State Volleyball Championship Eve

Good luck to the Gladiators! I would consider Gate City as the favorite, but two unbeatens going at it for the state championship.... doesnt get much better than that

Sure thing, I always try to support our local teams and athletes. I was hoping to stream the live feed today, but internet connection isn't fast enough today to be able to watch the games without it constantly stopping to buffer.

Tough weekend for the Gladiators

They had a solid fall season in athletics, now onto winter sports.

Re: Tough weekend for the Gladiators

Indeed a tough weekend for the Red Pride. Our loss last night in football in the last seconds of the game was a tough one to swallow. Our volleyball team lost today to a very good Gate City, however both programs had very successful seasons. Football ends season at 11-1 and Volleyball finishes at 24-1. Good job Gladiators and Go Red Pride!

Re: Tough weekend for the Gladiators

Today I attended my first-ever state finals in volleyball, after having been to various playoff events at VCU in basketball over the years. So my first comments tonight have to be about the size of the crowds.

I got there for the end of the 1-A game between Auburn and Mathews, stayed of course for all of our (Riverheads) game against Gate City, and then stayed for a little bit of the Warhill/Cave Spring 3-A game. Therefore I saw six groups of fans.

I am not saying this because I am a Riverheads fan, but in all honesty, we were the only one of those six with a decent size fan base. In fact ours was about what we have had there for some of our basketball appearances.

But the others were soooooooooooo poorly represented. In some cases, they might not have had 50 people there. I realize that distance is a factor and of course Gate City had an excuse (hosting a football game at almost the same time), but the other fan sections shocked me. Can others who might have been there in the past tell me if this was normal attendance for volleyball finals?

OK, here is a brief synopsis of the RHS/GC game, asking that you be patient with me, since I am fairly new to volleyball and don't know a dig from a dink from a donut. The scores in the three sets were 25-21, 25-11, and 25-20 and each one had its own pattern.

The first set was close throughout, with numerous lead changes and neither team ever leading by more than four points. In fact GC's winning margin was their only four-point lead of the set, whereas RHS led more, had the four-point lead several times, and were the first ones to hit the 20-point mark.

The second set was pure domination by the Blue Devils. They jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and stretched it to as many as 15. At one point it looked like RHS would not even get to double digits but they managed.

After such a thrashing as that, you would have thought the Lady Gladiators would go quietly in the third set, but actually they came out fired up and led most of that one as well. They had as much as a 6 point lead at 8-2, and GC did not catch up until around the 17 point mark. RHS was still in it at 21-19 before GC put them away.

So even though a three-set match sounds like a runaway, the Big Red did have its moments today. I think the Luray coach, who had just played both teams, said it best in the paper today when she said that she thought Gate City would just have too much "firepower" for Riverheads.

That plus the experience of having been there so many times before gave them the edge. It will be interesting to see what their true fan base is like if things work out so that their football team makes a trip to Wilson in a couple of weeks. It was a shame they had to divide themselves today.

Re: Tough weekend for the Gladiators

You can ask most teams that play Gate City, especially in football, we have a very passionate fan base & travel extremely well. We usually run into the problem of having playoff games in football at the same time that volleyball is going on & usually most of the crowd is going to be at the football game. While the finals were being played in volleyball, the crowd at the GC vs Richlands football game, which was in Gate City, was packed. Approximately 5000 fans or more. GC usually tries to move the football game so there won't be a conflict, but it isn't always that easy. This case unfortunately they couldn't move it. If the distance between the two games weren't so great, you would've seen a lot more fans at the volleyball game. Most of the fans at the GC football game were watching the volleyball game on their ipad or phone keeping everyone updated. The fans who were at the football game, greeted the volleyball team when they arrived back in GC later that night.
