Hey guys,

Just here to drop a few notes about the Surry County/Charles City scrimmage on Aug. 12. Take it for what it's worth.

Surry County

Offense

Pros- Offensive pass blocking. Surry has plenty of size on the line and it was evident in the pass blocking. On many occasions the Cougars were able to provide enough time to launch the ball down the field and over the defense of Charles City. If Surry is able to get pass protection, they will be able to move the ball and return to the moniker of "Air Cougars."

Cons- Rushing attack. With the success of the passing game, Surry failed to move the ball on the ground in a threatening manner. The Cougars will be relying on the pass to set up the run, but strictly dominating the ground game from base sets didn't prove beneficial in the scrimmage. Two carries also resulted in fumbles by Surry, but fortunately they were able to recover it.

Defense
Pros- Converging to the ball. The Cougars wasted little time identifying and locating the ball-carrier for the Panthers. Their pursuit limited the Panthers and halted many attempts of moving the ball down the field by Charles City.

Cons- Finishing the tackle. While the Cougars are able to find the ball, finishing the play off was a different story. Charles City was able to muster additional yards on second efforts and keep the chains moving. Surry also gave up the biggest play of the day with an 80-yard run. Surry will have to make sure their opponents find the turf and keep them there in order to maintain success in the highly competitive Tri-Rivers District.

Charles City

Offense

Pros- Speed. As with most Panther teams in the past, Charles City fielded a lot of speed. Many of last year's skill players return, giving the Panthers an advantage at those positions. Charles City was able to gash big plays on the ground thanks to running backs hitting the open hole and reeling off many yards.

Cons- Offensive line. Coming into the year, the Panthers knew they had to rebuild and offensive line and it was evident in the performance today. Multiple snaps were either too high or too low and when the Panthers quarterback did get the ball, he was usually scrambling out the pocket. The Panthers have a chance to win the Tidewater District but have to sew up the offensive line in order to do so.

Defense
Pros- Backfield disruption. The smaller Panthers were able to do something that they haven't done in many years by getting into the backfield. Despite having a size disadvantage, many of the lineman and linebackers were able to stop Surry's running game before it got started. If Charles City continues to be successful in that aspect, a lot of teams will have to rely on winning one-on-one matchups through the air.

Cons- Secondary. While Surry's pass protection probably exceeded the average time of the quarterback in the pocket, Charles City was lucky to survive a number of deep throws made by Surry. On four separate occasions Cougar receivers were able to get past the Panthers secondary. While only one was completed by the Cougars, Charles City has to be able to hang for a long period of time if the penetration from the line can't find the quarterback.

That's it for my review for this week.

Next week's contests:

Aug. 19: Charles City vs. New Kent (6 p.m., site TBD)

Aug. 19: Isle of Wright Academy vs. Surry County (6 p.m.)

Great post game report! I sure hope this will continue throughout the season. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.
