South defeats North in 804 All-Star game

Cosby forward Zane Najdawi tip-in with 3.0 seconds remaining proved to be the game winner as the 804 South defeated the 804 North 130-128 at Richard Bland Community College. VCU recruit and L.C Bird standout Kenny Williams was selected game MVP after scoring 31 points including seven deep 3's while dishing out eight assists.

The South coasted to an big halftime leads thanks to the 3-point shooting of Williams, Devin Morgan and C.J. Miles who look to have their own 3-point contest combining for 11 makes from behind the arc.

After trailing for most of the game, the North took their 1st lead 88-86 on a layup by Highland Springs guard A.J Gaston. Back-to-back layups by Gaston pushed the North lead to 95-90 and a three from Stephon Davis gave the North a 120-114 lead with under three minutes to go.

Henrico forward Walter Williams made two huge baskets down the stretch and his steal and dunk appeared to give the North a great comeback win. However, he missed a three after another steal and Kenny Williams made him pay with a long three to pull the South to within one 128-127 with 14.5 seconds remaining. Matoaca guard Devon Morgan stole the ensuing inbound pass and found Williams streaking toward the basket. Williams missed the layup but Najdawi was there to followup the miss shot. The game ended with Kenny Williams stealing the inbound pass.

Williams finished 12 of 22 from the field including 7 of 13 from behind the arc. He had 21 points in the 1st half and he led a South 3-point barrage that resulted in 13 of 28 from 3-point land in the 1st half. A 28-foot 3-pointer by L.C Bird senior C.J Miles gave the South their largest lead 47-23 with a little over eight minutes to go in the 1st half.

The North started to find their range late in the 1st half led by Highland Springs guard A.J Gaston who finished with 18 1st half points including a three to help trim eight points off the lead. Kenny Williams 5th trey, with under a minute to go, helped the South squad take a 66-49 lead at halftime.

An extended halftime break was just the cure to get the North back in the game and they used a 26-9 run to tie the game. Back-to-back treys by Highland Springs guard Mike'l Simms tied the game at 80 with 13:47 to go. Trinity Episcopal guard Josh Brown scored the next eight points, including two treys to even the count at 101. The teams fought toe-to-toe until the final buzzer.

The South placed five players in double figures led by Williams 31 points. Brown was 9 of 11 from the field to finish with 21 points. Najdawi finished with 18 points, 8 rebounds and three blocks. Williams teammate C.J Miles added five treys to finish with 17 points and six assists while Devin Morgan drained four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points four rebounds and five assists. Daniel Saunders had nine points and eight rebounds.

A.J Gaston led the North with 30 points and Walter Williams had a great all-around game finishing with 25 points, 13 rebounds and three steals. Benedictine guard C.J Wiggins helped the North comeback scoring 15 of his 19 points in the second half. Ryan Pearson, who earlier won the 3-point shooting contest, was only 1 of 10 from 3-point range, but did finish with seven points, nine assist four rebounds and three steals.
