Just want to show some love to some former Essex Stars that are playing on the next Level.

1.) 2019 Grads: Syncere Gray & Rasheed Ellis. All-State OL & DL who are playing at Emory & Henry.

2.) 2014 Grad: DB Sterling Hammond who is in his Sr. year at Virginia Union University and who has had an award winning career while there. Word on the street is a few NFL teams are sizing him up for the upcoming draft.

3.) 2019 Grad: RB K.J. Dameron who committed to ODU and from what I understand, he will be joining them in January.

4.) 2019 Grad: DT Adarious Jones who transferred to Bishop Sullivan from Essex after his sophomore year at Essex. He is now at Texas A&M. He played the last 3min in their season opener and got playing time in the 3rd & 4th quarters against Clemson. He wears #55. There are 2 players with the #55 on the team. He’s the #55 on defense with dreads.

5.) 2017 Grad: Alex Peterson (Basketball). He’s playing at JUCO Missouri State University- West Plains. Going into his 2nd year I believe.

6.) 2017 Grad: Sardaar Calhoun (Basketball). Sardaar transferred to Blue Ridge School after his sophomore season at Essex. Went to JUCO Missouri State University -West Plains. He was offered by multiple D-1 programs this summer. Today he committed to Florida State University.

Congratulations and good luck to all of them. Great foundation to show those athletes coming up behind them at Essex that it can be done if you put in the work on the field/Court and in the classroom.

Man that's awesome to see. Northumberland has quite a few playing college athletics this year as well. Delvin Palmer got to show his wheels this weekend. I enjoy trying to keep up with all the nnd athletes who are playing college athletics. Seems the list grows longer each year.

Harold Mozingo, the former Essex baseball star, who had stints in the minors, who currently trains baseball players, said the other day that there's currently 13 former NND baseball players who are playing in the college ranks and one who is playing professionally. I had no idea it was that many, when he said that. That's a lot from one little area.

Bro...you just schooled me. I had no idea that there were guys playing baseball at the next level. PRO TOO?! That is a great thing for this area. I’m glad Harold is helping these guys out with his baseball training center. Much respect.

Yeah Harold is a great guy and really does a great job with giving back. He worked with just about all 13 of those kids at some point. I'm trying to get him to work more with softball stuff as well, as I'd love to have my daughter work with him.

Rappahannock has a handful of softball players playing college ball as well. It really is amazing for this area. There are some schools with more students than all of the nnd schools combined. With nearly 30+ college athletes that speaks volumes to the hard work these guys and girls are putting in on and off the field.

I heard about Palmer’s opening kickoff return. I love hearing about the local area kids moving on to the next level and doing well.

Awesome news EssexTrojan1! Thanks for posting.

Happy for all indeed but my man Sardaar Calhoun did it! Florida State University! Insane. ACC.

I remember meeting little Sardaar (he was actually little then) when he went to a tiny private school in Tappahanock as maybe a 4th or 5th grader. He later transferred to Essex to play sports as he got older.

I know that his wonderful Mama and sister are so proud! Me too!

Congrats to all.

Zack Kent of Northumberland High School and VMI just got drafted by the Texas Rangers this year.

I do believe that Harold Mozingo of Tappahannock helped train him as well.

I know his mom. She and I were in high school around the same time. She was 2 years ahead of me I think.

Essex could have used Sardaar in 2016 (I believe) when they were playing in the State Semi Final in Basketball. Was it Eastside High that they played? Anyway...Essex big man Alex Peterson got in foul trouble and later fouled out the game. After that, Essex had no answer for Eastside’s 2 big men. Sardaar was busy that weekend with his Blue Ridge team playing in and winning a private school state championship.

Virginia Union (a ranked D-II program) just upset Hampton University (a FCS D1 program) by 19 points this past weekend, 36-17.

VUU is led by Essex’s Sterling Hammond (an All-American who is up for some National Awards).

It was Union’s 1st win over a Division 1 team since 1991. It was Hampton’s 1st ever loss to a non-D1 school.

Hammond, a D star, also ran the ball well according to the paper. Word is at least 3-4 NFL teams are very interested.

One minor correction on Sardaar. I'm pretty certain he left EHS after his junior year and reclassified as a junior at Blue Ridge and played two years there. Yes, Essex might have won the state title if he had stayed.

Some one above said that's alot of talent for such a small area. All 6 schools in the NND and most in Tidewater are Class 1, some very small.

I recently discussed life in the Neck in a thread (at least how I experienced it) if you missed it and are interested.

Not sure if I mentioned this one.

In 2009 (wow, ten years ago) I toured a really nice, fancy and big (to me anyway) high school north of the NNK but in VA. 4 to 5 times the student populations in the Neck.

I was like, "Dang, y'all got nice a-- facilities up here" (private offices, meeting rooms and everything).

The AD told me "Yeah this stuff is nice, but I am going to be honest with you, most of the kids we got up here are soft, Mama's boys who cry to their parents at the drop of a hat."

"They ain't tough... like the kids y'all got in the Neck"

W&L sent seven recruited athletes to study and play at the next level last year (c/o 2019), and commemorated their success with signing ceremonies: JJ McNeil (Football)- UVA-Wise, Megan Smith (Soccer)- Bluefield, Chase Scott (Football)- Ferrum, A.C. Harding (Volleyball)-Ferrum, Malcolm Sadler (Football)-Catholic University, Trendon Craig (Baseball)-Louisburg College, and John Day (Basketball)-Richard Bland College of William & Mary.

Yes, it was George Wythe-Wytheville. Radford beat Lancaster in the other semifinal and Radford won it all with the little fella at point guard.
