Re: Tough weekend for the Gladiators
Today I attended my first-ever state finals in volleyball, after having been to various playoff events at VCU in basketball over the years. So my first comments tonight have to be about the size of the crowds.
I got there for the end of the 1-A game between Auburn and Mathews, stayed of course for all of our (Riverheads) game against Gate City, and then stayed for a little bit of the Warhill/Cave Spring 3-A game. Therefore I saw six groups of fans.
I am not saying this because I am a Riverheads fan, but in all honesty, we were the only one of those six with a decent size fan base. In fact ours was about what we have had there for some of our basketball appearances.
But the others were soooooooooooo poorly represented. In some cases, they might not have had 50 people there. I realize that distance is a factor and of course Gate City had an excuse (hosting a football game at almost the same time), but the other fan sections shocked me. Can others who might have been there in the past tell me if this was normal attendance for volleyball finals?
OK, here is a brief synopsis of the RHS/GC game, asking that you be patient with me, since I am fairly new to volleyball and don't know a dig from a dink from a donut. The scores in the three sets were 25-21, 25-11, and 25-20 and each one had its own pattern.
The first set was close throughout, with numerous lead changes and neither team ever leading by more than four points. In fact GC's winning margin was their only four-point lead of the set, whereas RHS led more, had the four-point lead several times, and were the first ones to hit the 20-point mark.
The second set was pure domination by the Blue Devils. They jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and stretched it to as many as 15. At one point it looked like RHS would not even get to double digits but they managed.
After such a thrashing as that, you would have thought the Lady Gladiators would go quietly in the third set, but actually they came out fired up and led most of that one as well. They had as much as a 6 point lead at 8-2, and GC did not catch up until around the 17 point mark. RHS was still in it at 21-19 before GC put them away.
So even though a three-set match sounds like a runaway, the Big Red did have its moments today. I think the Luray coach, who had just played both teams, said it best in the paper today when she said that she thought Gate City would just have too much "firepower" for Riverheads.
That plus the experience of having been there so many times before gave them the edge. It will be interesting to see what their true fan base is like if things work out so that their football team makes a trip to Wilson in a couple of weeks. It was a shame they had to divide themselves today.
