And I mean that literally because if the Cougars completed a pass tonight, I don't remember it. Instead they unleashed a potent ground game featuring a player that will most likely re-write the record books before he leaves the Draft. I didn't have a program for reference but I was told he is only an eighth-grader. The name is Baylor Graber, which you have to admit is a pretty cool football name.

He not only rushed for 3 or 4 touchdowns, but he added some two-point PATS, he handled the kickoff chores, and he was in on what seemed to be just about every defensive play. If there had been a radio station there tonight, he would have probably found a way to run up to the press box between plays and handle the commentary on the game. So Cougar fans are no doubt licking their chops and if he really is as good as he looked tonight, the Draft will be a force to reckon with for quite some time. Definitely NOT good news for the rest of the district.....

I left with about a minute left, so I assume the final was 50-30. The Cougars had just taken possession for one final time, and I certainly assume they did not make any further attempt to score. But the game was not exactly a runaway as RHS had some moments of its own that kept things interesting.

The Gladiators in fact drew first blood, as they drove the length of the field, all on the ground, to score off the opening kick-off. The Cougars quickly tied the score on their first possession and then put the game away with a 30-point second period. To their credit, the Gladiators played hard the second half and did not go away quietly.

In fact the visitors had three different but equally exciting plays that kept them in the game. In the middle of that explosive second quarter with the Draft ahead 24-8, the Gladiators connected on a very nice 60 yard TD pass in which QB Ethan Mulcahy lofted the ball just inches over the head of the defender and Brody Phillips hauled it in and took it in for the score. That closed the gap to 24-14 at the time, but the Cougars scored twice more before half to safeguard their working margin.

The second big RHS play of the night came on the second half kickoff, when they surprised the Cougars with a nicely-executed onside kick, which they covered after it had gone about 11 yards. They took that in to score their third TD of the game and stay within reach at 38-22.

However, the not-to-be-denied Cougars scored again to double up the Big Red at 44-22, before Riverheads responded one final time with an impressive 65 yard kickoff return by Jonathan Talbott, leading to a touchdown that narrowed the deficit to 44-30 early in the final period. But the Gladiators were unable to draw any closer and the Cougars added an insurance TD by you-know-who to round out the scoring.

The loss was Riverheads' first of the season after opening with wins over Waynesboro and Parry McCluer. They now have three weeks off before resuming the season with five more district games. They will travel to Buffalo Gap on Wednesday, October 5th.

I believe I am correct that Stuarts Draft is undefeated on the season and if Mr. Graber continues to perform as he did tonight, they will be the team to beat this season in the Shenandoah JV circles.

Didn't the Gladiators have quite a long win streak going in JV as well? Or was that snapped in recent years?

They lost to Gap last year, the only loss under the previous head coach, the coach preceding him had only a hand full of losses over like a 10 year period. Im telling you the well has started drying up at RH, the varsity is going to struggle over the next several years. I have been watching the JVs for 25 years not sure I have ever seen a total butt whipping like they took last night, not sure if I have ever seen their defense get totally obliterated like they did, probably half of Drafts TDs the Backs were never touched. Draft is good but that is very uncharacteristic of RH football. Hope im wrong but I see it as another casualty of Castos retirement. I see dark days ahead for both the JVs and the Varsity.

I agree that you would have to go back a VERY long time to find a period when both the varsity and JV teams have lost their most recent games, but it would be premature to throw in the towel and give up on them. There is plenty of time left for both coaching staffs to make adjustments and make the most of their seasons. Plus you never know what is around the corner in terms of Little League players. So I guess I am the glass-half-full guy to your glass-half-empty. I will still take the current state of the RHS football program over the lean years of days gone by.

Im trying to be optimistic but unless my eyes are deceiving me were in for some rough times in the years ahead. All good things come to an end at some point so its to be expected.

As discussed in another thread, there is going to be an adjustment period for this staff regardless of what role they have played before. There is certainly talent on the varsity level and a solid group of Little league players coming in 4 or so years. But to be even more clear, this JV team had been pretty dominant in LL. The thing is that three big contributors from those teams are hurt and one isn’t with Riverheads anymore so what we are witnessing isn’t the whole picture. It’s just the current snapshot so while I pause for some concern, the ship will be righted at some point and we should go back to the mean of 6-7 win seasons for varsity and solid JV campaigns. The idea that consecutive championships or even undefeated JV seasons over and over is not statistically probable. Possible yes but unlikely.

Despite my expressions of optimism I too realize that the string of championships has to and most certainly will come to an end. But I guess I just don't necessarily see it happening this year, whereas it seems as if some of you guys do. Now next year, when we might face the likes of Graham, Appo, and who knows who else once we get into the playoffs, then of course we will not be expected to win multiple titles, if any at all. But let's make the most of THIS season before we tackle that one.

I hope you didnt take my question this morning to believe that Riverheads is done in any way, shape or form. It was a question and nothing more than that. In fact I didn't even make the connection between losing last week and then losing this game. I had recalled they had a long winning streak in JV but just could not remember when that streak had ended.. now that I think about it that was the game where Gap had sophomores playing wasn't it?

Anyway, Riverheads is still the king of 1A and that has not changed. Wake me up when they lose 3 in a row and maybe that will change depending on who they play.

I was not addressing any one person in particular with my comments because there seem to be more than one that appear to be losing faith in the Big Red, so I am just trying to keep the confidence level up.

Understood. I just wanted to make sure my reply was not taken the wrong way.

I'm sure you guys will be just fine lol.

@longtimerhsfan I am not jumping ship and there are lots of positives that have been pointed out on these boards even in light of the loss. My criticism is cautionary as much as anything but is just my opinion. I do agree with fencepatrol that the team has a different demeanor this season but every team does and kind of forms their own character as the season develops.

I suppose I am more mentioning possible versus probable. It’s possible that things are righted and the band plays on. It’s more probable that the juggernaut returns to the norm and things tighten up or even flip. Just my opinion and not my hope. I will be there when the lean years hit again whether it’s sooner or later as will a lot of the Red Pride faithful.

Every team RHS plays will do what ever it takes to win , they move their 10th graders down and play them till the clock runs out . Riverheads only plays 8th and 9th graders . BG did last year and Draft just did . Makes them feel good to run over our little guys ! We will see how they do against the big boys ?

Yeah, that’s not true - at least as it applies to Draft. Oh, and that was an eighth grader “running over your little guys”.

That young man will be special for sure. He was a monster last year in LL although he was stickered and caused most of his damage on defense.

I was at the game, #23 was very impressive, we had no answer for him or for #10 for that matter. Very well deserved win, dont recall seeing any sophomores from Draft, Riverheads pulled Phillips #23 down from varsity to play in the game but he is a Freshman. Very impressed with the Draft JV team.

For years Riverheads has handed other teams their a$$ on a platter . You would think these teams would look at what works and take notes , I guess Casto was just smarter than the rest, or the rest is toooooo stupid to do what works .

It's a lot more to it than that. Many teams have tried to copy it, but nor with the same success. It takes buy in from the kids, a strong culture, commitment to the weight room, coaching etc. Just showing up on Friday night won't get it done
