Even though this news is from September, congrats to Buckingham native and former JRD Player of the Year and All state basketball and football player Taylor Boyers on assuming the head coaching duties for his Alma mater's basketball program. Taylor takes over the position as head coach Rus Gowin moved into the AD role, posters from back at the turn of the decade will remember Taylor as a gritty player who constantly was recording double doubles throughout his career, just a note Taylor was a leader in the school as a student athlete playing 3 sports making all state in 2 of the 3 and doing it all while being a Governor's School student. Taylor has also been assisting Coach Gowin since the 2013-2014 season, so great, natural fit for the school and community!

Didn't Boyers play FB at Hampden-Sydney? I remember him as a heck of a basketball player at Buckingham! He was a man among boys on the glass!

And on another note fan: Did Coach Pete Gowin pass away?

@pawfan Coach Boyers played a bit of football and basketball for the Eagles of Bridgewater College actually (I know H-SC and a lot of ODAC schools were after him for football) I always loved watching Taylor collect 20-20 games because he could bang in the paint with the big boys despite a height disadvantage (he just flat out worked his @$$ off). To answer your second question, yes unfourtanately long time AD and coach Pete Gowin passed away back in November 2015, his son Rus was the basketball coach at BCHS from 2009-2010 through last season, coached some great teams, including Taylor's senior season team that went to the state title game, and a very memorable 2012-2013 squad that I believe may have won the most games in school history or come close (memory is rough). Coach (Rus) Gowin was named the new Athletic Director at the beginning of the school year opening up the basketball position, I am sure Coach (Pete) Gowin would be very proud of his son and his first official hire as AD!
