Happy Thanksgiving everybody. Go to a game, enjoy it, and by all means, eat too much turkey.

Re: Thanksgiving & Essex (NND) stuff

Thanksgiving - my favorite holiday.

Faith, Family, Friends, Food, & Football

Not going up North this holiday (Thanks for that! ha) so will be at Essex/CB game on Friday. Hope for great Thanksgiving Day Crowd Friday night at 7 pm!

In Rappahannock Times out today - article about Essex facility ruled inadequate by the VHSL - appears that one or two schools complained enough - two words for you - however, always look for the bright side - IF Essex wins over CB, again IF -the coaches, players & volunteers can focus on the next upcoming big game instead of the facilities - plus, maybe play on a little turf....

Also, preview of CB at Essex game, article on last week's Rapp game, plus All Conference Teams.

Essex put 9 on- Sterling Hammond - Defensive POY - plus Books, Lucas, Gaskins (who may be out, also top RB), Martin. On offensive, QB Broaddus, Hammond, Gaskins, and Robert Umphlette (lineman & also kicker).

Rapp's Marcus Byrd was Offensive POY and Rapp's Anthony Darby was O lineman of the Year.

CB's Nick Graves was D Lineman of the Year and his coach Scott Foster was COY.

Congrats to all.

Re: Thanksgiving & Essex (NND) stuff

If Essex wins any word on where the game might be played?

Re: Thanksgiving & Essex (NND) stuff

The paper has Fort Chiswell fans listed as the ones that filed the complaints. As for the site for the game "IF" Essex wins...the paper said Middlesex, King William or King George are being considered. Even though King William is just 20 or 22 miles down the road, I would rather it to be at King George if Essex wins. That way the boys will get in a game on turf that will benefit them IF they make it back to the turf in Salem.

Re: Thanksgiving & Essex (NND) stuff

You can read? WOW!!!!!!! I'm really impressed.

Re: Thanksgiving & Essex (NND) stuff

Does it specifically list what the complaints/issues were?

Edit: I know that posters (it may have been you but I'm too lazy to go find out) have said it was about lack of visitors seating and lack of restrooms but I was wondering what the official VHSL ruling had.

I'm biased so I say play at KW. Lol. Kind of a neutral site for a lot of people and Essex always brings a big crowd when they play at KW. But I definitely see what you're saying about the turf field. I'm just being biased since I'm only 10 minutes away from KW. Lol

Re: (NND) stuff

I would guess Northumberland would since it's relatively new. Then Rapp might. If Essex doesn't W&L and Lancaster most likely wouldn't either. And CB also wouldn't and while where talking about CB where do you watch the game a CB? Looking at google earth there seems to be "a stand" at CB not stands.

Re: (NND) stuff

I drove by CB High on the way to Montross the other night. It truly is pretty much "a stand" lol.

The baseball stands at PM seat more than the stands at CB.

Re: (NND) stuff

Do any of the school facilities quality? Are you kidding? Are there no facilities up there with decent seating and rest rooms. Essex has seats on just one side of the field. No school in any division should be allowed to host a state playoff game if it cannot properly seat the fans, and provide decent facilities such as rest rooms. That's shocking and disturbing.

Re: (NND) stuff

This is alarming what you guys are saying. Do none of the schools up in that area have a decent facility?

Re: (NND) stuff

Depends on what you call decent...KW has very nice facilities by any standard, Northumberlands facilities are new and nice, but I'm not sure how many people it can seat. Essex just went through a multimillion dollar renovation but sadly none of the athletic facilities were upgraded, which is beyond sad.

NND Facilities

Northumberland would be the only one that may meet the VHSL requirements. It's the only school with permanent bleachers on the visitors side. All other schools use protable bleachers (the kind you might find at a baseball field) on the visitors side. Essex really lacks on restroom and concession stand facilities. And the lighting was installed in the mid-70s. Most folks in these parts prefer to stand at the games. Look in the home bleachers at some game and there is plenty of open seating but lots of fans along the fence line.

Re: (NND) stuff

I do feel sorry for the Trojans they have been good for quite awhile except the Jenkins year and the first plans for the additions had athletic improvements they probably got cut out. It is sad because people that come into our area judge the area by what they have just seen. I know Middlesex rented high rise bleachers years ago for their State final game . This is tough for the kids to know they have to travel for a game they should have had at their home .Enough about this its going to be a tough physical game Friday against the Drifters they have played lights out this year and really deserve all the ink they have gotten.Coach Foster has done a great job as has Coach Foulks lets hope it is a great game.

REALLY TROJAN?

You are already making excuses to why y'all will get beat. The only complaint we had, was about the family members you had officiating the game. Tell me why last years game has any barring on this year. Maybe your facilities are not up to snuff. I thought a Trojan was...... never mind.

Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

More than once it was noted on this message board last year that the officiating crew at last year's Essex-Fort Chiswell game came from the Shenandoah Valley. None of those guys saw either team play before that afternoon.

You are exactly right...

For some reason the ones who make the decisions cannot seem to grasp (even though they have been informed for many, many years) that the Essex sports facilities is mostly the outside IMAGE of our entire school and, as you said, even the Essex Community. It also reflects poorly on the entire area. Most visitors to our school go to the sporting events (mainly football). They go away thinking negative thoughts of our school and people. This is also true of local people (I have heard it all over the years). It makes the entire school suspect. For a few years now, Essex is not even allowed to host ANY track and field meets because the track is deemed dangerous and unsafe yet our kids have to practice on it. Essex has been State Champions in Track and Field (team and many individuals).

The businesses and powerful players in this community (and others) should come together to solve this embarrassing issue to our county. Even if some folks do not want realize it, I can assure you that it hurts our image and reflects poorly on all citizens, even those that do not have any direct connection to the schools. Local parents don't even want their children to use the bathrooms near the shanty town concession stand. I have been told that fine local people have offered to build new buildings (bathrooms etc.) and make improvements and have been refused.

Having said that, I'm sure that Coach Fulks and Co. is glad not to spend countless hours bringing in bleachers and bathrooms like they have for the last two years. Look forward to a great game!

^^^Excellent Observations^^^.....

For years I have said the public at large primarily goes to a school for athletic activities. They will observe the exterior of the school, the parking lot, the athletic facilities and the restrooms.Very few arrive to view the computer labs, science labs, libarary (is that a media center now?) Generally speaking if your parking lot is full of pot holes, your restrooms are horrid and your outdoor facilities appear unkempt then that's going to be the impression of the entire school.
Essex has one of the best school plants around now. If you didn't know, you would think it's a brand new school. Let's see how long it takes to get the athletic facilities up to date.

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

That's the only reason that Essex has a home field advantage. Family Officiating. Now we all know why they don't the game moved. Can't feed them refs their favorite home cooked meal.

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

I don't have a horse in this race but I don't know if I've ever seen a worse set of fans in my life than the ones from Fort Chiswell last year. To stand around a good 20 minutes after the game was over by wear the referees changed just to harass and berate them and they had to get an escort out was ridiculous. The game wasn't even close. It was 37-13. And FC actually scored first. So from that score on they were outscored 37-6. I can see being upset at the officials if a particular call cost you the game but when a team is beaten by 3 plus scores then it was because the better team won. When John Battle came to Essex two years ago they were some of the nicest and most respectful people I've ever met but unfortunately the FC fans were the complete opposite.

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

I know it hurts when people talk about your kin folks but hang in there. We actually scored twice, only one counted. According to one of the family members that was officiating the game. VHSL knows we got hosed, why do you think they are moving the game. They want it to be fair for both teams. Battle was scared to say anything, we weren't. Just keeping it real.

the VHSL assigns the officials

for state playoff games. Fort Chiswell's 5 minutes of fame is over. Move on

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

wow, you do indeed have some reading comprehension problems. 1) EssexTrojan1 never made any excuses. In fact, he was excited about maybe playing on Turf (IF Essex wins) Great experience there. Also, the Essex staff is happy not to spend the whole week moving bleachers and bathrooms, as has been mentioned a few times already. No concerns there 2) As NND Sports Fan just reminded you, the refs came from over two hours away (never seen them before)- get a map.

Also, you lost by like 25 points and Essex slowed down with a quarter to go.

And since you brought it up (I was going to let it go but to answer MrJ82 question about why the VHSL ruled - the main reason (they know Essex brings in seating and bathrooms) was Security and Crowd control. Because of the actions of maybe 50 to 100 FC fans! (not all, some I talked too were good, cool people.

In the paper from the VHSL "No barriers between fans and field make crowd control very suspect."

Let's see racist chants during the game aimed at the refs and Essex players (both black and white). Some FC fans came on the field after the game and hurled racist slurs at Essex kids. The Essex kids just walked away time and time again and played football. And the worst, the refs had to be hurriedly escorted out of the stadium in an ambulance. Maybe 40 people screamed at them and banged on the ambulance after the door was closed. You should have seen the fear on their faces. How do I know? Cause I was one of the few (like 3, 1 being the driver (a Firemen) Essex volunteers) that ran 'em through the crowd. What an adrenaline rush that was ha.

I would suggest that you not embarrass your school any longer.

I will say this. The year before the John Battle bought even more fans and were outstanding, wonderful people. I even stood with many of them on one end in the 2nd half and they were all so polite. They were just sad that they lost but were just proud of their kids.

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

No John Battle didn't say anything because they accepted defeat graciously. True class acts. I first hand heard slurs being used at the Essex players as they were leaving the field. I don't usually get into arguments on here but judging by how you act on here you were one of the 75-100 people who were yelling slurs at the players and abusing the refs. I don't care if that game was played in Essex, FC, or anywhere else last year Essex would have won every single time.

Re: the VHSL assigns the officials

And yours will be over soon enough. The only way you win is by some chance Altivista gets beat. If you do happen to make it, try and score this time.

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

Just ignore Fort89. He's been posting silly stuff like this since last year. Last year he did it with a Franklin poster. He seems to get off on insulting and name calling. I enjoy reading everyone's postings on here. Fort89's as well (when they are not name calling). I just ignore the disrespectful ones. No need in adding fuel to the fire when he starts his BS. I'm looking forward to a good Colonial Beach/Essex game tomorrow. Good luck to all and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

So you are saying you tried to run over a bunch of white people. I would never try and run over any race of people. I can assure you that I wasn't the 1 person yelling the "N" word. How about them good people in the end zone yelling at us and our kids. Were they your family members. The kids earned the right to play at home, put the work in and give them the chance. That way you can spend more time working and not on here talking. Enjoy Thanksgiving and I'm sincere when saying that.

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

You know 89, this post started with a Happy Thanksgiving, and look what you have done. I bet you will not have turkey today, probably a cheese whiz sandwich..

Re: Apparently you have reading comprehension issues Fort89

Something else you need to understand 89,. The VHSL does not know you got hosed, and likely, doesn't even care anyway,

Re: (NND) stuff

Let me chime in here. I am stating my opinion. Looking around at ALL the schools in the Northern Neck (except Northumberland), every school built dates back to the prehistoric days. Lancaster, Richmond Co., Essex and Washington & Lee have made renovations. SMH. Westmoreland County chose to build a new courthouse instead of a new school. Termite and plumbing issues are probably the very least. I am a strong believer that pride comes from environment that place student athletes in. As an individual that has traveled to various facilities in and around the state, and being from the Northern Neck, i'm going to say that as a whole the facilities are horrendous compared to others.
