In 2011, the current senior Essex class had their 1st year as 9th graders. It was also Coach Fulks' 1st year at EHS. Essex went 4-7 that year and lost 55-6 to Amelia in the 1st round of the playoffs. I remember many on Va Preps spoke of the end of Essex football after two years of futility. Well, Essex went 39-6 the next three seasons (falling in the State title game in each of those three years). Not a bad way to bounce back, but it would have been nice, of course, to win one ha.
The Rappahannock Times this week is stocked with great information about the game (detailed write up of the game's rhythms and flows) and many pics as well. Front page color pic is of Malik Martin about to unload a "devastating block" on an Altavista player so Hammond could score in the 4th to hopefully tie it up (if 2 pt. conversion had been successful).
Altavista average start was at the Essex 48, Essex average start was at it's own 26. Field Position game and mistakes were huge (as would be expected with such balanced, strong opponents).
Sr. EHS QB Dominek Broaddus finished his career with 9,038 yards passing and 112 passing TDs. He has 2 or 3 state records (all classifications). Nice, humble kid too.
Essex's Sr. Sterling Hammond was East 1A D POY and Defensive Back POY and a 1st team WR. Sr. Markius Lucas was D Lineman of the Year. Sr. Robert Umphlette -O line and Jr. Malik Martin (secondary) also made 1st team. 2nd teamers were Broaddus (QB), Gaskins (RB) and Dameon Brooks (DE). Congrats.
