooting guard Donoven Toatley who finished with 17 points. Two 3-pointers by Christian Depollar gave the Saints a 47-39 lead with 35 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter.

Atlantic Shores got back in the game by stepping up their defense. They put their best defender, Hunter Laadler, on Toatley which limited the damage from the sharpshooter. Mstadi Pitt picked up his offensive game making several key 3-pointers and he finished with 20 points including a stickback to pull the Seahawks within two 52-50. Forward Logan Wells seemed to be in the right place at the right time and his 3-pointer tied the game at 53.

Pitt and Denmark Slay traded points in the final two minutes and Toatley drained a pressured filled pull-up jumper with 25 seconds to go to send the game into overtime.

Chauncey Pittman scored the first points in overtime for St Stephens-St Agnes, but Pitt made a free throw and a 3-pointer to give Atlantic Shores a 64-61 lead with 2:21 remaining in overtime. Moments later, Ladler and Jordan Cannady both swished two free throws each to put Atlantic Shores ahead 68-63 with a little over a minute to go. St Stephens puled within two at 68-66 but they missed two shots in the final few seconds.

Pitt finished with 20 points on 8 of 17 shooting from the field and three treys. Jordan Cannady scored 8 points to go along with 8 rebounds and four assists. Wells had 13 points and seven rebounds. The Saints were led by Toatley with 17 points and Pittman had 17 points and eight rebounds. Denmark Slay had 15 points and four assists. Virginia football commit Andrew Trainer 8 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
