Speaking of Officials

I am just curious. It is my opinion that the officiating in 1A has declined to horrifically abysmal depths. Has anyone else noticed that or am I just being overly sensitive? And I'm not talking about them deciding games or complaining that my team would have won, etc, etc,. There is suppose to be a crackdown on helmet to helmet, yet they seem to call less this year than ever. There is suppose to be a crackdown on targeting away from the play, not seeing this. Almost every game, I see officials telling players where to line up to avoid a penalty. One warning in the 1st qtr I am okay with, not every play. What I see is them watching the play unfold instead of doing their job. We had a player get his helmet pulled off by the opposing lineman 3 times. We kindly asked the white hat to watch for this. The next 2 times it happened, he said he was watching the Qb play and didn't see it. The biggest problem I have is these guys have no oversight or suffer no consequences for their dreadful performance and seem to thrive on the fact that they can basically do as they please. I know they get graded, but that is not enough of a deterrent to get them to perform their jobs correctly in my opinion.

I just feel its so unfair to the kids and teams and schools who work their butts off every day to play and compete and then have to settle for refs who are only interested in collecting a check. Every crew I have seen this year has been pathetic

Yes. I've been watching hs football for 30 yrs in the nnd. And it's always the case. My brother is a vhsl official and he's been doing it 25-30 yrs. and I know because of his senior experience, he only does 5a and 6a games. But I also know that they are graded as well. So it is my thought that 1a gets "rookies", "old guys -well past their prime" , "out of shape guys", and random guys that have poor grades

It sucks for sure. 1A gets horrible officials without a doubt. However, there are a shortage of officials and these days I wouldn't want to be an official, coach, teacher etc. with the nonstop ridicule that they receive, so I wouldn't bet that it gets any better anytime soon.

Hey 2by4. Why don't you go into officiating and help the cause. Sounds like you would be great at it.

Thanks but I already have a job. And I don't have the luxury of getting paid if I do sh!tty work.

That's what's wrong with the world, Everyone wants to complain about something and then sit around on their a$$ and wait for someone else to fix it. Go be the best ref you can be.

Thats great advice from someone whom has credibility issues. So your solution is to sweep the issue under the rug and hope it just corrects itself? Problem solving 101, identify there is a problem, which is what I did with this post. Then you have intelligent discussions about how to fix it. I'm not sure your qualified to continue posting on the subject.

Sorry fellows it's not just 1A. Our school is 2A and our officiating is horrible as well. Especially watching chop blocks hurting our d-line and no calls when it happens for 3 quarters. As one guy responded his relative has done it for 25+ years. Almost all our officials have been of advanced age also. But even the younger ones are worse. I think it's a lack of training. But still they have ALL been horrible home or away.

You are qualified How? I didn't know we were talking about cleaning house. A lot of people complain and do NOTHING. Don't be one of those people. You want change, DO something and by that I don't mean COMPLAIN.

All kidding aside, is there a difference in the amount paid to officials depending on which level they officiate? If not I am not sure why it can't be regulated by the governing body. I know there has to be a certain amount of collusion between the VHSL and the officials or it would not have gotten to this point. Every year we have discussed something about bad officiating and nothing changes. As I understand it, both AD's give out a "report card" on the crew for their game. If both teams have issues then how can this not be addressed? They are not professional but there is a certain expectation for them.

Look, the big game two weeks ago with Galax and Giles had questionable calls for and against both teams. How can that not be a red flag to the officials? Does a game between less successful teams deserve lower graded officials? Those teams certainly expected very good officials since they are both getting set up for the playoffs. I am on the fence about it because all of the teams put in effort and deserve to have quality officials to maintain a sense of "fairness". The caviet being that both teams have to deal with the zebras that night. Unless there is a situation where someone is blatantly giving an advantage to one side or the other, what are the options?

I wouldn't want to do the job. I think there are some younger guys that are very good but there are not many of them out there. God bless the ones that do the job with integrity and try to mentor these younger guys. We need a ton more like that.

It's not just football it's all sports at every level. Our baseball team played in the state semifinals in Salem this past year. There were four umps on the field. They still didn't call a blatant interference call when the other teams third baseman clearly cutoff our runner rounding third on a tying run. So it's a clearly a training thing because one would think you would get your "best" to ump games of that importance.

I have done something. I started a discussion to see if anyone else thinks its a problem.

You started a complaint and yet you still sit there and do NOTHING. Have a nice day Sir.

Ever seen that show where that guy does the "crappiest" jobs? He could definitely do an episode on high school officiating I think.
