Stunning Win for George Marshall

George Marshall rallied for five runs in the top of the 7th inning to pull off a stunning 7-4 win over defending state champion Hickory. Mitch Blackstone drove in three runs with a homerun and 2-run double and Steven Johel threw 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win. The Statemen advance to the 5a State championship game where they will meet Stone Bridge who defeated Douglas Freeman 6-0.

The Statemen trailed 4-1 heading into the 6th inning with University of Virginia recruit Connor Eason having his way on the mound striking out the previous four batters. 5A North Player of the Year and Cornell commit Mitch Blackstone opened the inning by belting a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence to bring George Washington to within two runs.

Eason left after the 6th inning finishing with seven strikeouts while allowing two runs on three hits. . He gave way to Hawks sophomore Matthew McCreight who lasted only a couple of pitches before surrendering a leadoff single to Colin Kelly and a 2-run homer to the Statemen's 9-hole hitter Scott Carrell which tied the game at 4-4.

Hickory sophomore Hunter Gregory tried to plug the onsluaght but Blackstone blasted a 2-run double deep to the centerfield fence which scored two more runs. Shane Russell added an RBI single to give George Marshall a 7-4 lead.

Hickory senior Matt Montague went 2 for 2 from the plate.
